On the night before Barack Obama’s inauguration in January 2013, hundreds of Vermonters gathered at a festive reception where Vermont food products and liquor flowed freely. One of the guests noticed two young men looking on from the edge of the crowd who didn’t seem part of the Vermont scene. |

The media and your social media feed seems convincing: America is awash in unprecedented, senseless gun violence. But did you know that the rate of reported gun homicides in the U.S. has actually plummeted by about half since 1993? Pew Research Center analysis of government data shows the number of firearm homicide deaths in the U.S. has steadily fallen from a rate of seven deaths per 100,000 in 1993 to a rate of 3.6 in 2010.
While the total number of gun owners is disputed, the number of Americans legally carrying concealed weapons has soared over the past decade. |

Strapped with pistols and AR-15 rifles, at least four men walked through Grand Rapids' Southeast Side Saturday in an effort to promote and "educate" the public on openly carrying guns in public.
One man, who declined to give his name, said if the public sees "somebody walking with a gun, despite everything the media says, there's nothing bad happening." The three other men also declined to give their names, saying they feared "retaliation."
A Grand Rapids police lieutenant said 911 dispatchers received at least one call about the gun-toting men. Officers responded to check out the report, then briefly talked to the men and found no violations.

Annie Martin’s first-grade daughter came home from school frightened and confused by a new class drill.
“It was almost immediately after the Sandy Hook shootings," Martin said, referring to the 2012 mass murder of 20 children and six staff members in Newtown, Conn. "She came home and said, 'Mom we locked ourselves in a closet today because a bad man can come into the school with guns."
Martin praised the teachers at Ferndale's John F. Kennedy Elementary School for their gentle efforts to prepare the students for something that felt inevitable in an environment where guns almost seem unregulated. But with Charley Martin, her mother said, the drill instilled massive fear.

News flash for D. Watkins, author of "The Beast Side: Living and Dying While Black in America" and columnist at Salon.com: Chris Rock is a comedian. True, he practices the style of comedy known as observational humor, but his goal is nevertheless to make people laugh.
So when Rock observed during a stand-up routine, "We don’t need gun control. We need bullet control – if bullets were $5000, people would think before they shot someone!" Watkins, who was in the audience, understood it was meant to be funny. He even reveals in his retelling of the joke in the lead-in to an article at Salon that he and "some friends ... erupted in laughter." |

At first glance, the Enouy revolver seems to be some kind of steampunk weapon with lots of imagination and little practical use. But this is a real firearm from the past, with an interesting history. The innovative revolver was patented by Joseph Enouy of Middlesex, England in 1855. A compound magazine wheel with eight different cylinders spun on a rod attached to the butt and a bracket from the underside of the revolver barrel. |

Lawmakers want to loosen rules for service members to carry weapons at stateside bases for personal protection, but their efforts appear unlikely to put more guns into troops’ hands.
In the wake of the July mass shooting that killed five service members in Chattanooga, Tennessee, negotiators working on the fiscal 2016 defense authorization bill included language to give military installation commanders more leeway over who can carry “an appropriate firearm,” including some personal weapons.

Some gun owners are antagonistic towards the Obama Administration. I’d say gun owners have good cause.
President Obama recently said he’d issue executive orders after the last public murder in Oregon. He said the same thing after the murders in Sandyhook, Connecticut. I read his 23 point executive orders to see how our rights will be abused by a corrupt Chicago politician.
The Obama administration lied to the American people again and again as Obama weaponized every aspect of government to suit his political ends. I see the same thing happening to gun owners. Here is what Obama said.
What do you think he'll do next?

Detroit police say a pastor shot and killed a man who threatened him inside a small Detroit church on Sunday afternoon.
According to Detroit Police Assistant Chief Steve Dolnut, it happened in the 22000 block of Grand River on the city's west side around 1:45 p.m.
Dolnut said the man walked inside the church with a brick, and threatened the pastor. That's when the pastor pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting the man. He was taken to the hospital where he later died, according to police.
According to Dolnut, there had been previous disputes between the pastor and the man.
Right now, police are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call police. |

Consider the following excerpts that have appeared on the Daily News-Miner’s opinion pages in recent years: “The recent strengthening of gun rights in Alaska and across the nation is a logical, long-overdue reaction to the criminal threats that normal people face every day. It also respects this nation’s revered principle that the average person’s freedom to live as he or she pleases should not be restricted without cause. |

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has never had a firm grasp on the English language, as evidenced by the repudiation of their bizarre interpretation of the Second Amendment at the U.S. Supreme Court. However, this week, in an attempt to demonize NRA, Brady Campaign took their hyperbole to a new low, referring to the NRA as “terrorists.” That’s right; according to the Brady Campaign, the grassroots organization comprised of 5 million freedom-loving members that are dedicated to using the democratic process and legal framework to defend the constitutional rights of all Americans are “terrorists.” |

An informal sampling of University of Wisconsin-Platteville students showed the vast majority would be OK with allowing concealed weapons in university buildings. "If there's proper training required to have a conceal-carry permit, and a person knows how to handle a firearm properly, I believe there is no issue of having a gun inside a building," said Jonathan Nosko, a senior from Owen. |

Of course. It makes perfect sense. Why couldn’t I see it before?
There could never have been a Holocaust had the Jews been armed. Granted, the Nazis swept aside the armies of Poland and France like dandruff, and it took six years for Great Britain — later joined by Russia and the United States — to grind them down. But surely Jewish civilians with revolvers and hunting rifles would have made all the difference. |

Anyone see the movie Firestarter? The feds walk up to Irv Manders’ (Art Carney) porch to take a child with telekinetic powers. “We don’t need a warrant,” the lead agent tells “Charlie’s” family. “You do unless I woke up in Russia this morning,” Manders replies, aiming a scoped rifle at the government agents. The reason I mention this: reading anti-gun agitprop, I sometime get the feeling that yes, I did wake up in Russia this morning. |

As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. — Tench Coxe in `Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution' under the Pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian" in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789 at 2 col. 1. |
