People will not be allowed to openly carry firearms at polling places, clerks offices or locations where absentee ballots are counted, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced Friday. .

Benson included the decision in guidance sent to Michigan clerks as elections officials prepare for any voter intimidation efforts on Election Day, Nov. 3.

“I am committed to ensuring all eligible Michigan citizens can freely exercise their fundamental right to vote without fear of threats, intimidation or harassment. Prohibiting the open-carry of firearms in areas where citizens cast their ballots is necessary to ensure every voter is protected.”

Can voters carry a gun to the polls in Pennsylvania?

In most cases, the answer is yes.

Many polling places in Pennsylvania are in municipal buildings, schools, houses of worship or community centers. Weapons normally are otherwise prohibited in schools, but a recent court case led to charges being dismissed against an adult.

While six states — Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas — have laws that generally prohibit guns at polling places, Pennsylvania has none, according to a report by two gun violence prevention advocacy organizations, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and Guns Down America.

The framers of the Constitution didn’t worry about ‘originalism’

Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a self-avowed originalist and textualist. Like most conservative jurists, she praises these modes of constitutional interpretation as effective constraints on judicial discretion. Adherents of these methods hold that they will interpret the Constitution as its original adopters understood it. They will not allow judges to make up new rights, even in response to their personal moral commitments. The text governs all, and those who interpret it must be faithful to the usage of past decades, not contemporary concerns.

Gun buyback events in Providence and Central Falls will go on Saturday after a judge denied an injunction to stop them.

The Second Amendment Coalition requested to stop the buybacks, saying criminals were getting a clean slate because the guns weren't going to be tested for connections to crimes.

The Second Amendment Strikes Back

In some respects, 2020 has been a disappointing year for the Second Amendment. The Supreme Court continued its decade-long silence on this important constitutional right, and gun control legislation remains a potent rallying cry for many local, state, and national lawmakers. And yet, 2020 is nevertheless poised to be a year of Second Amendment resurgence. Nationwide protests, violent crime spikes in major cities, and calls to defund or abolish police departments have led to record-breaking numbers of gun sales. Nearly 40% of new sales during the first half of the year were by first-time buyers, with an estimated 2.5 million Americans joining the ranks of gun owners between January and June.

SCOTUS hearings: What Judge Barrett’s addition to Supreme Court could mean

In District of Columbia v. Heller, the late Justice Antonin Scalia, a mentor of Judge Barrett, led the court’s decision preventing governments from issuing broad handgun bans or requirements that guns be kept unloaded and disassembled at home. During her Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Judge Barrett declined to provide detailed information on her views of gun control despite direct questioning. In her dissent in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals case, Kanter v. Barr, however, Judge Barrett opined that states cannot restrict all felons from possessing guns, suggesting only dangerous felons can be deprived of their Second Amendment rights.

AZ: Mark Kelly says he supports the Second Amendment. But actions speak louder than words

“I probably own more firearms than your average Arizonan," he told another interviewer.

But Kelly’s actions show disdain for gun rights. The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which Kelly co-founded, endorsed California as the best model for gun laws while giving Arizona an F.

Californians fleeing their state might vote for the same failed policies in their new home of Arizona. If so, Mark Kelly is their guy. Arizonans who view the basket case to our West as a cautionary tale need to think twice.

“Joe Biden openly admitted his plan to violate our Second Amendment rights,” the ad’s narrator says about the Democratic presidential nominee. The ad then shows CNN’s Anderson Cooper saying to Biden: “To gun owners out there who say, well, a Biden administration means they’re going to come for my guns.” After that, Biden is shown saying, “Bingo. You’re right.”

But his full response was: “Bingo. You’re right, if you have an assault weapon. The fact of the matter is they should be illegal, period.”

North Carolina Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis supports the Second Amendment, and it has never been in doubt. When he first ran for state office and supporters questioned his staunch position on the right to keep and bear arms, he didn’t blink.

“When I ended up getting into the statehouse, and I made it very clear that we were going to support the Second Amendment, I had people coming to me saying, ‘Thom, why are you doing these additional protections for Second Amendment rights?’ And I said…I believe the people of North Carolina revere our Second Amendment, and they’ll support us.”

An outspoken supporter for firearms offered sharp criticism of a directive from Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson that bans openly carrying firearms at polling locations on Nov. 3.

Republican State Rep. Beau LaFave of Iron Mountain said he expects a lawsuit will be filed against Benson to overturn the directive. He accused Benson of “fearmongering to suppress voters” and prevent people from exercising their Second Amendment rights.

Almost like clockwork, another ostensibly pro-gun organization has appeared on the landscape just in time for a national election in which the gun vote will be critical, and this one was launched by the Giffords gun control organization, and according to The Hill, “It seeks to offer gun owners an alternative to the NRA, which remains stringently opposed to most anti-gun violence proposals.”

This new outfit is called Gun Owners for Safety (GOS), launched Friday. By no small coincidence, it already reportedly has chapters in key swing states, including Texas, Colorado and Minnesota, and claims to be building chapters in Michigan, Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

A 34-year-old man is dead following a shooting at an Akron liquor store Friday evening, and authorities are still trying to piece together what happened.

Preliminary information indicates a 38-year-old man had arrived in a Nissan and was later leaving the Country Market on East South Street when he got into an altercation with the victim. The 34-year-old then drew a gun and shot the 38-year-old in the hand, and apparently the 26-year-old driver of the Nissan then exchanged gunfire with the 34-year-old and shot him before fleeing the scene.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee began hearings Monday on the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, much of the attention focused on whether the committee should even be considering her at this late date, with so many Americans already casting ballots in elections that could shift control of the White House and Congress. There was widespread interest, too, in how Barrett would handle issues already before the court or potentially soon to be there, including challenges to the Affordable Care Act and the results of the November elections.

Browning Buck Mark Plus Vision Blue Review

My son is a rather jaded firearms enthusiast. At three (almost four, he’ll tell you) he’s seen many guns pass back and forth between my office and the gun safe in our house. Exhibition-grade walnut does nothing for him, and he has no appreciation for the classics. The very Colt that Wyatt Earp carried into the famous dustup at the OK Corral could pass under his nose without a second glance. But when I walked by him with Browning’s new Limited Edition Buck Mark Plus Vision pistol in blue, the kid almost fell off his chair.

“Dad, what is that?”

The Hawaiian shirt-wearing, gun-toting activists known as Boogbois have migrated out of memespace and into the streets, showing up at Black Lives Matter demonstrations in many American cities—often in apparent sympathy with the cause.

The media have called them white nationalists and accelerationist terrorists. "The boogaloo movement is (for the most part) a libertarian group," according to one member.

But these labels don't capture what this dispersed movement is all about.

Female gun ownership is on the rise. And while guns have almost exclusively been marketed to men over the centuries, that’s all changing.

Many guns today are being manufactured with women in mind. They’re now being designed to have less recoil and be slimmer and lighter.

Many women choose to own a gun for self-defense purposes. And now that gender roles are becoming more balanced. Women are also being seen as the protector of their households.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The supposed quietude of a good mans allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside...Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them... — Thomas Paine, I Writings of Thomas Paine at 56 (1894).
