A judge on Friday dismissed a wrongful-death lawsuit by Newtown families against the maker of the rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre, citing an embattled federal law that shields gun manufacturers from most lawsuits over criminal use of their products.
State Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis granted a motion by Remington Arms to strike the lawsuit by the families of nine children and adults killed and a teacher who survived the Dec. 14, 2012, school attack, in which a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six educators with a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle made by Remington. |

Pedals the Bear has been killed, with the beloved New Jersey bear famous for walking on two legs falling victim to what some say was a vengeful hunter. The black bear had gained fame first in the northern New Jersey community and then across the country for its almost cartoon-like manner, walking upright in what the New York Times described as a “Hanna-Barbera cartoon come to life.” For the past two years, residents of Rockaway Township have been sharing videos of the bear walking through backyards, with its injured front paws pulled close to its chest, the report noted. |

Mark Kelly, the astronaut married to former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, told a small group of people in Orlando recently how he often uses Florida as an illustration of terrible gun laws. "As I travel around the country, I hate to say this, but Florida is an example of some uninformed and bad laws," Kelly said, pointing specifically to a state rule that bans pediatricians from asking parents whether they properly lock up their firearms. |

Just how messed up are American gun laws? If you live in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, Amazon won’t ship you the toy gun you see on the left. But you know what Amazon can ship you? The rifle scope that’s pictured on the right. Conservative news orgs like the Daily Caller and Fox News are currently reporting on Chicago’s toy gun ban and the fact that Amazon won’t ship toy guns to the Windy City as though it’s a new thing. But it’s not. There are a host of cities and states that have passed laws over the years making it illegal to sell toy guns that don’t have a large orange stripe on the barrel. New York City has banned realistic-looking toy guns since 1955.

Joe Leal says he knows the good ones from the bad. He’s been doing this for decades. He trusts that his brown eyes — narrowed beneath a furrowed brow — won’t deceive him. He looks down at the shiny silver handgun under a glass case. Next to it is an all-black one. Criminals don’t want guns like this, he explains. They’re expensive and only the serious enthusiast will lay down more than $2,000 for such a weapon. Even his lower-end guns fetch at least $600.

The candidate trying to unseat Sen. Patty Murray says a total rifle ban will not happen. Chris Vance, former chairman of the Washington State Republican Party, says banning semi-automatic rifles would be unconstitutional. “Republicans and Democrats need to work together to find a compromise on guns,” Vance said during the first debate with Murray on Sunday. “I’ll work with Republicans and Democrats to strengthen background check system. That is legislation that will actually pass. A ban on rifles is not going to pass.” |

Finally, it looks like someone is standing up to the biggest bully around, the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature. As well as its sidekick and enforcer, the gun lobby. Last session, Senate President Andy Biggs pushed through Senate Bill 1487, which would deny state-shared revenue to local governments that violate state law or the constitution. It also empowers any lawmaker who thinks that may have happened to ask for an investigation by Arizona’s attorney general.

The old “which would you pick ... ?” game is a time-honored diversion among gun folk. I’m talking about the “if you were in (insert era) would you rather have a (insert weapon one) or the model XYZ?” I’ve played this game regularly over the years and it has sparked great debates and found flaws real or imagined in many a classic arm. A perfect example of this is the World War I perennial: The armorer offers you a Colt Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 or a Smith & Wesson United States Revolver, Caliber .45, M1917. What do you choose?

New Jersey’s first expanded black bear hunt in more than three decades ended Saturday, just days after lawmakers advanced a measure that would remove the animals from a list of game species. Hunters killed 549 bears during the six-day hunt, officials announced late Saturday. However, they said that number could increase slightly on Sunday because some hunters may not have been able to bring their bears to the check-in stations before they closed Saturday night.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787) |
