The soft point bullet is primarily used for hunting, with the deformation of the nose creating slower expansion and greater penetration than a hollow point of the same caliber. Naturally, there are times where this is very desirable – such as hunting big game in areas where hollow points are banned.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging experienced hunters to share their skills and knowledge with novice hunters by becoming hunting mentors this fall. Mentored hunting is a one-on-one learning experience that can be a great way to help new hunters navigate hunting scenarios with the guidance of somebody with experience. |

The M1 Garand became an American legend as the go-to rifle for G.I.s in World War II, but many Garand fans might be surprised by the performance of the simpler, cheaper, higher-capacity, British bolt-action Enfield No. 4 Mk 1 that fought beside it. To be honest, calling this a versus piece is both entertaining but also somewhat misleading. These two classic military rifles served important roles in World War II for the allies, but they have very different origin stories. Heck, they don’t even share similar operating systems or calibers. |

A testament to the hardiness of the lever-action design is the expansion of several gun makers’ catalogs, including Henry Repeating Arms, Mossberg, Rossi USA and Taylor's & Co. to include models with 21st century features and furniture over the last few years. These “tacti-cool” lever guns have sold well and are certainly popular with the straight-walled cartridge hunting crowd. But do these updated repeaters have a place in a home defense plan?

One of the nation’s “defund the police” and surging violent crime epicenters could see big changes on Election Day. Oregonians will soon cast their ballots and they are showing signs they may reject a severe gun control ballot initiative, as well as elect the first pro-Second Amendment governor in more than forty years. |

“It’s very likely that additional guns have been recovered. If they’re recovered by the ATF, that wouldn’t make it into the court system just yet,” said John Ham with AFT. Three of the 59 guns stolen from Frontier Justice this summer were retrieved in three separate incidents in just the last few days. |

As first mentioned in Part 1 of this two-part series, I was fortunate to be in attendance at Lucid Optics’ annual gun writer’s event at NRA Whittington Center again this year. The event secured a September weekend slot at the facility, a perfect time to visit with cooler temps but before the deer and elk seasons that close access to Whittington’s rugged extreme long range area. This article features Shaw Barrels, a brand represented at the conference, and also insights regarding long range shooting as shared by some of the best in the business.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.... We've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of government himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. — Ronald Reagan |
