"There is only one question, really. Who is he? Once we answer that one, the police can arrest him or, if necessary, kill him."

"But we don't know."

"We know so much else. We know the grief he's caused, the holes he's shot in 10 families and in our society. We know the fear that he brings as his dark claim to our attention. We know he is that most loathsome thing, a man who has himself confused with God and has taken on God's entitlements. We know his particularly profane blend of intimacy and distance: He can study us through his optics, look at the light in our eyes, the shape of our lips, the uncertainty of our hairlines, the eagerness in our young bodies. Then he safely presses a trigger from a long way out and takes all that away." ...

"Gun DNA" does not deserve politicizing

"The mixed signals sent by the Bush administration regarding a national ballistic fingerprint system shows how contentious, and political, an issue it is."

"It shouldn't be. Even as a sniper widens a hold of terror on the Maryland-Virginia area, the focus, and debate, should be not on preserving gun rights but expanding law enforcement's crime-fighting tools and strategies. And most of all, catching the killer or killers, and deterring future murders of Americans."

THAT SETTLES IT THEN...

If the objective is fighting crime, "ballistic fingerprinting" is a waste of money. Anyone who objectively studies the full range of issues involved knows that.

This Italian report on various slaying in the nation concludes with the following statement:

"Despite thousands of years of civilisation, it seems Italy is no better than the USA when it comes to family violence, and the social surroundings of these mass murders are remarkably similar to the small-town massacres associated with middle America. 'If violence is as American as apple pie,' wrote the newspaper Corriere Della Sera in a recent editorial, 'it is also as Italian as spaghetti.' "

"Ripped from a sound sleep, snuggled beside his older brother, 7-year-old Antoine Perez screamed, 'Mommy, someone hit me!' "

"That someone turned out to be a stray bullet fired at 2:09 a.m. Saturday by a Buffalo police officer who, authorities said, was defending himself against a man pointing a loaded handgun at him."

"...the man police shot at and missed was convicted in a 1999 shooting and was shot himself about a year ago in a bar next to her house, but he had refused to press charges."

CONSIDER...

If an innocent citizen uses a firearm in self-defense and hits a bystander (or, in this case, a bysleeper), he or she is liable for damages. Will the officer or the department be liable for damages?

We Americans have heard of "constitutional rights". Nearly all of us - including Supreme Court justices - have often used the phrase but it has been used with little understanding of "natural or unalienable rights". No man or woman born of American Citizens in one of the 50 states - a Citizen of the United States of America - has "constitutional rights". Such would mean that rights were granted by a document written by men that, in turn, would mean men are granting other men "rights".

Not in Australia of all places! I thought those things were banned. Good thing the victims were defenseless. We can't have innocent individuals taking the law into their own hands and defending their own lives, that’s what police are for.

Now seriously, lets pray for the family and victims. These people didn't deserve this. It could have happened anywhere, gun ban or no. I just wish the anti's could understand that fact; instead they dance on the graves of the dead.

"KHARTOUM, 21 October — Adel Nasir Faraj, the man who tried to hijack a Saudi Arabian Airlines plane last week, received help from a Khartoum airport officer to smuggle the gun on board the flight, Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported. The paper said a video clip showed Muhammad Abdullah, the security officer, receiving the gun from Faraj before security check and then handing it over to him at the plane’s gate. The criminal court, where the case is being heard, has decided to examine the video clip that showed that Abdullah and Faraj had been moving together since Faraj’s entry into the airport terminal. Faraj has admitted bribing the officer to smuggle the gun onto the plane. Lawyers defending the Sudanese suspect claimed that their client was not aware of the Saudi man’s intention to hijack the plane. Faraj tried to hijack Saudia Flight 450 soon after it took off from Khartoum Airport on Oct. 15 on its way to Jeddah. Security officers on board the plane overpowered Faraj and foiled the hijack attempt."
