While it has been more than two years since her sister's death, Shirley Paeth said it is still hard to believe her sister is gone.

Nellie Jo Pearson, 40, of Port Huron, was shot in a friend's home on Sept. 13, 2014.

The man who shot her didn't know the gun was loaded.

"The situation was pretty simple," said Paeth, 54, of Shelby Township. "We were told the gun was sitting on the counter. Earlier in the day the guys were dry-firing it. The guy that picked it up didn't know it had been loaded by its owner, so he aimed it at her. We will never know the whole story or why he aimed it at her or why he pulled the trigger, though."

Reaves said being careless is not accidental.

"It was not the gun," she said.

A new study of gun ownership in the United States notes a shift: Americans are increasingly interested in handguns, the types of small weapons that are easily hidden and used for self-defense, rather than rifles and shotguns used for hunting and shooting sports.

The study, conducted in 2015 by researchers from Harvard and Northeastern universities, sought to better understand the size and composition of the country's gun inventory. It found that handguns made up 42 percent of the country's privately owned firearms, up from 34 percent in 1994.

In my post earlier this week, I attempted to make the case for what happens when one votes for the lesser evil and how that ultimately results in a continued race to the bottom of the barrel. If this year’s election proves anything, it should affirm that truth, with a couple of candidates who may be amongst the most depraved and immoral ones in our nation’s history.

Ed.: At the bottom is a comparison of Castle (Const.), Johnson (L), and McMullen (I) on gun rights and other issues.

IA: Iowa ranks 20th in accidental shootings involving children

In Iowa, gun owners are not required to keep their weapons under lock and key. State law requires only that an owner secure a weapon if there is reason to believe a child younger than 14 could likely gain access to it. Even then, gun owners can choose whether to use a lockbox, trigger lock or simply relocate the weapon to a place that "a reasonable person would believe to be secure from a minor."

Those who violate the law can be charged with a serious misdemeanor. But charges are filed only in cases when a child has gained access to a gun and displayed it illegally, or used the weapon to injure or kill someone.

Using a knife for self-defense is a bad idea.

Let me get that out of the way. By writing this post, I’m getting into pretty controversial territory. Many people, both trained and amateurs, insist that a knife should never be used for self-defense unless you’ve undergone intensive training. Even so, you might want to avoid whipping out a knife at all costs.

According to the police report read in court Wednesday afternoon, the resident’s security company alerted him of a possible break-in at his home. He grabbed his gun and went outside where he saw two men running from his shed. He yelled at them to stop!

One man kept running but the other stopped. The resident told police said the man appeared to reach for his waistband. That’s when the resident shot the 53-year-old man in his neck. The shot resulted in critical injuries.

Liberal politician Deborah Ross says she is for “individual freedom and personal liberty,” but this could not be further from the truth, as her voting record proves otherwise.

Ross supports anti-gun Supreme Court nominees. She opposed your right to carry or purchase a gun and even your fundamental right of self-defense. She would not oppose gun confiscation for some Social Security recipients, and she would not oppose the United Nations gun ban treaty. She is willing to surrender America’s sovereignty to a foreign power.

Candidates for Defiance County sheriff shared similar thoughts on Second Amendment rights at the Defiance County Fish and Game Club Thursday night.

About 100 persons attended the event at the club, located northwest of Defiance on Ohio 15.

Republican Doug Engel and write-in Steve Flory — campaigning to replace David Westrick, who is not seeking a ninth term — were invited to speak at the club’s regular meeting Thursday.

A former sheriff’s deputy, Flory opened, quoting founding fathers George Washington and John Adams in defending the Second Amendment and its provision for allowing the citizenry to bear arms. Specifically, he noted Adams’ remark that the amendment assures the “private self-defense” of citizens.

No matter the outcome of the 2016 U.S. Senate and House races, Hillary Clinton, if victorious, intends to attack your gun rights. Recently leaked emails of Clinton campaign staffers published by WikiLeaks show that the candidate plans to bypass Congress to enact gun control by executive order. Moreover, undercover video of U.S. Senate candidate Russ Feingold, released this week by James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas, further exposed Clinton’s intent to impose new gun restrictions by executive fiat.

Almost half – 49 percent – of Floridians support a ban on the sale of semi-automatic assault weapons, while 37 percent oppose it. Support for the ban is strongest among women, older residents and African-Americans.

Six out of 10 Floridians want to make it harder or impossible for a felon to regain gun ownership rights, with strongest support for the idea coming from women, older Floridians and households with a young child.

...

Forty-two percent of Floridians support the recreational use of marijuana, with 40 percent opposed. Thirty percent support repealing the death penalty, with 44 percent opposed. Some 27 percent support repealing the Stand Your Ground self-defense law, with 43 percent opposed.

Hillary Clinton Is The Greatest Threat to the Second Amendment Ever

September marked the 15th consecutive month that gun sales hit a record high. But with this election cycle, is that really surprising? Hillary Clinton has continually talked about how she would push for gun control if she were President. She would use the Supreme Court to axe the Second Amendment and urge Congress to pass “common sense gun laws” – whatever that means.

Whenever a politician talks about limiting the right to bear arms, law-abiding gun owners flock to gun stores to purchase new firearms and stock up on ammo. They sign up for training and tactical classes. Gun owners both new and old are applying for concealed carry permits.

I was lucky enough to be in the front row for Pat’s last seminar on ARs at the NRA’s Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, PA this past February where he talked frankly about lubes, UTMs, training and the National Rifle Association.

On January 26, 2015, survivors of victims killed by a deranged man at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut sued the maker and distributor of the firearm he used in his crimes.

This afternoon, a judge issued a ruling in the case, Soto v. Bushmaster, that held the defendants were entitled to immunity from the suit.

The defendants in the case originally asked the court to dismiss the complaint under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which was enacted in 2005 to prohibit frivolous suits against firearm makers for criminal acts committed with their products by unaffiliated third parties.

If you’re like me, you have gotten into the “adult coloring book” fad. It really is relaxing. And why should kids be the only one to enjoy coloring?!

Well now you can put away the abstract and flower coloring books, gun owners because the NRA has partnered with Kimberly Kolb Eakin, a retired Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, to provide “Full Metal Coloring,” a coloring book for gun lovers.

One hundred and fifty years ago, my great-great-great-grandfather, Oliver Winchester, founded the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in New Haven, Connecticut. His pride and joy was the revolutionary Winchester repeating rifle, one of the first guns to fire rounds repeatedly, taking away the cumbersome need to stop and reload.

The political division comes down to the character of the populations the officers serve. Appointed police chiefs tend to come from more populous cities, where gun control policies enjoy greater support, while elected sheriffs represent largely rural populations, who hold fast to a strong tradition of gun ownership.

“Law enforcement leadership here in the state of Maine reflects the larger debate between those supporting gun control and those wanting to promote strict Second Amendment rights,” said Dale Brooker, an associate professor of criminal justice at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.

The Sig P320 series of pistols are very adaptable and overall known as very good performing handguns.

There are 4 versions of the Sig Sauer striker-fired P320: the Full-Size, Carry, Compact, and SIG SAUER P320 SubCompact Pistol, all in 9mm Luger. I have shot and own all of them at my own expense. There are other calibers available in .40 S&W, .357 SIG, and .45 ACP. I am impressed with the handgun’s adaptability, modularity, reliability, and quality.

Historical evidence suggests that “assault weapons” – firearms that can hold larger capacities of ammunition and operate at faster rates of fire (at least that’s one of the myriad definitions as to what constitutes an assault weapon, in and of itself a term purely of arbitrary political manufacture) – have existed in the United States and its preceding colonies well before the drafters of the Constitution even bore the thought to bring quill to parchment.

The controversial gun registration ordinance recently passed by the Missoula City Council is now before the Montana Attorney General for review.

Department of Justice spokesman John Barnes Speaker of the Montana House Austin Knudsen has presented a request for Attorney General Fox. He said there is a specific process for the attorney general to consider such a matter.

“We did receive speaker Knudsen’s request on Monday,” Barnes said. “Since Monday was a state holiday, it didn’t get to his office until Tuesday. The letter came with a legal memorandum which is supposed to accompany such a request, so that memorandum and request are currently under review.”

SAF Skeptical Of New 'Study' Saying More Kids Dying In Gun Mishaps

A reported new study by two news agencies that asserts more children are dying in gun-related accidents than are actually reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be approached with caution, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

"Forgive our skepticism, but a study that is greeted by a CDC official who acknowledges that his own agency's data might be unreliable gives us considerable pause," said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. "Add to that the fact that the study reportedly relied on data from the Gun Violence Archive, a group whose title hardly instills a sense of impartiality, is bothersome as well. We call upon this non-profit to disclose its funding sources.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion. — James Burgh, Political Disquisitions: Or, an Enquiry into Public Errors, Defects, and Abuses [London, 1774-1775].
