Whether you’re a traditionalist at heart with a stable of vintage rifles or are looking for something “new but used” to make this a throwback deer season, here’s a great place to start. These are each time-proven, historic, and wonderfully old-school chamberings and rifles to make this a red wool type of whitetail fall. Spoiler alert: you don’t need anything built of carbon fiber, named Creedmoor, requiring a chassis, or even a fancy riflescope to bag a buck this year. Take a look.

With the new Self-Defense Revolver from Diamondback just 10 months on the market, the Florida-based gunmaker has announced a new model with an understated finish. The .357 Magnum snub-nosed SDR was teased at SHOT Show this year and has been a hit on the market. It is crafted from forged stainless steel and uses a stubby 2-inch barrel with a 45-degree target-crowned muzzle. A six-shot double-action/single-action revolver with an exposed spur hammer, it has low-profile fiber-optic sights and a streamlined push-button cylinder release.

In Texas, a state known for its staunch defense of Second Amendment rights, gun owners and instructors are growing increasingly wary of Vice President Kamala Harris’s strong stance on gun control. Leading the charge is Michael Cargill, a Texas firearms instructor and Army veteran, who recently made headlines by successfully challenging the Trump-era bump stock ban in the Supreme Court. Cargill, along with many like-minded Texans, sees Harris’s record as a direct threat to gun ownership rights, viewing her advocacy for strict regulations as an overreach that undermines their freedoms.

In Buffalo on October 10, U.S. District Judge John Sinatra, Jr. declared unconstitutional a New York law that outlawed bearing arms on private property without the consent of the property owner. Extensively citing recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, Sinatra ruled that the Second Amendment lets New Yorkers carry firearms even in such scenarios, so long as it’s private property that’s open to the public. |

John Bednar, MD, has seen it all when it comes to hunting accidents. Broken bones, injured backs, heart attacks, you name it. “Common hunting injuries include falls, whether that’s a fall while you’re hiking, carrying, hauling or whether it’s a fall out of the tree stand,” says Dr. Bednar, an emergency room physician with OSF HealthCare. “Other injuries that we see in the emergency department are accidental shootings, whether it’s self-inflicted or somebody else in your party.”
