The first round of shots were fired Thursday afternoon at the brand new pistol and rifle shooting range in St. Martin Parish. The opening ceremony marked the culmination of a process that began late in the summer of 2013. That’s when the parish’s Sheriff’s Office began looking for property to begin building a range and training center. For over a decade, said Major Ginny Higgins, Public Information Officer for the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office, officers have had to travel to Iberia Parish to test and train with firearms. |

To understand why it’s so hard to stop the flow of guns across state lines to cities like Chicago, you have to start with a simple fact: Firearms are legal. As the Supreme Court has ruled repeatedly, most American adults are allowed to have them. That means millions of people can acquire guns legally — and are potential sources of guns that might later be stolen or illegally sold, traded or loaned. |

The question dominating news today is whether gun control works, and if not, why not. To address this dilemma it’s first necessary to examine its premise and define terms. Gun control is premised on the notion that people commit violent crimes because of the existence of firearms, and because people have access to them. Some assume that limiting both will significantly reduce violent crime. Both the premise and assumption are badly flawed. |

Rep. Erik Paulsen, who usually votes against additional restrictions on the sale of firearms, is drawing criticism from Minnesota gun control opponents by co-sponsoring legislation to ban a device that allows semi-automatic rifles to fire at the rate of machine guns. mPaulsen, a Republican, has added his name to a proposal in Congress to ban the sale, manufacture and use of the devices known as bump stocks. The gunman in the deadly Las Vegas shooting this month used bump stocks as he fired on a crowd near Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 58 and injuring hundreds more in the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history. |

Getting shot didn’t initially stop a South Carolina man from making more trouble, but it eventually did. The agitator’s spree started in Lexington, S.C., when he threatened people with a pressure washer. One of the would-be victims was having none of that, so he responded by shooting the mischief-maker in the chest. The rabble-rouser fled after being wounded, intent on making a getaway before the people he had allegedly threatened called the police. As the bad guy staggered down the street, passersby in a pickup truck stopped to see if he needed help. The assailant showed his gratitude by reportedly punching a female passenger in the face and dragging her out of the truck.

Polling data released this year continues to suggest America’s Millennials aren’t behaving. Millennials—the term used to describe those born between 1980 and 2000—poll more progressive on party affiliation, and on issues such as same-sex marriage, recreational drug use and even socialism. They also voted more heavily for Democrat presidential candidates than Republicans in the past three elections. |

Remember the Grateful Dead? I was never a fan of their music, in fact, when I went to Simsbury High School in 1978-1980 I almost got my ass kicked a few times by a couple of die-hard Dead fans for letting on that I hated the band. (There were lots of Jerry Garcia fans there at the time) |

If your dream of owning a stun gun has been thwarted by the state’s decades-long ban, you’re in luck: Thanks to a U.S. Supreme Court decision, New Jersey residents will soon be free to buy the devices for the first time since 1985. There are a few caveats to the new rules, for which the public comment period ends Sunday. Minors can’t buy a stun gun, nor can felons or the mentally ill. But otherwise, it’s open season. |
