When he was in high school, Charley Mahler witnessed a near tragedy from the back seat of a car full of kids. He still can see the events unfold in his mind, and it's the thought that a friend could have died because of the careless handling of a gun that led him to say yes when asked more than 40 years ago if he'd teach hunter education classes to area youth. |

Politics in the exam room? A new study suggests patient care may vary depending on whether the doctor is a Democrat or a Republican — at least when it comes to some hot-button health issues like firearm safety. Health care has long drawn partisan political fights, like state laws surrounding abortion, or Florida’s law restricting doctors from discussing guns with patients. But there’s been little research on the doctor-patient side of those controversies. Can physicians leave their own political ideology at the door during something as simple as a checkup? |

Twelve of Maine’s 16 county sheriffs have essentially told anti-gunners backing a so-called “universal background check” measure on that state’s November ballot to pound sand, explaining that Question 3 “will do nothing to stop evil people from getting their hands on guns.”
Question 3 is backed by anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety and its clones. |

At this Sunday’s town-hall style presidential debate the public is able to vote for their favorite questions. The ABC News and CNN moderators plan on using the 30 questions that receive the most votes. Largely because of efforts by gun control organizations, the current top two questions are both on gun control. The first is, “Would you support requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales?” and the second is, "How will you ensure the 2nd amendment is protected?” |

Hillary Clinton vowed Sunday evening that she would nominate Supreme Court justices who agree with her on the need for stricter gun laws. "I respect the Second Amendment, but I believe that there should be comprehensive background checks," the Democratic nominee said Sunday, "and we should close the gun show loophole and close the online loophole we have to save as many lives as we possibly can." |

We aren’t enthused about what appears to be an accelerating ride off into the sunset. The pony in question is “technology,” and the rider, the not-so-venerable “.40 S&W.” Light bullets or heavy, .40 S&W is suited to many tasks. We hope our gloom is premature, tinged with guilt as it is. As early adopters of the 10 mm, we concede the appearance of the .40 “Short and Weak” (as it was often derided in the early ‘90s) evoked no enthusiasm. We were not, shall we say, subdued in offering that opinion, either. |

The University of Kansas’ chancellor knows firing a gun on campus areas with pressurized gas cylinders, rocket fuel and other combustibles might be disastrous. But she says the school can’t ban guns in such places. State-run universities in Kansas must begin allowing concealed weapons onto campuses next July. When Alfred Olango pulled out an object from his right pocket last month and assumed a shooting stance in a strip mall parking lot in a San Diego suburb, one officer opened fire with his pistol. The other officer simultaneously stunned Olango using his Taser. Civil rights advocates say the different response by officers facing the same suspect illustrates a breakdown in police training and communication and shows that some officers are too quick to turn to deadly force.

In recent years, on the first day of hunting season, many students stayed home from school that day, to go hunting. [Today’s school teachers do not overlook such truancy from classes!] Every hunter remembers his or her first gun. The hunting of deer, rabbits, squirrels, doves, ducks, turkeys, and raccoons has been a part of Mercer County’s heritage. |

In expressing his opposition to an “assault weapons” ban, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stresses that Americans should be able to own the “firearm of their choice.” Under a Trump administration, that means individual Americans should have the freedom to own the gun they are most comfortable with using for self-defense, whether a revolver, a semi-automatic handgun, a shotgun, or an AR-15 or AK-47. |

Both sides in a battle over a ballot measure to tighten gun background checks in Nevada say too many criminals have weapons. They disagree as they attempt to sway voters ahead of the Nov. 8 vote on whether a proposed state law would do anything to keep guns out of the hands of those who already are barred from having them. |
