... "'The public overwhelmingly supports a significant expansion in the FBI’s ability to investigate militia groups,' the polls-over-principles Morris wrote at the time to then-Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, as well as then-Deputy Chiefs of Staff Erskine Bowles and Harold Ickes. 'If you and the Justice Department believe such an expansion would be in the public interest, I would recommend that we go ahead with it with a high profile announcement.'" ...

Silencer Review: Liberty Mystic-X

"Everyone agrees that silencers are awesome, and make the shooting experience way more enjoyable. Even so, silencer ownership is still relatively uncommon in the United States. The number one reason I keep hearing from people as to why they don’t buy one is that the barrier to entry is still way too high for the end result. Silencers are expensive, the wait while the paperwork is processed is a pain in the butt, and at the end you have a can with a limited capability. It seemed like you needed three silencers to cover all the bases, namely a rimfire can, a pistol can, and a rifle can. But what if all of those excuses suddenly disappeared?" ...

"Everytown for Gun Safety's Gun Sense Voter roadshow stops in Portland today as part of the organization's campaign to build a constituency of Americans who will vote on gun safety this November and in future elections. Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a project of Everytown for Gun Safety, will join the Maine chapter of Moms, local gun violence survivors and other gun safety advocates to mobilize support for U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Everytown-endorsed candidate in Maine. Judi Richardson, whose daughter, Darien, died after being shot by a masked intruder in her Portland apartment in 2010, will join the roadshow stop to help galvanize support." ...

"'IT’S ALL THAT MATTERS,' Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America’s Facebook page proclaims, referring to the favorite saying of Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung. That’s the Sandy Hook Elementary School principal [name redacted] shot and killed on Dec. 14, 2012. MDA’s asking its Facebook followers to like, share and join their civilian disarmament jihad while honoring Ms. Hochsprung’s homily. Because all you need is love. Not those icky guns. C’mon, I hear you mutter. Really? Well now that you mention it . . ." ...

"Robbers who use clubs are very dangerous. Broken limbs and cracked skulls are nothing to play around with. And those who wield them often believe that they have to strike their victim to demonstrate their seriousness. In this case, the would-be robber made a mistake in the victim selection process. When choosing a hold-up victim Sunday evening, Bobby Dean Hall chose a CCW holder who drew his gun when threatened. Hall then beat feet, but the armed citizen was able to give a good description to the police, who quickly made an arrest . . ." ...

"Gun control, that perennial hot topic in American politics, has a long and storied past. In the United States, its nefarious roots reach back to the Antebellum South, when Democrat politicians in the southern states passed 'Black Codes' to deprive newly emancipated slaves of their Second Amendment rights. It played out in full in 1930s Germany, when the Nazis used a national gun registry to identify and disarm its political opposition and the Jewish citizenry." ...

"Attorney General Luther Strange showed off major NRA support on Monday, while his opponent, Joe Hubbard, said Strange is distorting his own and Hubbard's records on gun rights."

"James W. Porter II, the NRA president, endorsed Strange on Monday ..."

"Strange, a Republican, boasted of the group's endorsement. Porter said Strange was very supportive of Second Amendment rights by filing court briefs arguing against gun regulations in other states."

"But state Rep. Joe Hubbard, D-Montgomery, Strange's opponent in the Nov. 4 election, said Strange hardly has a perfect record on guns. Hubbard notes that Strange did not support allowing open-carried guns inside polling places." ...

"But she confesses she had never truly contemplated what would happen if a gunman forced his way into her workplace and opened fire."

"Yet on July 28, 2006, Naveed Haq ... [entered] the offices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, where Stumbo worked ... In the bloody rampage that followed, Haq ... shot Stumbo and five of her co-workers, killing one." ...

"So when a new group called the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility formed in 2013 and wanted to try something novel, Stumbo agreed to step even further into the fray. ..." ...

"I am a sophomore student at Delta Community College taking a political science class to learn about the fascinating and complicated system we call the 'government.' However, I have been interested in politics long before I was considering colleges. One issue that disturbs me greatly is the controversy of gun control, or gun rights, depending on which side you stand. As is commonly known, the federal government has been and is trying to restrict the types of firearms citizens can legally own, as well as the magazine capacity. ..."

"Granted, some ideas of gun control have good meaning — such as background checks ... But after this our American rights are being stepped on. ..." ...

"Calling the Attorney General contest a "critical election for the future of our Second Amendment rights," the NRA today wholeheartedly endorsed Brad Schimel."

"'Brad Schimel will oppose any attempt to infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens,' said Chris W. Cox, chairman of the NRA-PVF. 'In contrast, his opponent has said she supports additional restrictions on right to carry permit holders. This is a critical election for the future of our Second Amendment rights and Wisconsin needs an Attorney General like Brad Schimel protecting our freedoms.'" ...

"Last week Washington State Republican Party issued a press release formally opposing Washington’s anti-gun Initiative 594."

"Drafted under the guise of preventing crime and funded almost solely by elitist billionaires with a proud background of stifling the Second Amendment, I-594 is an 18-page document that does nothing but impose heavy legal burdens on law-abiding gun owners and serious penalties for violations." ...

"So there’s a new Elway poll out, as you may have heard. It tracks support of Washington’s two competing gun background check initiatives, I-591 and I-594. While there was a time when polls showed both efforts passing, the latest numbers - based on a poll taken earlier this month - shows I-594 being supported by 60 percent of voters, while I-591 is down to 39 percent support."

"I-594 - which has raked in nearly $8 million in support from the likes of Bill and Melinda Gates... and Michael Bloomberg - would expand gun background checks in Washington and close the so-called gun-show loophole. I-591, meanwhile, is being championed by well-known gun rights advocate Alan Gottlieb and his Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation. ..." ...

"The ad highlights these written comments in May from the National Association for Gun Rights, a Colorado-based group formed in 2000, against Zinke in the Republican primary: 'Do not believe Ryan Zinke’s claims on being ‘pro-gun.’ Zinke is on record voting against your gun rights. Do you want a representative in D.C. voting the same way?'"

"With Mr. Brady’s passing, the veep couldn’t wait to announce that he was looking for another high-profile shooting victim to assist the administration’s push to take guns away from ordinary, law-abiding Americans."

"Across the country, a thriving dissatisfaction with the U.S. government is prompting a growing spate of bills in state legislatures aimed at defying federal control over firearms - more than 200 during the last decade, a News21 investigation found."

"Particularly in Western and Southern states, where individual liberty intersects with increasing skepticism among gun owners, firearms are a political vehicle in efforts to ensure states’ rights and void U.S. gun laws within their borders. State legislators are attempting to declare that only they have the right to interpret the Second Amendment, a movement that recalls the anti-federal spirit of the Civil War and civil-rights eras." ...

... "Gun control:"

"Because little battles in this area by definition become big battles, veins are popping across the state over this attempt by gun owners' rights proponents to grant the National Rifle Association legal standing to challenge about 50 local gun ordinances that are tighter than state law."

"Gun control advocates see this as a bullying intrusion on the ability of towns and cities to fight crime on their own terms: 'Where I come from, bad people have guns,' said Rep. Mike O'Brien, D-Philadelphia, during the recent House debate. 'People who have guns, hurt you.'" ...

"Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler says he made the decision based on what he says is a vague 2013 law prohibiting people from carrying guns at events where admission is charged."

"While I support an individual’s right to own firearms under the Second Amendment, I also support the SAFE Act, which does not preclude gun ownership by law-abiding citizens. About two-thirds of New York voters also support the act, although support varies by location in the state."

"Even under the SAFE Act, people can still own as many and varied types of firearms as they desire. The SAFE Act is intended to minimize the harm caused by criminals and people who are mentally ill." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"You seem ... to consider the judges as the ultimate arbiters of all contitutional questions; a very dangerous doctrine indeed, and one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy... The Contitution has erected no such single tribunal." --Thomas Jefferson, 1820
