Democrats Press Law to Ban Plastic Guns

"Senate Democrats plan to urge Congress to reauthorize a law banning plastic guns that could be used by terrorists to slip past airport metal detectors."

"Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation to reauthorize the Terrorist Firearm Detection Act of 1988, which bans the creation or possession plastic firearms. Exemptions for the military and intelligence agencies are provided in the law."

"Officials worry terrorists would be able to get their hands on plastic weapons that would have no metal parts to set off metal detectors at airports and other security checkpoints."

"The bill was last reauthorized in 1998 and expires in December."

"That’s the difference between your compromise and the NAACP’s incrementalist approach. You, Mr. Halbrook, conceded to evil. The NAACP fought it one case at a time and won. And as much as you want to spin your words as comparable to the NAACP’s strategy, they aren’t even close. You compromised on principles, Mr. Halbrook. This is an unacceptable compromise in my book, and one that you and the NRA should be ashamed of."

"So has compromise been an effective strategy in the gun rights movement? That would depend on what your ultimate goal is. If your ultimate goal is the restoration of our absolute right to keep and bear arms, thus far it has been an abysmal failure."

Stephen Halbrook's Statement About Handgun Registration (blog)

Clayton Cramer on Stephen Halbrook's court statement.

-------
"I am not in support of, or even neutral, on gun registration. These laws are almost completely ineffective at solving violent crimes, as near as anyone can tell, completely useless for preventing violent crimes, and primarily useful for punishing gun control law violations--assuming that the police make any serious effort to use the existing registration for those purpose. They are potentially useful for various gun confiscation schemes, which is why many people--myself included, are afraid of mandatory registration laws."

"These registration laws don't actually make it practical to disarm the criminals and mental patients that need to be disarmed--remember, the Supreme Court has ruled that if you can't lawfully own a gun, you can't be punished for failing to register it, since the Fifth Amendment protects you from mandatory self-incrimination. Only the lawful owner of a gun may be punished for failing to register. But they do provide an excuse that the gun prohibitionists can use to persuade the ignorant that such confiscation schemes can work. Stupid, ineffective, a waste of time and money, yes. But unconstitutional? Not necessarily."

"Aside from the philosophical questions, there's a larger issue here. The right to keep and bear arms has been largely destroyed in places like the District of Columbia by taking one slice at a time, until they have managed to get just about the whole loaf. To get our rights back means taking them back, one slice at a time." ...

-------
There is a big difference between getting odious laws repealed one slice at a time and conceding that any part of the odious laws are in any way acceptable.

" 'It doesn't speak well for our society. It's not a healthy situation,' she said. 'I think it's appropriate for us as a community to say we don't need or want assault weapons in our homes.' "

"A year has passed since I obtained a license to carry a concealed handgun. At the time I applied for the license, I seemed sort of obsessed with guns. It wasn't clear whether 9/11 or middle age or something else caused my sudden enthusiasm for pistols."

"Whatever it was, it mostly passed. I still own guns and enjoy occasional target practice, but I don't spend much time thinking about them."

"Curiously, I pay attention when handguns appear on TV. Say I'm watching a cop show, and somebody on TV bursts through a door carrying a pistol. Suddenly I quit watching the show and watch that gun instead. Without meaning to, I've come to recognize various makes and models of handguns."

"...The thrust of the proposed treaty isn't just controlling the illegal small arms trade. It also involves United Nations control of civilian ownership of firearms, a right we are guaranteed under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, but which might be subverted in a United Nations treaty."

This is an excerpt from an interview John Gibson did with Wayne LaPierre about the so-called "Enemies List" published by the NRA.

-------
"Wayne Lapierre is executive vice president and CEO of the NRA. The big question at this hour, Wayne: are you shooting yourself in the foot with an enemies' list? Even Nixon figured out that's a bad idea."

"WAYNE LAPIERRE: Hi, John. No, I wouldn't call it an enemy's list. Look, our members want to know who in the celebrity community is opposed to the Second Amendment and opposed to the constitutional freedom of Americans to hold fire arms."

"It kind of puts a permanent stain on the way our members feel about them. They don't want to buy their movies. They don't want to buy their songs. They don't want to support their careers."

"The rape of a Concordia University student in her dormitory room over the weekend sent shock waves through the small campus. The rape at gunpoint of a prospective student at Macalester College in April had the same effect. At Augsburg College in Minneapolis, a man was charged with sexual assault after he entered a dormitory and had sex with an inebriated woman. Also in September, a University of Minnesota student leaving her dorm early in the morning was forced into an SUV at gunpoint, raped at another location and returned to campus. Finally, female students at the University of St. Thomas have made at least four reports of sexual assaults since the fall semester began."

"According to a recent report from the California Attorney General's office, 'Gangs have spread from major urban areas in California to the suburbs and even to rural communities.' At the same time, their access to guns seems unlimited."

"This mixture of youth, gangs and guns is helping to fuel a rise in violent crime and bloodshed in Oakland and other communities. Gang-related homicides are rising drastically in California, increasing nearly 61 percent between 1999 and 2001, according to state Department of Justice figures. The gang violence tracks a general increase in homicides, both in Oakland and in the state."

"The 16-year-old student was with a group of friends who were injured when the gunman opened fire as they chatted in a school field in Kirkby."

-------
There are already calls to ban air guns. Seeing how ineffective the firearm ban is, expect criminal use of air guns to increase.

GREY sky and rain was an appropriate backdrop yesterday for a sombre remembrance ceremony for those killed in the Monash University shootings.

Students William Wu and Steven Chan died when a man with four pistols and a knife opened fire in their 15-person tutorial on October 21 last year.

Four students and lecturer Lee Gordon-Brown were injured before the gunman was restrained.

A colourful tile mural now stands as a permanent memorial to those who were killed.

Six months ago, Monash student Katherine Ryan set up a tent on the campus and invited students to paint tiles for the memorial mural.

Yesterday the finished work, comprising more than 200 tiles, was unveiled before about 150 people.

It is also promoting the creation of an alternative presidential debate sponsor -- the nonpartisan Citizens' Debate Commission -- comprised of national civic organizations committed to maximizing voter education."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. — Samuel Adams
