“Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.” Shakespeare, from the play Julius Caesar Most of the time we keep it pretty light here at this little weekly clam bake. I try to inform you about something in the hunting, fishing, and outdoor world and maybe even entertain you a bit; and on a good day you may even be forced to chuckle! But sometimes I feel it is my duty as your somewhat humble outdoor scribe to let you know when everything is not all sun shine and roses in the outdoor world. My brothers and sisters in camo are you awake? It doesn’t seem like it.

Waterfowl hunters are reminded that they are prohibited from shooting ducks and geese from the shores surrounding Lake Champlain, following recent reports to Burlington police. "It's unlawful and it unnerves people in nearby homes, who don't have the assurance that someone is always aiming over the water," Burlington police wrote in a Twitter post on Saturday.

Hunters help keep deer populations in line with population goals across the state, and wildlife managers report good opportunities to harvest deer. But they also caution hunters that scouting could be more important this year due to wet access and habitat conditions over the spring and summer.

Eight people were killed and at least 20 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago this weekend, including five people killed by a neighbor in a Dunning condo on the Northwest Side. The shooting rampage began about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the 67-year-old gunman went into his next-door neighbor’s unit on the second floor of the building in the 6700 block of West Irving Park Road in the Dunning neighborhood and fatally shot what Chicago police described as a family of three men and one woman eating supper.

A new study ranks South Dakota No. 3 for retail gun sales per person in America in 2018. There were 129.9 sales per 100,000 people last year, marking a 23.8% increase since 2009. Despite being in-between mass shootings, guns remain among the most divisive issues in American culture and much of it is geographical. |

Saying its top priority is the safety and well-being of customers, Cub Foods is asking shoppers not to carry firearms in its stores openly. The announcement was made Saturday on the retailer’s Twitter account:
“While Minnesota is an open-carry state that allows individuals with lawful permits to carry firearms, we also respect the concerns and feedback shared by many of our customers following the recent tragic events throughout our country. Therefore, we’re respectfully asking our customers, other than authorized law enforcement officials, to no longer openly carry firearms into or stores.”

Several years ago, down in Colorado, I was prone behind one of my long-range competition guns, the scope's crosshairs steady on the ribcage of an antelope feeding on a sage-covered hill nearly 500 yards away. This better work, I thought. Before that moment, I’d had a pretty fixed notion of what made a proper big-game bullet. Whether I was chasing Coues deer in Mexico, bears in Alaska, plains game in Africa, or whitetails in the Midwest, I wanted my bullets to more or less behave the same. That is, to punch through hide and bone, mushroom on contact, and retain the majority of their weight as they penetrated.

The Buckeye Firearms Association is raffling off an AR-15, along with a special trigger and ammo, ahead of the 12 Democratic candidates taking the debate stage in Westerville. The group's Dean Rieck says this is in response to the candidates' stances on gun regulation, in particular Beto O'Rourke who said in the last debate, "Hell yes we're gonna take your AR-15s."

A University of Virginia student and a young woman from Albemarle County are taking a stand against a gun law lawmakers enacted years ago. They want to see the age limit lowered for handgun purchases, but their reasoning may surprise you. UVA fourth-year Tanner Hirschfield and 19-year-old Natalia Marshall of Albemarle County are not letting a decision from a federal judge in Charlottesville stop their fight. They argue a law that limits their ability to purchase handguns is flawed, discriminatory, and encourages unsafe behavior. |

The New York Times has done what may be an unintentional favor for Second Amendment activists by detailing the gun control positions of Democrat candidates now running to become the next president, and it might serve as a proverbial wake-up call to lethargic gun owners as the 2020 campaign season looms large on the horizon.
Noting that “the political terrain on guns has been shifting for several years in response to a seemingly unending series of mass shootings and a newly emboldened network of advocacy groups,” the article is blunt: “proposals that were politically untouchable are now firmly on the table.” |

In July of 2007, I wrote an article for Shooting Illustrated's print magazine titled “Bullet Behavior Classified.” The focus of the article was how to classify rifle-hunting bullets based on performance. I devised this bullet-behavior-classification (BBC) system to help hunters better select bullets based on real-world—not advertised—terminal performance. The formula to establish bullet behavior was relatively simple, but required a bullet that had been fired into a test medium or an animal. What this formula revealed was if a bullet delivered fragmenting, balanced or penetrating performance. |

Given America’s history with slavery, black people should be the biggest advocates for the Second Amendment. Guns equal freedom! Despite the mantra from the left, there’s no such thing as an “assault rifle.” It’s a term they invented to make guns sound scary, and it works. I prefer to call semi-automatic rifles, such as the AR-15 by their proper names: “anti-dictator rifles,” “self-defense rifles” and sporting rifles. |

Although Norma Ammunition hasn't enjoyed quite as much name recognition in the United States as some ammunition brands, the company has been building a worldwide reputation with a broad range of high-quality cartridges including pistol, rifle and rimfire offerings. While they began making ammunition in Oslo, Norway in 1895, Norma wasn’t established until 1902 after the Enger brothers moved their operation across the border into Ĺmotfors, Sweden. Today, Norma's parent company, the Swiss technology company RUAG Ammotec, produces more than 30 million rounds each year in more than 100 different calibers for rifle, pistol and rimfire platforms. |

The Supreme Court kicked off its 2019-2020 term last week, and one of the cases it is taking has huge implications for Second Amendment supporters. The implications are also being recognized by those who seek to strip our rights away. That case is New York State Rifle and Pistol Association vs. City of New York, New York. It should be noted that the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association is the state affiliate of the National Rifle Association. |
