Everybody remembers that Top Gun (see original movie trailer here) colloquy about air-to-air combat tactics between student fighter pilot “Maverick” played by Tom Cruise and instructor “Charlie” played by Kelly McGilles:
Charlie: A rolling reversal would look well in that situation. Maverick: If I reversed in a hard cross I could immediately go to guns on him. Charlie: Yeah, but at that speed it’s too fast. It’s a little bit too aggressive. Maverick: Too aggressive, yeah I guess when I see something I go right after it.
But so far Maverick’s “going to guns” tactic appears too aggressive for both moderators and candidates at the Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates.

It was one of those little stories that most people miss, even more so when it is released during a heated presidential election. But it is one that is critically important because it represents an unprecedented power grab by the one profession that has arguably done more damage to America than any other. If Americans don’t demand an end to this nonsense, we have no one to blame but ourselves. The details of the story are both simple and infuriating: a New York appeals court in has ruled that a former high school athlete shot in 2003 can sue—the companies that made and distributed the handgun used to shoot him. |

Local politicians in South Bend, Ind., are circumventing state law to limit firearm and ammunition sales.
Without a complaint of a crime being committed, the nine-member South Bend City Council arm twisted a local Walmart store to follow firearm sale regulations declared in an agreement made between the two entities on June 13, 2011. Yet effective July 1, 2011 state law says “a political subdivision may not regulate firearms, ammunition, and firearm accessories”. |

WH Smith has banned children from buying magazines about shooting – even though it is legal for them to own a gun.
Britain’s biggest newsagent has introduced an over-14s limit on all copies of country sports magazines following a campaign by animal rights activists.
The retailer, whose founding family owned a highly prized shoot in Buckinghamshire, will enforce the restriction on hobby magazines including Shooting Times, because it understood children are not allowed to obtain a firearms certificate until they are 14. |

Paul Barrett, author of 'Glock: The Rise America's Gun,' will join The Daily Circuit to discuss gun control.
"We fixate, understandably, on the aberrational mass-shooting events, but they're actually not our main social problem," Barrett said on NPR. "Our main social problem is the overall gun homicide rate." |

John Krotec's camping store is a long way from a typical gun shop. For the past two decades, Krotec and his wife, Ann, have sold camping equipment and climbing gear from their Environeers adventure travel store, now nestled between a Publix supermarket and a CVS pharmacy in a Sarasota strip center.
But two years ago, Krotec, a U.S. Army veteran and an avid shooter, decided to indulge a passion and expand his line of merchandise. It started small: He began by ordering firearms for customers and conducting firearms transfers, mostly of high-end weapons and investment-grade guns. |

Since 2005, at least 20 states have followed Florida’s lead and adopted Stand Your Ground self-defense laws, resulting in a heated debate nationwide over their value and to tragic, bitter disputes over individual cases in which people were killed.
Stand Your Ground laws reverse a centuries-old legal tenet: If you were outside your own home and felt threatened, you had a duty to retreat if it was safe to do so and try to avoid violence. But Stand Your Ground statutes say you can defend yourself with lethal force anywhere it is legal for you to be. You have no duty to retreat. |

Entering into physical combat is not something generally done by “civilized” man. Many people are taught throughout their lives that talking and compromise are always the best solutions to any conflict. And if violence need be done, the best alternative is to call upon some member of government to take action.
This type of thinking is pervasive beyond the academic elites decrying the use of the military to protect our national interests. All too often, people apply this fallacious logic to their own use of force in defense of themselves and others. |

Let's forget for a moment that George Zimmerman is Hispanic, not white. What Mr. Crump is saying is that race is an issue in the George Zimmerman case because, he insists, that if a black man shot a white person in a similar situation, the black man would have been immediately arrested. This is not an indictment of George Zimmerman; this is fundamentally an accusation that the Sanford Police Department acted in a racist way, and that perhaps the criminal justice system at large is biased against Black men.

Gun-rights groups perceive President Barack Obama as a threat to unfettered access to firearms. They once had qualms about Mitt Romney, too.
But times and circumstances have changed for Romney, the GOP presidential nominee now in tune with the National Rifle Association and similar organizations, whose members are motivated voters.
In the tight White House race, every bit of support helps, especially in the most closely contested states and particularly from groups that claim millions of members nationwide. |

Tuesday evening, Cefalu was asked to meet Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Field Division Joseph Riehl at a Denny's Restaurant near Lake Tahoe. When he arrived, he was served termination papers in the parking lot. Classy move. The exchange was secretly recorded by a confidential source. |

A 12-year-old girl suffered burns to one side of her body when a flash grenade went off next to her as a police SWAT team raided a West End home Tuesday morning. "She has first- and second-degree burns down the left side of her body and on her arms," said the girl's mother, Jackie Fasching. "She's got severe pain. Every time I think about it, it brings tears to my eyes." Medical staff at the scene tended to the girl afterward and then her mother drove her to the hospital, where she was treated and released later that day. A photo of the girl provided by Fasching to The Gazette shows red and black burns on her side.
