Saturday marked the official opening of Wisconsin pheasant hunting season. Pheasants are one of the most sought-after game birds in North America, and populations do best in the agricultural landscape of southern and Western Wisconsin. In addition to existing wild pheasant hunting opportunities, DNR wildlife management staff plan to release approximately 80,000 pheasants from the state game farm on more than 100 public hunting grounds, slightly more than were released in 2018.

One member of the Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee expects legislation to allow Sunday hunting to reach the House floor for a vote this year. Senate Bill 147, which would expand Sunday hunting to three additional days — one Sunday during the statewide archery season, a second in the statewide firearms season and the third to be chosen by the Pennsylvania Game Commission — passed the Senate earlier this year. It was referred to the House Game and Fisheries Committee on June 27, but the bill might not remain there much longer. |

If Mother Nature chose to blend a combination of adverse weather events to knock down southern Minnesota’s pheasant population, it succeeded. As we all know, last winter seemed to be never-ending, with storm after storm dropping copious amounts of snow on the landscape, usually accompanied by blizzard-force winds and bone-chilling temperatures that dipped far below zero.

The Swiss Industrial Company (SIG) has produced some of the best pistols in the world, but the Swiss neutrality laws make the export of weapons very difficult; as one Swiss said, “We are only allowed to sell guns to people who don’t want them.” As a result, SIG set up a combined operation with the German company of J.P. Sauer & Son, an old-established and well-respected company, so that Sauer can make SIG pistols and sell them into countries where the Swiss cannot. |

In the weeks, then months, and now years after losing the presidential election in 2016, Hillary Clinton has repeatedly demonstrated in speeches and television interviews she has no idea why she lost. She has blamed everything from racism to Russia, from the media to sexism, from deplorables to backwards-looking stubborn nostalgia. Now she’s out saying Trump’s presidency is illegitimate and that she would defeat him again. |

California’s statewide snipe season opens Oct. 19, 2019, and runs through Feb. 2, 2020, offering California hunters both an exceptionally challenging upland game bird hunt and some exceptional table fare. The daily bag limit is eight and the possession limit is triple the bag limit. “They’re real. They’re not just a practical joke,” said Scott Gardner, the senior environmental scientist who leads CDFW’s Upland/Small Game Program, referencing the countless children who have been duped into mythical snipe hunts. |

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s proposed legislation that will prohibitively tax what she calls “excessive lobbying” might miss her intended target in the National Rifle Association. The Democratic presidential candidate has made her crusade against lobbying and big money donors a major part of her campaign narrative, but the donor that she would most like to shut down is the NRA, the Washington Examiner reported Saturday. |

Hammerless revolvers are the ideal carry guns. Unlike the name suggests, these guns do have a hammer. But it's more accurate to say the hammer is concealed within the gun's frame. This gives these firearms an advantage in a small frame that makes them more concealable and less prone to snagging on clothing or your holster. |

Sabot slugs – pronounced “SAY-BO” – are the improved and technologically superior brother of rifled slugs, because they simply offer more accuracy and longer range from a shotgun, typically with a rifled barrel. This type of slug is encased (or otherwise attached) to a wad or bore-sleeve – which basically grips the rifling in the barrel and gives the projectile inside the spin needed to fly smoothly. |

An old strategy of the gun prohibition movement is being identified with a new slang term—“camo-speak”—which translates to substituting terms like “gun safety” and “gun reform” for gun control, and the establishment press appears to have embraced that deceptive vocabulary so completely that it is misleading.

Sheriff Mark Cage of Eddy County, New Mexico, indicates his deputies will not serve in the anti-gun, “personal Gestapo,” Robert “Beto” O’Rourke talks about sending around to confiscate guns. O’Rourke has been clear in his support for a “mandatory,” government-enforced buyback of all AR-15 and AK-47 rifles. And he has been equally clear on his plans to send law enforcement personal to the homes of those who refuse to hand over their rifles. |

Bazooka Joe Biden, who just days ago said AR-15 owners would be better off buying rocket launchers and fighter jets instead of owning modern sporting rifles, released his new gun control plan. It’s worth noting he released his plan just one day before Democratic candidates were scheduled to promote their various gun control notions in front of an approving audience on the national stage that’s being sponsored by – surprise, surprise – the gun control groups Giffords and March for Our Lives. It’s also worth noting the plan doesn’t actually address crime but targets law-abiding gun owners. |

America’s hunters routinely receive the lion’s share of credit for this nation’s very impressive wildlife conservation programs. Which is not surprising, given that hunters pay for licenses and other fees that help fund state game agencies, plus support scores of conservation groups, large and small, working to better wildlife habitat. Often, too, the Pittman-Robertson (P-R) Act of 1937 is discussed as part of what hunters do to support conservation in this country, a federal law that has, admittedly, pumped billions of dollars into the American wildlife conservation equation. |
