The Pierce County prosecutor said no charges will be filed against three men in the shooting of another man who was killed inside a Lakebay home.
Rhett Whitchurch, 44, of White Center, was shot and killed just inside the front door after he and others attempted an armed, home invasion-style robbery of a home, prosecutor Mark Lindquist said.
Police said Whitchurch and team of men, including 27-year-old Justin Hill, were armed with guns and other weapons when they attacked the home around 8:30 p.m. with 22-year-old Julia Jones acting as their driver Thursday.
The three men who lived at the home were also armed and returned gunfire, killing Whitchurch, police said. |

Don't tell the FBI that. They're proud to report that, in the first six months of 2009, violent crime in America dropped by 10%, but consider last year, too, the United States ranked 4th, out of 46 countries, behind Thailand, Colombia, and South Africa in deaths from firearms with just over 9300 fatalities, more than twice as many as American lives lost in the war in Iraq.
In this era of mass gun violence exemplified by the shooting of more than 40 at Virginia Tech, and Columbine before it, guns are to blame for mass casualties in Chicago, Salt Lake City, and Texas. Just last week, in Gainesville, Florida, there was a shooting spree. |

Voters in this conservative district know Edwards was a vocal supporter of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that the Second Amendment's guarantee of an individual right to bear arms applies to state and local gun control laws.
"I believe that the Second Amendment protects the individual rights of all Americans to own and bear arms, and [the] ruling ensures that right extends to all lawful gun owners regardless of where they live," Edwards said. |

Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb was awarded by Shooters Committee On Political Education (SCOPE) during a recent annual banquet sponsored by the organization. Kolb, a Republican, received the Sandra Lee Wirth Legislator of the Year Award for standing up for the rights of gun owners, according to a release.
SCOPE, a nonprofit, statewide volunteer-run organization, is an affiliate of the National Rifle Association. “Some fights are worth fighting — the preservation of the Second Amendment is definitely worth fighting for,” Kolb stated. |

Few business organizations deny that their members tilt towards Republicans, who promise lower taxes, less regulation, and reduced federal spending. These groups suggest that Obama is just trying to divert attention away from his own economic policies. The gravitation of Obama towards accusing or threatening political opponents is ominous. Secretary Napolitano, infamously, suggested that domestic terrorism threats were posed by Americans who agitated in favor of lower taxes or the Second Amendment. |

The Supreme Court can be something of a Rorschach ink blot: What you see when you look at it may reveal more about you than about any objective reality. To fervent liberals, including some in the press, it may seem evident that any court that includes the likes of John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito — conservatives all — must be a right-wing stronghold.
But that's a caricature. The Roberts Court has not been relentlessly conservative, let alone the "most conservative court" in three-quarters of a century. How could it be? Its four conservative justices are balanced by four liberals ... with Anthony Kennedy in the middle, voting sometimes with one bloc, sometimes with the other. |

For 137 years, the Privileges and Immunities Clause has lain dormant, when the 14th has been invoked it has been via the Due Process Clause.
That’s what happened in June when the Supremes ruled 5-4 that Chicago, in the case of McDonald v. Chicago, could not prohibit possession of guns in the city. Four of the majority cited the Due Process Clause, but Justice Clarence Thomas agreed with the outcome but wrote a concurrence citing instead the Privileges and Immunities Clause.
Thomas lambasted the plurality for its weak stance. |

While America continues to crumble financially, our own representative, Dan Boren, chooses to make costly, inane recommendations. His latest idiocy is HR5667, the Firearms Microstamping Evaluation and Study Act. This proposed study is one more step towards gun control that Mr. Boren is tiptoeing around the edge of. While he beats his chest and touts his endorsement by the NRA, this is the kind of legislation he is proposing to spend our hard-earned taxpayer dollars on. Endorsements can be revoked, Mr. Boren, and I for one, smell a rat.

As James pointed out — rightfully, I believe: “If more people started to open carry, I suspect people would get used to it. I also think people with anger or aggression issues may keep it to themselves in the presence of a person that carries openly.”
With all that said, it is not so much that I desire to carry a weapon as an exercise of my Second Amendment rights; it is because I do not want to end up in the hospital or a morgue because I did not have the capability to defend myself from grave harm at a critical point in time. |

Officer Richard Chrisman was arrested shortly after the shooting last Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has since been released on bond.
The arrest was made after the other officer on the scene told investigators that Rodriguez did not have a weapon and did not pose a threat.
"I think it is almost certain that they will increase the charges to manslaughter or murder," Manning said. "If they don't, the Phoenix Police Department and others will have a cloud over their heads." |

"The first thing I thought is, I would've shot 'em."
That's one of my good friends, talking to me the other day about the news that a pair of preteen gangsters last week walked up on a woman in the Detroit suburb of Harper Woods, flashed a handgun and carjacked her.
“It's sad, that's the worst part. It's just a little boy walked up to me in the neighborhood where I grew up in and tells me to give up my car to him. And I'm like, ‘Are you kidding?' and he opened up his shirt and showed me the gun,” Johnston said.
The boy said he was going to kill her if she didn't give her the keys, Johnston said.

"When the officers arrived, they observed the victim (Leverett) lying in the street at the corner," he said. "Then, they observed Johnny Garrett lying in a ditch, face down, also at the corner."
Investigators say they believe Johnny Howard Garrett, 46, repeatedly stabbed Leverett with a long-bladed knife, which a group of people wrestled away and turned against him. Garrett also was beaten with a metal object.
Police have not identified who was in the group and no charges have been filed, but the case is going to a Leflore County grand jury as a matter of protocol. Purnell said he believes the group's actions were akin to "self-defense." |

Congressman Ike Skelton has an new television ad up, featuring his endorsement by the NRA.
“[W]hen vicky hartzler had a chance to defend the Second Amendment, she took a stand against the NRA, opposing conceal carry. Vicky Hartzler thought government should decide – not gun owners,” says the narrator. “Ike Skelton knows what the Second Amendment means to rural Missouri.”
“This is an issue where Vicky Hartzler and I simply disagree. I support Missouri’s conceal and carry law, while Rep. Hartzler sided with a small minority of her colleagues in opposing it,” Skelton said in a statement in early September. |

Earlier this week, I wrote that NRA would be foolish obey the wishes of Republican activists who want the NRA to endorse only Republicans, and especially to not endorse endangered House Democrats. Here are some data on NRA endorsements, and some of the actions that dozens of House Democrats have taken to merit their endorsements:
NRA Senate endorsements in 2010: 23 Republicans, 2 Democrats. NRA House endorsements in 2010: 197 Republicans and 61 Democrats.
...
As the numbers above illustrate, Democrats constitute an indispensible part of the pro-Second Amendment majority of the current Congress. |

Despite the rumors, the National Rifle Association didn't end up endorsing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (they decided to stay out of the Nevada Senate race). But 58 congressional Democrats did get the gun-rights group's nod for November. As the Washington Post reported last week, this includes some incumbents in key districts Republicans need to win to retake Congress. This includes Reps. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) and Tom Perriello (D-Va.), despite their pro-gun GOP challengers. |

Police responded to a report of gunshots. When they arrived on the scene, Ricky Clyde Blattau said he shot Reginald Eugene Miller in self-defense, according to a press release from Cherryville Police.
Miller, 44, had a gunshot wound to his upper arm. He was treated at Cleveland Regional Hospital and released.
Blattau told police that he went to the mobile home park with his girlfriend who lives next door to Miller. The couple drove up and Miller instantly grabbed a pipe and approached them, the press release states.
Miller swung the pipe at the couple, and Blattau pulled out a .22-caliber handgun and shot the man. |

The Senate next week plans to consider a House-passed bill that expands the state's self-defense law, a top GOP senator said.
With bipartisan support, the House on Tuesday voted 159-38 to approve the bill that allows lethal force in self-defense outside the home without retreat.
Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, R-Jefferson County, said there's "support in our caucus to take a look at working it into a tight schedule." The Senate's last three days in session are Tuesday, Oct. 13 and 14. |

The Huffington Post reports:
Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul appeared at a three-day Kentucky machine gun shoot and show over the weekend to rally support among the state’s gun owners.
“I don’t have to apologize for supporting the second amendment. I support it and will continue to support it no matter what the liberals say,” the Tea Party-backed Republican told a crowd of Second Amendment devotees, according to a report from The Daily Caller.
“The president says that you’re out here in the middle of the country clinging to your guns and ammunition. What I tell the President is, ‘We’re clinging to our guns, our religions and our ammunition,’ Paul continued. |

They do this with full knowledge that these regulations will be challenged in court and likely to be overturned. They do not care. Their objective is to subvert and delay the effect of the court rulings.
If you are a hunter, target shooter, collector or want a firearm for protective reasons, it is incumbent on you to determine how the various political candidates stand on firearms' ownership.
Do not be satisfied with statements like "I support the Second Amendment" or "I support hunting." Make sure they support the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear firearms for any lawful reason with minimal interference from governmental entities. Once you know for whom to vote, make sure you do vote. |

LYNWOOD, Ill. – The arrest of a small-town police officer for the seemingly random shootings of three people surprised his family and neighbors Friday even as it brought relief to residents on the Illinois-Indiana border where the shootings took place.
Brian Dorian, 37, was arrested early Friday after a two-day manhunt for a disheveled gunman who had approached his victims and asked about honey bees or construction material before pulling a gun. One man was killed and two others wounded.
