... "He looked around the battlefield that had been his home, and carefully raised himself out of the recliner. It wouldn't do to fall and break a hip now. Company was coming, and he had to be ready to greet them. He hoped it would be today. He had been scared of the attacking Nathaniel Victors ... But now, at the end of his life, he wasn't afraid of the thugs who had targeted him. He was only afraid that they wouldn't come."

"He had known that that they would get around to him sooner or later. He'd run his mouth too much. He was too political. He'd made his disdain for the thugs and their gang plain enough and now they were going to settle accounts. Frank Grant had met him at the pharmacy last month. The thugs had been asking about him, Frank said ..." ...

"The news is atwitter about the arrest of Tarek Mehanna for various terrorism related charges. Supposedly, one of his ambitions was to shoot up a shopping mall ..." ...

"What, I wonder, thwarted their mall-massacring ambitions? Ah--here it is:"

"The idea stalled, Loucks said, after Mehanna and the others were unable to get automatic weapons."

"Now when a mainstream media report mentions 'automatic weapons,' there's always the problem of trying to figure out whether they really mean 'automatic weapons,' ..."

"In this case, though, it doesn't really matter. Why is that? Well, according to the Brady Campaign, a semi-automatic firearm is, for all intents and purposes, about as 'lethal' as a fully automatic one." ...

"There are two ways for a politician to keep their job, do something effective or make it look like you are. When it comes to gun control, all too often it is the latter."

"The subject of gun control is a tough one for some politicians. They want to create the impression that they are 'doing something' about crime and violence but are at a loss as to what to do. ..." ...

"One of the lies those that push for more gun control perpetuate is that armed self-defense is ineffective. They'll try to tell you that bad guys will take your gun away from you, or that you'd just miss anyway, or that all you'd do is wound and anger an assailant."

"Fortunately, their lies have fallen on increasingly deaf ears over the last twenty years or so as concealed carry reform has swept the country. More states than ever recognize the gun rights of their citizens, and the wins are starting to pile up for the good guys." ...

"For a decade, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been forbidden by Congress from doing research on gun-control issues. Such piddling hurdles as federal law don't matter to the Obama administration."

"With a wave of a hand, the CDC has simply redefined gun-control research so the ban no longer applies. ... 'These particular grants do not address gun control; rather they deal with the surrounding web of circumstances,' wrote [NIH] spokesman Don Ralbovsky."

"Gun-control advocates claim that banning the CDC from examining gun control amounts to a gag order on science. ... But the issue isn't about scientific inquiry. It is whether government resources should be used to promote an ideological agenda." ...

"The United States Constitution gives meaning and substance to our republic and our rights."

"The Second Amendment [is a] pretty straight-forward statement on the right to bear arms, isn’t it? Depends on one's perspective, apparently."

"Some people opine that the intent of this amendment allows only militias, such as the National Guard, to keep and bear arms. My reading is the amendment clearly states that 'the people' ... have the right to bear arms."

"Whenever a high profile or mass shooting occurs, the primary focus is often on the weapon used in commission of the crime. Many cities have a 'zero tolerance' approach to gun possession, rendering the possession of a gun by any private citizen illegal. ..." ...

"Last week, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law that requires handgun ammunition to be treated by retailers in much the same way that cigarettes, some cold medicines and even spray paint are treated."

"As already shown in some California cities, this common sense measure will go a long way toward keeping ammunition away from gang members and felons in California, and provide law enforcement crucial leads to track down and apprehend armed criminals."

"Getting this bill passed was the top priority of our California Brady Campaign Chapters this year ..." ...

"Saying it is in no way a panacea, but rather an important new tool to combat gun violence, Assemblyman Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, thanked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for signing his bill, AB 962, which requires firearm dealers to fingerprint people who buy bullets."

"'Let me be very clear. Bullets are the lifeblood of guns. Guns don't kill people; bullets do,' said de Leon during a ceremonial signing Oct. 15 in Los Angeles."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A former Greenacres police officer has been charged with vehicular homicide for a February crash.

Gary Chan turned himself in Tuesday night, and he was released Wednesday on $10,000 bail.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 38-year-old Chan was investigating a car burglary Feb. 10 when he left to retrieve the victim's wallet, which was found at another crime scene. FHP says Chan was going as fast as 47 mph over the speed limit, lights and sirens going, when he crashed into a car being driven by 69-year-old Azinta Thompson. Both drivers were taken by helicopter to a Delray hospital, where Thompson later died.

Chan was terminated from the police department in August on unrelated charges.
