The fight over gun shows in California is a microcosm of the 2A battles raging across the country: Aggressive anti-gun legislature passes law attacking “gun culture”, trampling willy-nilly on fundamental rights using spurious claims about protecting public safety. Lawful gun owners sue and a “progressive” court skips right around well-established legal standards to whisk away the challenge. |

The 2024 Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) was held in San Diego, California. The location was not a universally popular choice. California has a deserved reputation as one of the few states that have enacted extremely restrictive legislation against firearms ownership and use. The restrictions make it difficult for law-abiding people to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

During his three terms in the Illinois General Assembly, state Rep. Bob Morgan, D-Deerfield, said shepherding a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines through the legislature is the most significant thing he has accomplished in his three terms in office. “It is by far the most meaningful legislation I will ever be part of,” Morgan said of the law he championed in the wake of the 2022 Highland Park Fourth of July parade mass shooting. “There is still more work to do.”

ATF declares that its Final Rule at issue before the Supreme Court in Garland v. VanDerStok "will enhance public safety by helping to ensure that more firearms may be traced by law enforcement to solve crime and arrest the perpetrators." Radically expanding the definition of "firearm" from what Congress enacted is allegedly justified by the policy argument that the agency will be able to "trace" more firearms. Whether that will solve more crimes is a big "if."
