CCRKBA Pans Proposed ‘Violence Tax’ On Guns, Ammo In Cook County

"The [CCRKBA] today criticized a proposed 'violence tax' on firearms and ammunition sold in Chicago and surrounding Cook County suburbs as a means of closing a multi-million-dollar budget gap."

"The tax proposal by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle would be designed to help close what the Chicago Sun-Times reports is a $115 million gaping hole in the 2013 budget. ..."

"'Law-abiding firearms owners in Cook County should not be shouldering the bills for criminals,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. 'Under Preckwinkle’s plan, honest citizens would be financially punished for the bad behavior of a criminal element that appears to be rampant and unchecked, considering the number of shootings and murders that have been tallied.'" ...

... "In short, the president wants to enact a measure opposed by the Fraternal Order of Police because it could compromise ongoing criminal investigations, he wants to end private sales, he wants to mandate nonexistent technology ('Only Ones' exempted, of course, even though the genesis of 'smart gun' research and development was to mitigate police 'takeaway' incidents), and he wants the federal government to withhold 19th Century firearm technology from 'We the People.'" ...

"We’ve been covering the coming manufacturing revolution in firearms pretty closely, with the latest installment being Dan’s post yesterday. Simply put, 3D printing has enabled the home user to manufacture items easily and cheaply using plans downloaded from the internet, and most people see the next logical step being the home production of firearms. And while that scares most of the anti-gun crowd, one law student from Little Rock, Arkansas is pushing the envelope and trying to design a 3D printable firearm that he will make available on the internet. For free. And I had a chance to talk with him Monday afternoon about what’s going on . . ." ...

There’s a social lesson from WDFW on dealing with predators

"Washington Fish & Wildlife Director Phil Anderson and his troops made the right call on dealing with wolves in The Wedge, and in the process, his agency just might have given society a hint on how to deal with predators of another kind.

Some Seattle Times readers, responding to a story in Sunday’s edition, are having fits over the removal of the Wedge wolf pack because the animals simply would not stop preying on cattle. They didn’t take the hint when a couple of animals were killed, and when a predator doesn’t take a hint, there is really only one way to deal with it. ...

"St. Louis Gun Rights Examiner has recently been taking a close look at the concept of entirely bypassing gun purchase laws (and any form of gun registration), by building one's own guns. This idea has been in the news lately, as University of Texas law student Cody Wilson's Defense Distributed group advances its 'Wiki Weapon' project, with the goal of designing a handgun that can be entirely produced by a 3-D printer, and then making the design available, free of charge, to anyone in the world with internet access." ...

The Top Five Second Amendment Enemies and Hypocrites

"Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan recently challenged a feisty reporter in Michigan on the Second Amendment."

"Ryan countered a loaded question from the reporter about 'gun problems' saying 'this nation has a crime problem.' Instead of proposing gun bans Ryan gave credence to enforcing current laws as well as focusing more energy on community groups, charities, education and youth programs. ... Anti-gun groups were clearly hopeful that gun control would be brought up at the last debate. With the first VP debate scheduled for this Thursday as well as two Presidential debates left to go, the chances are likely it could come up. It would be foolish to assume every politico is as pro-Second Amendment as Congressman Ryan." ...

"When I happened across a picture of a Calico 9mm, my first thought was not flattering. I mistook it for a toy. It looks like a squirt gun. The big magazine that rides on top of the Calico looks like a tank for water. Even then, when I thought was a toy, I found it really strange.

But its not a toy. The Helical magazine on top of the gun holds cartridges. Lots of them." ...

Gun Review: SIG SAUER 716 Patrol Rifle

"There’s a debate raging in the AR15 community. The point of contention: operating systems. Traditionalists favor direct impingement. Designed by Eugene Stoner, DI harnesses the power of the gasses trapped in the barrel to cycle the rifle’s action. It’s a remarkably simple system with one critical flaw: the gasses blow directly into the rifle’s upper receiver and bolt carrier. Over time, this leads to a dirty rifle. In a gas piston system the propellant gases push a solid rod that pushes the carrier to the rear. That makes for a cleaner running gun. While the controversy continues, SIG SAUER has covered its bets with their piston-driven 516 and, now, the 716 . . ." ...

"Think it’s alright to relax now? After all, didn’t a record number of people purchase firearms just before the 2008 presidential election anticipating a worst-case gun control scenario that never materialized? Whereas during his campaign Senator Barack Obama supported reintroducing the lapsed assault weapon ban, promised to eliminate an amendment requiring the FBI to destroy records of gun purchasers’ background checks and closing the so-called 'gun show loophole', he has not done any of these things. ... the Union address only weeks after the tragic Tucson shootings of Senator Gabrielle Giffords and others, made no mention of guns at all."

"RYAN: What I worry about as a hunter, as a person who believes in the Second Amendment, as a gun owner, is knowing that President Obama – in his earlier career, prior to his presidency – was an advocate for gun control."

"I worry about what his attitude will be once he never has to face voters again. And that to me is a concern just as a gun owner, that this is somebody who has a history of being hostile to the Second Amendment. He hasn’t, for political reasons I believe, done much to go after the Second Amendment, but his history, his party, lead me to be concerned about what he would be like in a second term." ...

Perhaps surprised by the debate snub, the Brady Campaign released the wrong statement on one of their social media accounts after the debate." ...

... "Such a tax alone wouldn’t close a $115 million budget gap in 2013, but it could at least funnel money into the county’s $3 billion operation — where roughly two-thirds of the budget pays for both the county’s public health clinics and two hospitals along with the criminal justice system that includes the courts and jail."

"'If we were to pursue a tax on something like guns and ammo, clearly that wouldn’t be popular with the [gun lobby] out there, and it may not generate $50 million, but ... it is consistent with our commitment to pursuing violence reduction in the city and in the county,' Kurt Summers, Preckwinkle’s chief of staff, said on Monday." ...

"With violent crime in Chicago (which still--even after McDonald v. FL: 99% Chance That This Florida Attorney General’s Brief Was Filed by Someone Not Licensed to Practice Law

"Odd, you say — wouldn’t it be pretty likely that whoever is signing the brief is likely licensed to do so? Well, I can prove it: Less than 1% of the Florida population is licensed to practice law. Thus, given the small percentage of the population that is licensed to practice law, the overwhelming majority of briefs are not licensed. Thus, my suspicion that the brief was signed by someone who isn’t licensed would be reasonable because, in any given case, there would be, statistically speaking, a 99% likelihood of unauthorized practice of law."

"Nonsense!, you say. Nonsense indeed — yet it is the argument that the Florida Attorney General made with regard to licenses to carry concealed firearms." ...
