Greg Gianforte has accused Gov. Steve Bullock of overstating or outright lying about his record on gun rights, suggesting he would align with Hillary Clinton “to take our guns away.” “There’s only one candidate endorsed by the NRA,” Gianforte has said in variations during interviews and debates. “That’s me.” Three major gun rights groups have endorsed the Republican: the NRA, Gun Owners of America and the Montana Shooting Sports Association. Bullock, a Democrat, nonetheless argues he is, in fact, a defender of the right to bear arms “without abandoning common sense,” often referencing concerns raised by law enforcement officials about certain measures. |

If an intruder breaks into your home and you feel like your life is in danger, lawfully the Castle Doctrine allows you to use deadly force and defend yourself and your family. In the state of Idaho; however, that does not apply. Many people KPVI spoke with were surprised that Idaho doesn’t have this law already. But advocates who are pushing for the bill hope to introduce it this coming legislative session. Castle Doctrine, originated in 2012 to give homeowners more protection for self-defense inside their homes. Edward Folmar, a Pocatello resident says, "In my opinion a person has the right to defend themselves and their property, but their family as well. And that includes my three cats." |

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump wasn’t the only one upset by the questioning at Sunday night’s presidential debate. Gun control advocates are also frustrated that the moderators — CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC News’s Martha Raddatz — did not ask Trump of Hillary Clinton about gun violence. Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, accused the moderators of “turning a blind eye” to the issue. |

Fifty people, including the gunman, died in Orlando’s Pulse nightclub on June 12, 2016, and Florida gun control advocates hoped lawmakers would be compelled to propose stricter gun laws. They urged a special legislative session. But Gov. Rick Scott rejected the idea. At a news conference three weeks after the shooting he said that “the Second Amendment has been around for over 200 years. The Second Amendment didn’t kill anybody. Evil does.” |

If planning on attending a gun show in the near future, you might want to consider avoiding any national borders, specifically any Mexican-American borders. According to emails reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, “Agents with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency crafted a plan in 2010 to use license-plate readers — devices that record the plate numbers of all passing cars — at gun shows in Southern California, including one in Del Mar, not far from the Mexican border.” |

Sunrise marked the start of New Jersey's expanded black bear hunt. Monday is the first of the six-day hunting season. The first three days are reserved for bow hunting, while hunting with bows and muzzle-loading guns will be allowed during the last three days. New Jersey resumed state-regulated bear hunting in 2003 after a ban that lasted more than 30 years. Another hunt was held in 2005, and in 2010 the state instituted an annual hunt. |

When Alfred Olango pulled out an object from his right pocket last month and assumed a shooting stance in a strip mall parking lot in a San Diego suburb, one officer opened fire with his pistol. The other officer simultaneously stunned Olango using his Taser. Civil rights advocates say the different response by officers facing the same suspect illustrates a breakdown in police training and communication and shows that some officers are too quick to turn to deadly force. |

According to 19-year-old MIT undergraduate student Kai Kloepfer, America has a “gun violence” problem. To help find a solution for the problem, Kloepfer decided to create a smart gun that utilizes military-grade fingerprint software so only the gun’s owner can use the weapon. The idea is to keep children and criminals from being able to shoot guns and the technology found on these smart guns is similar to what is used by Apple to lock iPhones. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily - given the political realities - very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal. — Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, pg. 53 |
