John Thomas set up the deal the way he had arranged nearly two dozen others. A friend said he wanted to buy as many guns as he could, so Thomas got in touch with someone he knew who had guns to sell. The three of them met in the parking lot of an LA Fitness in south suburban Lansing at noon on Aug. 6, 2014. Larry McIntosh, whom Thomas had met in his South Shore neighborhood, took two semi-automatic rifles and a shotgun from his car and put them in the buyer’s car. He handed over a plastic shopping bag with four handguns. |

After competing in six Olympic games, Emil Milev has a new challenge ahead of him: being head coach of the Ohio State pistol team as it prepares for another triumphant season.
The pistol team won last year’s women’s aggregate national championships and the open team intercollegiate championship for the third season in a row. Milev said he is looking forward to building on the success of an already highly decorated program and “taking it to the next level.”
“The name is what led me here — it’s the best in the country,” Milev said. “I think the team and I can work together, and this collaboration can be beneficial to the program. I want to give them a lot of opportunities in the sport and in life.” |

A prominent gun-control group filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the maker of “bump stocks,” the devices believed to have been used by a mass shooter in Las Vegas to inflict maximum carnage when he opened fire on a country music festival last week. The devices, which are legal, essentially allow semiautomatic weapons to rapid-fire bullets, much like an automatic rifle or machine gun would. A dozen rifles fitted with bump stocks were found in the hotel suite of Stephen Paddock, who killed 58 people in 11 minutes from his perch on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel on Oct. 1. |

House Bill (HB) 4107 was introduced to the Illinois General Assembly by Representative Martin J. Moylan (D-Des Plaines) on Oct. 5, 2017, in the wake of the tragic Vegas shooting to effectively ban the sale of assault rifles in Illinois. The bill would amend the Illinois Criminal Code of 2012 and would make it unlawful to "deliver, sell, or purchase or cause to be delivered, sold, or purchased or cause to be possessed by another, an assault weapon, assault weapon attachment, .50 caliber rifle, or .50 caliber cartridge," according to a synopsis on the Illinois General Assembly website, www.ilga.gov.

Even at a young age, I was trying to decide what the best caliber for a hunting rifle should be, though my first real hunting trip was several years in the future. I had trouble understanding why the supposed experts couldn't agree on one caliber that was best for everything until I grew up and learned there was no such caliber.

Illegal guns get into Chicago through lone dealers, not large trafficking organizations, and that makes any legislative action taken to stop the flow totally impractical, according to Chicago police. Police researchers say that most illegal guns come from nearby states like Indiana and Iowa after being stolen or resold by their original owners, according to a Tuesday report from the Chicago Sun Times. |

Mark Kelly didn’t know what a “bump stock” was before the Las Vegas mass shooting—but he says the signs that Congress is moving quickly to ban the semiautomatic rifle modification prove what he and other gun control advocates have argued for years: Pass the right kind of laws, and lives will be saved. Even the National Rifle Association agrees on this one—though instead of backing new legislation, the group pushed for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms last week to use existing laws to crack down on bump stocks. |

The recent attacks from the left regarding the Second Amendment in the midst of a horrible massacre that just took place in Las Vegas is pathetic, and shows a complete disrespect for the victims and reveals that they are willing to utilize such a horrific attack for their own selfish political gain. Let's face it, many Democrats want to take away your Second Amendment rights but they are too afraid to say it. However, Americans will never let that happen! They know that their anti-gun rhetoric will never take away our Second Amendment but they just say it to appease their leftist supporters. |

Attorneys and gun owners who want the Supreme Court to overturn Maryland’s ban on assault rifles make an argument that goes something like this: If a gun is popular, the government has no business keeping you from owning one — or 10, or 20. Such rifles might have been used in the nation’s horrific mass killings, including the one at a concert in Las Vegas 10 days ago, but they’ve become so “common” that they ought to be protected under the Constitution. |

A pair of House lawmakers on Tuesday were preparing to introduce a bipartisan bill to outlaw "bump stocks," the rapid-fire gun modifications purchased by the Las Vegas shooter. The two high-profile young congressmen are Rep. Carlos Curbleo, 37, a Republican who hails from a heavily Democratic South Florida district and is facing a tough re-election race in next year's midterm elections; and Rep. Seth Moulton, 38, a Democrat and a former Marine from Massachusetts. |

IN DECIDING not to appeal a ruling that threw out part of D.C.’s restrictive law on permits for people carrying concealed guns in public, city officials acted pragmatically. Even though they said they were right about the law being constitutionally sound and beneficial to the public, they weren’t willing to put up a fight. Such abandonment of principle normally would give us pause, but in this case D.C. officials were wise to recognize the risks, not only to D.C. but also to other parts of the country if they were unsuccessful. |

These are the things you can count on like clockwork after each of the mass murders that have become a grimly familiar American trope: The National Rifle Association’s Twitter account goes silent. The Onion’s painfully on-point satire, “‘No Way to Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens,” makes the rounds again. And there’s a chorus of outrage against “politicizing the tragedy.” Let’s set aside for a moment the question of exactly how soon after a mass shooting it is okay to talk about the “shooting” part. Here’s when we definitely should be talking about gun violence: all of the rest of the time. |

Following the heinous criminal attack on Las Vegas concertgoers, pundit Bill Moyers has continued to demagogue guns, the National Rifle Association and the Republican Party. Moreover, he has tried to convince readers that there is strong support for gun control (even though American voters elected pro-gun Donald Trump over pro-gun control Hillary Clinton less than a year ago). |

What Phil Gallman brings to the gun control discussion is an objective, investigative examination of the facts without the polemics or bias found in much of the literature. Gallman has been an assistant professor of electrical engineering and a contractor in the defense and intelligence communities. (I read his book about marine radar, Radar Reflectors for Cruising Sailboats, that helped me understand the facts about making a boat more visible on the high seas.) |

Boston is launching an unprecedented New England partnership to track down the guns that cross state lines and land in the hands of trigger-squeezing criminals in Hub neighborhoods. Through a pilot program between the city, Burlington, Vt., Worcester and Hartford, Conn., a database is in the works that would provide current information detailing whether a gun confiscated by police had been used in previous crimes in one of the cities, Boston officials told the Herald. |
