They’ve all been convinced that they have to give up something ever since Newtown — I know because I was privy to some conversations and correspondence at the time where a few of us let it be known that we would not allow them to scapegoat gun owners and walk away unreported. And they’re all subscribing to the absurd, not-found-in-Nature theory that that you can throw a scrap of flesh to a pack of circling jackals, and sated, they’ll go away and leave you alone. Instead of deciding there’s plenty more where that came from.
“Oh, but you fail to understand the genius move,” I’ve been told by “pragmatic” NRA apologists. Bump stocks aren’t a hill worth dying on. |

Often maligned for the level of violence around metro Detroit, the three-county area surrounding the city has some of the lowest per capita legal handgun ownership in the state, according to an analysis of the latest data from Michigan State Police.
MSP statistics updated as of Oct. 2, show rates for the metro area of approved concealed pistol licenses at 68 firearms per every 1,000 residents in Macomb, about 62 in Wayne and 61 in Oakland County, according to a Free Press analysis. That’s nearly half the rate of legal gun ownership of some of the more rural parts of the state, such as Alcona, Keweenaw and Montmorency counties, which tallied 122, 119 and 114 approved licenses per 1,000 residents, according to the analysis. |

Hunters across southeast Michigan are being asked to keep an eye out for pieces of evidence connected with the disappearance of Danielle Stislicki.
Stislicki has been missing since Dec 2, '16. She left her job at MetLife in Southfield that day and was supposed to meet a friend for dinner. However, she never showed up for dinner and has not been seen or heard from since.
Investigators have been searching for several items related to the case, including Stislicki's blue Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 jacket, jeans, burgundy boots and a black zip-up shirt. Her keys and her Galaxy Prime Core phone in a rose gold case were never found.
Hunters also are asked to keep an eye out for any pieces of luggage or containers that look out of place.

Investigators used videos from the mobile app Snapchat to identify and locate three teens involved in a string of gun shop larceny attempts in the Grand Rapids area.
The videos led officers to a red Jeep occupied by Desiree Taggart, 17, Cameron Ellis-Ayers, 18, and an additional juvenile on Sept. 26 -- two days after guns were stolen from Barracks 616 in Cascade Township.
Taggart and Ellis-Ayers were arrested and have since been charged as adults. The juvenile was charged a few days later.
During the larceny at Barracks 616, police said 20 handguns -- some very unique and expensive -- were stolen. Unsuccessful attempts were also made at Rylee's Ace Hardware and Bachelder Master Gun Makers in Grand Rapids. |

Chief Justice Stephen Markman pressed Baughman on what legislators intended when they passed the law in 2006, and whether someone like Wafer was “entitled to be full of piss and vinegar in reacting to the circumstances he confronted at 4 in the morning.”
Markman also asked the defense if a greater impact may have occurred when the trial court “quite wrongly” gave jurors inconsistent instructions about whether Wafer had a duty to retreat from the potential confrontation, which he did not.
The jury should have understood “he had no obligation to cower in the corner, no obligation to avoid conflict,” Markman said. |

Two months after the deadly white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia, the city and a group of local business owners headed to court Thursday to file a novel lawsuit to prevent what they call "private militia" groups from wreaking havoc on the town once again.
Using state laws prohibiting "unlawful paramilitary activity" and private citizens from falsely posing as law enforcement, the new lawsuit was filed against more than more than 20 individuals, self-described militia groups, and white nationalist organizations, including several leaders of the "Unite the Right" rally back in August. |

No mention of self-defense or protecting one’s property or your loved ones.
Gun laws would not have prevented the tragic events in Las Vegas. The perpetrator was not a criminal prior to his unfathomable actions. Background checks would have done nothing to stop him.
Guns are woven into the fabric of our country. They are not going away. And to equate a citizen who wants to own a semi-automatic rifle with a 30-round clip with a man suffering from erectile dysfunction is immature. To disparage our Founding Fathers and the Constitution by back-handedly calling them racists, just to buttress your own beliefs about guns is myopic. |

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was a strong supporter of the constitutional right to keep and bear arms before he was grievously wounded by a gunman's bullet as he and other members of the Republican congressional baseball team practiced at a suburban Virginia park back on June 14.
He somehow managed to drag himself from second base into the outfield as the gunman continued firing. If Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, an Iraq war veteran and medical doctor, had not been able to reach Scalise and improvise a tourniquet with a colleague's belt, the Louisiana congressman likely would have bled to death on the field. |

Take gun policy for an example of a powerful lobby’s influence. The National Rifle Association (NRA) is a powerful lobby. The organization is wealthy and influential; so much so in fact, it acts as though it were a branch of government.
The NRA started as a small community organization for recreational shooting. In 1975, the NRA “went political” and began running political ads against proposed gun restrictions. That was the beginning of the end leading to today.
The gun manufacturing lobby has become one of the largest and most powerful special interest lobbies in the United States. The organization utilizes millions of dollars of profit, donating it to elected officials who agree to vote the way the lobby desires on gun legislation. |

We all want to know what would drive any individual to commit such a heinous act, and as the investigations continue, we will hopefully learn more about why. Everyone in our country wants to prevent these types of tragedies from ever occurring again.
Unfortunately, there are no easy answers or a single solution. As a gun owner myself, I am appalled and saddened about what happened in Las Vegas.
I also realize that there will always be bad guys and it is not worth trading away our individual ability for to defend ourselves from those bad guys or our own government should it ever go against its own citizenry. |

Once again we are sickened by the horrible violence incited by a maniac with a legal weapon designed to kill large numbers of people. Again and again these terrible acts occur and all the Republicans do is offer prayers and sympathy to the families who have lost loved ones. America is not safe from gun violence and the Congress does nothing to prevent this. One reason that a government exists is to keep its citizens safe, so something must be done to keep these weapons of mass destruction from getting into the wrong hands. How do we do this? Ban them! |

The first opportunity for hunters to go after deer with a modern rifle this fall will take place with the early hunt for antlerless deer on private lands. The special season will open on Saturday, and runs through next Wednesday. Hunters are encouraged to harvest antlerless deer early in the season for a variety of reasons. A balanced harvest helps produce a balanced deer population. Removing older, dominant and often barren females early in the season removes them from the nutrition equation and allows more forage for other productive does and yearlings. |

Not long ago, few people had ever heard of a bump fire stock.
Now, following the largest mass shooting in this country ever committed by an individual, those two words are dominating headlines, and there has even already been legislation introduced to institute a nationwide ban on the device.
The inspiration behind bump fire stocks comes from a trick some shooters are able to pull off with a semiautomatic weapon to significantly increase the firing rate. When firing, if a shooter hooks their thumb onto their belt loop, they can push forward on a pistol grip while shooting, achieving a firing rate which approaches that of automatic weapons. |

Yes: Outrage over Las Vegas must outlive news and election cycles
The story is becoming so common we can almost predict the timeline.
A mass shooting terrorizes a community. The community and country cycle through fear, anger and sadness. News outlets cover the story for several days. Politicians send their thoughts and prayers. Change in our gun laws is bantered around, and vigils are held. The National Rifle Association and its legal and political allies largely remain silent or call for a cooling-off period.

A California college student has filed suit against MGM, Live Nation, bump stock manufacturers and the estate of Stephen Paddock after getting shot during the Route 91 Harvest Festival massacre in Las Vegas. The suit, filed on behalf of Paige Gasper, 21, claims that MGM Resorts International -- which owns the Mandalay Bay hotel from which Paddock opened fire and the venue that hosted the country music event -- is liable for the mass shooting, along with concert promoter Live Nation and the makers of the after-market gun accessory that allowed the shooter to fire his semi-automatic rifles in a manner that mimics the rapidity of long-banned automatic weapons, according to CNN. |

I realize many local hunters belong to the NRA, and I mean no disrespect. But I also know some boys never grow up and still want to play army as an adult, and just have to have an automatic weapon for their collection. But what happened in Las Vegas was not a game. The radically increased danger to law enforcement from automatic weapons in the hand of criminals is not funny.
I know the NRA claims to stand for the little guy/gal who just likes to shoot skeet once in a while, but that's a trick. The NRA is about protecting gun manufacturer's and gun seller's profits. |

Nevada's congressional Democrats have joined in legislation that would bar the sale, importation or possession of gun magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
Reps. Jacky Rosen, Dina Titus and Ruben Kihuen all signed on the "Keep Americans Safe Act," authored by Elizabeth Esty of Connecticut.
Rosen said there's no single solution to the gun violence and the massacre that occurred in Las Vegas but restricting the number of rounds a weapon's magazine can carry would reduce the threat.
"High capacity magazines have no practical purpose for hunting or self defense," she said. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. — George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970). |
