As politicians thrash around for "doing something” about deranged, dejected homicidal narcissists, many have settled on the Australian model of gun control. But few Americans understand what that really means. In 1996 one of the most horrific mass murders perpetrated by a single deranged individual occurred at Port Arthur in Tasmania. Within weeks, then Prime Minister John Howard railroaded through a Draconian gun-control bill. |

I am a mother, a wife, a nurse and a gun owner. I made the decision to obtain a handgun and concealed-carry permit after a frightening experience with two drug-seeking individuals. These desperate folks made bad choices and incorrect assumptions and, although it turned out OK, the potential for a horrible outcome haunts me. |

He can now return to Zimbabwe as a "tourist" because he had not broken any of the country's hunting laws, Environment, Water and Climate Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri said, the Associated Press reported. Zimbabwe's police and the National Prosecuting Authority had cleared Palmer of wrongdoing, she said. |

Gun control failed again, and more innocents died. Now, anti-gun politicians need someone to blame.
The media didn't tell you universal background checks failed. Gun-free zones failed. Even mandatory reporting of mental illness failed to stop recent public violence. Time and again we see innocents murdered in gun-free paradise.
Politicians need someone to blame for their failed policy. Honest gun owners and the NRA are the chosen scapegoats. |

Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Jeanice Swift will testify against a bill that would allow concealed guns in schools.
Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville, introduced legislation that would prevent open carry in schools, but allow concealed pistol license holders to get an endorsement that allows them to carry concealed weapons.
Legislators will review the bill Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Senate Judiciary Committee, and from there it could move onto the Senate floor.
In March, a man openly carried a gun into Pioneer High School, prompting the Board of Education to create policies that ban guns from school buildings.

Gun control is back in the news after the recent Oregon college shooting with President Obama considering executive action on gun background checks. Predictably the President is pushing what he describes as “common sense” laws, although without specifically saying what such laws would be. The premise of the left is that there are too many guns out there and more guns means more mass shootings. |

In the aftermath of the Oregon college shooting that left 10 people dead and nine more injured, conservative politicians and pundits offered their familiar prescription for halting mass shootings: even more guns: “If you had a couple of the teachers or somebody with guns in that room, you would’ve been a hell of a lot better off,” said GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. Ted Nugent, an NRA board member, went event further, saying that just about every member of our populace should carry a concealed weapon. “Disarmed and helpless is an irresponsible, suicidal choice that will get you killed. Defend yourself.” |

If your gut tells you that mass public shootings are alarmingly common, your gut’s right.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines a mass murder as four or more deaths during a single incident with no distinct time period between killings. By this definition, according to Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox, between 1980 and 2010 there were an average of 20 mass murders per year, or an average of one every 2.6 weeks.

Allow me to begin this article by offering my condolences to the families affected by the mind-numbing events of the past two weeks on the campuses of Umpqua Community College, Northern Arizona University and Texas Southern University.
These shootings have once again sparked the national debate on gun control. As both sides are deeply entrenched in their views, we need to examine what policies are most effective at reducing gun violence while at the same time preserving our individual rights to bear arms.

After an atrocity like the shootings at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, what’s needed is hard-headed realism, not pie-in-the-sky utopianism. Unfortunately we always get more of the latter than the former.
That a person could walk into a roomful of innocent people, open fire, and kill in cold blood is beyond almost anyone’s imagination. We naturally wonder what “causes” someone to do that and what could prevent it. But the search for solutions soon reaches a fork in the road: one branch represents logical thinking, the other mere wishful “thinking” with no rational connection to the problem at hand

In his emotional speech last week after the mass shooting in Oregon, he all but conceded that the National Rifle Association has, sadly, stymied his repeated attempts to persuade Congress to eliminate mass shootings through “common sense” legislation to reform America’s generations-old gun-crazy society. The gunman killed nine before killing himself. Under the proposed change, dealers exceeding a certain number of sales each year will reportedly have to obtain a license from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and conduct background checks on potential buyers. These retailers would then be subject to the same laws regarding background checks which apply to current gun dealers.

The Bill of Rights, the idyllic title assigned to the first 10 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, is what most Americans lean on when it comes to truly defining what it means to be an American. Of these first 10 Amendments, however, most Americans could probably only name three. The three most talked about amendments being the First Amendment (the freedom of speech and religion, etc.), the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms…), and the Fifth Amendment (what gangsters plead when they’re on the witness stand in movies). |

In New York last month the glitterati descended on Manhattan for its annual Fashion Week. A week later in Fayetteville, North Carolina, some highly specialized designs were showcased on a much smaller runway.
A women’s shooting group called the Gun Powder Gals hosted a fashion show at a local VFW post that featured bra holsters, corset holsters, and thigh holsters. Such fashion shows have recently popped up in other states, seemingly in response to a reported spike in women buying guns for self-defense and sport.

A bill that would trade open carry weapons for concealed weapons in areas like schools and day care centers is up for a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee this week.
Right now in Michigan, concealed pistol license holders can openly carry weapons in areas that are off-limits to concealed weapons, like schools, day care centers, sports arenas and bars.
Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville, introduced legislation that's essentially a trade. It takes away open carry in those areas but allows CPL holders to get an endorsement that allows them to carry there.
Green has described his bill as a peace pipe designed to ease tensions between gun rights groups and school officials. |
