The two major party candidates in Virginia's race for governor sharply disagree when it comes to guns. Republican Ed Gillespie has an A rating from the National Rifle Association. He pledged to "oppose any and all attempts to weaken the Second Amendment." Democrat Ralph Northam said he favors stricter controls on gun ownership. He's backed by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's group as well as by former Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was grievously wounded in a 2011 shooting. |

For nearly all of my life, I have been fascinated by the human psyche. In particular, how numerous activities require or employ similar thought processes in order to be successful. After several decades as a flight instructor and hunter education volunteer, patterns have emerged that re-enforce some of my long held beliefs. |

If I didn’t know any better, I would suspect “kimmel” meant “ignorant” in German. Jimmy Kimmel’s recent anti-gun tirades during his late-night television program showed the world how embarrassingly little he knows about modern self-defense principles, the U.S. Constitution, American history, politics and just about every other subject he broached while obviously impaired by emotion. The outbursts also showed how hateful he is capable of being. |

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced that a coalition of 13 Attorneys General filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit to uphold a California ban on the possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines for guns. The brief urges the court to overturn a lower court’s order preliminarily enjoining the law, and argues that nothing about the Second Amendment, under Supreme Court precedent, prevents states and the District of Columbia from enacting reasonable gun regulations. |

I've had the opportunity to talk to lots of folks who are eager to assemble their first concealed-carry rig. They've taken the plunge, obtained a concealed-carry permit and now they're ready to buy their first compact pistol. Then the sticker shock hits. While their enthusiasm may not be quenched, it can certainly be curbed as the price of a new gun, holsters, magazines, ammunition and range time all start to add up. |

Actress and gun control activist Julianne Moore endorsed limiting the number of firearms U.S. citizens can own during an appearance Thursday on "The View." Host Whoopi Goldberg pointed out Moore is part of "Everytown for Gun Safety," and that the group wasn't about gun control but rather about safety. "People like to talk about it as if it's a Second Amendment issue. It's a safety issue. A gun is a machine," Moore said. |

States that have more relaxed criteria for allowing residents to carry concealed handguns have a higher rate of gun deaths than states with stricter requirements, according to a study released Thursday. Researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health found that states that have so-called “may issue” laws — which give law enforcement officials wide discretion to decide who can receive a concealed carry permit — have lower gun death rates than states that call for little discretion once basic criteria for obtaining the permit is met, also known as “shall issue” laws. |

What do you do when your gun-ban group becomes so persistent in pushing restrictive laws for law-abiding gun owners that more and more people begin to realize where you really stand on gun ownership? For Gabby Giffords’ group, so-called Americans For Responsible Solutions, the answer is to change your name to further hide your goals. |

An NRA-backed insurance policy to cover shooters who act in self-defense is being slammed as "murder insurance" for people too quick on the trigger.
The new insurance, which the gun lobby is calling “Carry Guard,” covers civil and criminal costs associated with self-defense shootings — and would cover people like George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin in 2012, drawing attention to state Stand Your Ground laws. |

In Brad Anderson’s “The Machinist”, the insomnia-ridden protagonist experiences a series of increasingly violent paranoid delusions. At the end of the film, we learn that his pitiable state is the result of a crime he himself had committed a year before. He attempts to repress his guilt by externalizing it, subconsciously projecting it onto hallucinations, which in turn, come to haunt him until he must face himself in horrible lucidity. |
