Upland bird hunting seasons are a time-honored tradition for many states. To hike the fields after our favorite game birds is to practice a custom done for generations, that ebbs and flows with the status of wild bird populations that, in many ways, represent their habitat as sustainable or not.

On Sunday, Sept. 17, 1944, the British 1st Airborne Division came down on a series of parachute-drop zones and glider-landing zones 8 miles west of Arnhem in the Netherlands. The division’s mission was to infiltrate into the center of the city and capture the bridge spanning the Nederrijn located there. A critical component of the plan for Operation Market Garden, the 1st Airborne Division would have to seize and hold the bridge long enough for the ground echelon approaching from the south to reach it.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau had mayors from the Greater Toronto Area on hand Tuesday as he touted his party's vow to crack down on firearms — but all those assembled suggested the federal government should go further and promise a handgun ban. After Trudeau delivered a speech extolling the virtues of banning semi-automatic "assault" rifles as a means to reduce gun-related crime, a reporter asked all the mayors — including leaders from major suburbs like Mississauga and Markham — to raise their hands if they'd support a national ban on handguns. They all did.

Last year was a very good year for those of us in Illinois who believe that reasonable gun regulation must be an integral part of any solution to the epidemic of gun violence that has plagued us both nationally and locally over the last two decades. In 2018, Illinois was finally able to enact two important pieces of gun legislation that have the potential to significantly reduce gun violence in a number of different ways.

Few things are as synonymous with each other as the name “Marlin” and lever-action rifle. Drawing closer and closer to its landmark 150th birthday, Marlin Firearms remains one of the preeminent lever-gun manufacturers in the industry—and only recently announced the new Marlin Dark Series. Though a “tactical” lever-action might not necessarily be everyone’s cup of tea, Marlin’s version arrived with a splash, and reminded everyone that the world’s most iconic lever-gun company is still very much here.

October 1st marks the beginning of hunting season and before we head out, there is a lot of ground to cover. We met with Iowa DNR officer Jeff Harrison to go over the rules and regulations to make sure we start the hunting season off on the right foot. With the archery season opener, you'll want to make sure you have your hunting license, habitat fee, and deer license. You can get all of these at either local, big box stores or online. However, if you do choose to go online, remember it will take 5-7 days to get it mailed out. If you hope to hunt prior to that, you'll want to pick these up in store.

Hunters and other outdoors enthusiasts heading into Pennsylvania’s state-owned woodlands this autumn will find additional roads open in 18 of the 20 state forest districts, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said. “This improved accessibility, coupled with our promotion of deer hunting, benefits forest regeneration and the overall ecosystem,” DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said. “As a result, DCNR is opening 516 miles of state forest roads normally open only for administrative use. They again will be available to hunters, hikers, foliage viewers, and others visiting state forestlands this fall.”

Tucked inside a narrow wedge of a traditional open-air market is one of Mexico’s most dangerous black market operations. It’s known as the Tepito. It’s a barrio where even the police mostly remain outside. Inside, it’s under the tightly controlled thumb of the Union de Tepito, otherwise known as the Union Cartel – one of the capital city’s most violent and well-financed criminal players. Cartel “hawks” – often children – are positioned in the entry to report on any unusual visitors inside the tented tunnel. Those inside worship the Mexican folklore legend Jesús Malverde, who steals from the rich to give to the poor. He’s the narco saint, the so-called patron saint of drug traffickers, the perceived “angel of the poor.”

It has been two years since a gunman opened fire on a crowd of concert-goers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, killing 58 people. In part, the incident led to gun legislation during the 2019 legislative session. SB143 was one of the first bills Governor Steve Sisolak signed into law. It will require background checks on all gun sales starting in January, including private party sales. "Background checks do save lives," Will Pregman, Communications Director for Battle Born Progress said. "There are many background checks that get rejected just from the current system when people trying to buy a gun and have committed violent crimes."

New data from the Washington Department of Licensing released Tuesday shows the state has added more than 2,000 more active concealed pistol licenses in the past month.

Meanwhile, Arizona—which copied Washington’s state constitutional right-to-bear-arms provision verbatim when it achieved statehood in 1912—has added nearly 1,300 carry permits since mid-August. Arizona is a “constitutional carry” state where no permit is required to carry firearms openly or concealed, but 347,153 state residents have them, anyway for reciprocity purposes.

Starting Tuesday, a controversial law will allow some teachers in Florida to carry guns inside the classroom. The bill was initially passed in response to the Parkland school shooting last year where 17 students and staff were killed. We may never have an exact number of how many teachers will carry weapons because they're supposed to remain anonymous for their safety. School districts are allowed to opt out of arming teachers, and two of the state's largest school districts including Miami-Dade and Orlando have elected to do so, but a handful of smaller school districts are all in.
