... "A Kalispell man shot a stalking grizzly bear in the Swan Mountains and a Fortine man shot a grizzly at close range, narrowly escaping as the bear charged from a chicken coop."

"James Beeman picked up a .410-gauge shotgun when he went outside his Fortine-area home to investigate a commotion from his chicken coop around 4 a.m. Sunday."

"Wearing a headlamp and expecting a skunk, Beeman saw two bear cubs run from the damaged door of the chicken coop. Then an adult grizzly bear emerged with a chicken in its mouth."

"The bear dropped the chicken and charged from 15 feet. Beeman fired, with the muzzle of the gun roughly three feet from the bear, which crumpled to ground, dead at Beeman's feet." ...

"The state's 130-year-old ban on concealed weapons would be lifted under legislation a state Senate committee approved Monday after making changes supporters said would generate more support for the bill."

"Three Republicans on the Senate Judiciary, Corrections and Privacy Committee voted in favor of the bill; the committee's two Democrats were not in attendance."

"Sen. Dave Zien, R-Eau Claire, the committee's chairman and one of the bill's authors, said the proposal would go before the full Senate for a vote next week. It has to pass both house of the Legislature and be signed by Gov. Jim Doyle to become law." ...

SPRINGFIELD -- "The Greene County Sheriff’s Department began taking applications for concealed weapons permits on Tuesday, even though opponents have the new law tied up in court. Sheriff Jack Merritt figures the lawsuit simply delays the inevitable."

"A group of gun control advocates from Kansas City and St. Louis sued last week to block the law that would let more citizens legally carry concealed weapons. A judge in St. Louis issued a temporary injunction that orders the state not to let the law go into effect until the Missouri Supreme Court decides whether the law violates the state Constitution. That could take several weeks to several days. Judge Steven Omer has a hearing scheduled for Sep. 23 to hear arguments about the law and the Constitution. If Ohmer issues a permanent injunction against the law, the Supreme Court will get involved in the case."

"Before the temporary injunction, the sheriff's department had appointments scheduled for people who want to apply for concealed permits. Merritt let people keep those appointments and will start processing the applications in case the law is allowed to go into effect." ...

"Sanders of Warwick, N.Y., must explain to a judge why he killed a black bear that twice chased his children and some neighbor kids, and then rushed directly at him." ...

"He called the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, one of whose officers issued Sanders a summons charging him with discharging firearms within 500 feet of a residence, which is kind of preposterous. What was Sanders supposed to do, yell "time out" and politely invite the bear to join him 500 feet away for the final showdown, and may the better mammal win?"

"That 500-foot rule is usually applied to careless hunters, not to a man protecting himself from an angry carnivore with deadly claws and well-developed teeth."

"DeKalb County Commissioner Lou Walker paid a $300 fine and began 12 months on probation Tuesday after admitting he carried a handgun into Hartsfield International Airport."

"An X-ray machine detected an unlicensed Davis .380-caliber automatic in Walker's carry-on bag Aug. 8. He told police he had forgotten the gun was there."

"Walker, a former Chicago police vice detective, said a few days later that newspapers and TV stations had sensationalized the case."

"However, his attorney, Chuck Driebe, said Tuesday that publicizing the story was appropriate as a deterrent 'so people won't act dumb in the future.' "

"Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) have introduced similar legislation in Congress that would reestablish the Second Amendment right to bear arms for the citizens of the District of Columbia."

" 'The District of Columbia Personal Protection Act,' or H.R. 3191, which currently has 111 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle would reverse the ban on guns in the District of Columbia."

" 'The District of Columbia is a failed laboratory experiment for gun control,' Souder contended in defense of his bill. 'It has one of the most comprehensive bans on firearms in the nation, and it also has one of the highest violent crime rates in the nation.' "

"A new study by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March provides a roadmap for closing the loopholes that allow domestic violence abusers to purchase or possess firearms. Firearms are the most common weapons used by males to murder females and often the perpetrator kills more than one person; other victims include children, mediators and bystanders. In 2000, 58% of female homicide victims were killed with a firearm."

"I have sat on the 54 clutching my children in fear as some young teen held a gun to a girl jokingly because she wouldn't give him her number. 'Ha ha ha ha, f--- you, b----, I'll shoot you in your a--,' he yells, and he and his friends cackle as they exit the back door."

"Once, I saw some youngster who had to be no older than 14 remove his gun from his waist and slide it into his jacket. In plain view, in a 'just to let you know' sort of way." ...

In most areas of California, it is very difficult to acquire government permission to legally carry a firearm for self-defense. San Francisco is definitely one of those places. Street thugs know they have the advantage of law-abiding people -- and they clearly exploit that advantage.

"Congress is getting close to safeguarding gun manufacturers from suits blaming them when their products are used in crimes, and one gun-control advocate is more than a little perplexed, according to a news account. He was quoted as asking why the gun industry deserves 'special protection.' "

"The tort system is being abused by advocacy lawyers and officials who don't believe in the democratic process of decision-making, and, meanwhile, some irresponsible judges are allowing the craziness to proceed."

"Boil it down to its essentials, and the argument of these lawyers is that the manufacturers should somehow figure out when criminals are going to get hold of their products and prevent it."

A gun was found Tuesday afternoon in a car in the parking lot of Whetstone High School, NewsChannel 4 reported.

A Columbus Public Schools representative said one student was taken into custody after police found a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol hidden under the seat of a car.

The incident happened at about 1:30 p.m.

School officials said the student flashed a gun in a restroom and demanded money from another student. That student informed the school officer, who found the gun in the car.

School officials did not immediately release the age of the student that is in custody.

"Richard Riordan, 59, a Navy tire repairman who lives nearby, said he was driving by the center as the two officers were restraining Venable. Bella Vistans who wear badges weren't sitting idle on Public Safety Day. The local division of the Benton County Sheriff's Office offered more than a dozen displays and demonstrations.

Sgt. John Scott explained the contraband and the circumstances of its acquisition to many interested people. Scott, who had sons Marshall and Dylan with him (no pun intended, he said), pointed out one particularly lethal-looking gun and said it was taken from someone he believes intended to rob the All-In-One convenience store on U.S. Highway 71.

"We got them before they even got out of the car," he explained.

IT is not just residents of inner cities who have to be wary of the increase in gun crime. Reporters Clare Kelly and James Clements look at its impact on south Bucks

THIS year is likely to be remembered for the horrific growth in gun crime.

The killing of two sisters in Birmingham prompted a nationwide gun amnesty.

A mother in Nottingham was shot protecting her daughter.

A man in Leicester was shot in what could have been a road-rage incident and two other men in Reading were shot in a 'drive-by' shooting.

But despite the local success in a gun amnesty, criminals continue arming themselves with real or imitation weapons. [emphasis added]

[Original title: Call for police gun-control powers]

THE Carr Government should consider giving police powers to conduct random car searches for illegal handguns, the NSW Opposition police spokesman Peter Debnam said today.

Mr Debnam was speaking after four separate shooting incidents, resulting in two deaths in one of the shootings, in NSW in the past 48 hours.

"It really is time (Premier) Bob Carr moved beyond denial and admitted there was a crisis with gun violence on the streets of NSW, especially in southwest Sydney," he told reporters.

"What we need to the Government to do is look at a legislative response."
