"The sniper spree in the D.C. area has spawned calls for 'ballistic fingerprinting' of firearms."

"Sen. Charles Schumer, New York Democrat, announced he would introduce legislation for a national program. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence told The Washington Post that ballistic fingerprinting would have 'solved this crime after the first shooting.' "

"But an October 2001 report by California state ballistics experts — hushed up by the California attorney general's office — concludes ballistic fingerprinting isn't feasible right now." ...

"At issue is technology known as ballistic fingerprinting. It uses the distinct marks a gun leaves on shell casings and bullets to link firearms with crimes. Also known as 'gun DNA,' ballistic fingerprints could serve as a shortcut for law enforcement officials in solving the sniper attacks and other murders. A limited database, the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network, run by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, is already in use, but ..."

CONSIDER...

Human DNA doesn't change, nor do fingerprints. But you can change a gun's internal markings in a couple of minutes. These people using the terms "DNA" and "fingerprints" need to be corrected every time they use them.

"Black powder with the power of six or seven sticks of dynamite was lurking in 15 powder horns, a rifle, one pistol and two cannons."

" 'They were all muzzle-loading black powder weapons,' said William Pestle, collections manager in the department of anthropology."

"Former talk show host Rosie O'Donnell [who said, "I don't care. Own a gun, go to prison."] has hired a high-profile criminal attorney to take on the case of two brothers accused of fatally beating their sleeping father in his Florida Panhandle home."

"O'Donnell, a foster parent known for supporting children's causes, called Miami attorney Jayne Weintraub two weeks ago and asked her to get involved in the legal fight to win a new trial for Alex and Derek King, ages 13 and 14, Weintraub told The Associated Press Sunday." ...

"The case was tugging at her heart strings. She was offended by what happened to these kids," Weintraub said about O'Donnell. "She told me that she wanted to do something for the boys and asked me if there was something that could be done."

"Alex and Derek were both a year younger when their father, Terry King, 40, was beaten to death with an aluminum baseball bat Nov. 26 while he slept at home in Cantonment."

"A wit has opined that in addition to calling for national ballistic registration, an extension on the 'assault weapons' ban and expanded gun control in general, the mentally-challenged anti-gun forces now emboldened by the fatal D.C. snipings should also be calling for the outlawing of white delivery vans. After all, white vans also appear to be an integral part of the snipers' murderous activities."

"A van ban would do about as much good, too. After all, several of the shootings took place in Maryland, which already has the totally useless ballistic registration law in place, (and I do mean totally – not a single criminal has ever been caught due to this ridiculous and easily circumvented procedure). And just in case this little fact hasn't completely escaped everyone's attention, shooting people in the head is already against the law!" ...
