"Not too long ago, GOA alerted you to a dangerous education bill (H.R. 1078) that was on a 'fast track' to George Bush's desk. This bill would set up so-called Presidential Academies to train educators in history and civics, with no safeguards that the education would steer clear of the existing anti-gun propaganda that is ALREADY PREVALENT in the public schools."
We are pleased to report that because of your activism, six cosponsors of H.R. 1078 have removed their names from the bill:
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL) Rep. John Kline (R-MN) Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA)

"Most Americans are confused regarding their rights under the Second Amendment, which prevents the federal government from banning citizens from acquiring firearms. Make no mistake; the ultimate objective of the Sarah Brady Campaign, the Violence Policy Center, Americans for Gun Safety, the Million Mom March, the ADL, the New York Times and their stooges in network TV news, is the total ban of all firearms ownership." |

"Parents should not only talk to their children about sex and drugs, but about firearms — what they are, how they work and the proper way to deal with them. As with so much in life, education is the key."

"Last month, the CDC released new data showing that gun violence rates are again rising after seven straight years of decline. We cannot say exactly why that is, but we do know that the trend is, once again, moving in the wrong direction. Now is the time to embrace the possibility that a strong, effective national gun policy may be our most effective, though as yet untried, weapon against gun violence."

"Many boys say they are not interested in playing with guns and may even describe them as their least favorite object in a group of play items, but many will still touch a gun if left alone with one, new research suggests."
"Almost two-thirds of the boys who touched an air pistol when left alone with it also said that the gun was their least favorite object in a group of play items..." ...
"Declaring a gun off-limits has little effect on the actual behavior of boys looking for a toy, the researchers found. Boys who were cautioned not to touch the gun were not any more or less likely to do so, suggesting that warnings themselves do not turn guns into tempting objects for boys." |

"On October 23, the eighth annual Day of National Concern about Young People and Gun Violence, millions of students from around the country will join together in pledging to do their part to end gun violence. From Honolulu to New York City, young people will be signing a voluntary pledge: 'I will never carry a gun to school; I will never use a gun to settle a personal problem or dispute; and I will use my influence with my friends to keep them from using guns to settle disputes.' "
------- They need more in the pledge. "I will beg the rapist to please use a condom. I will beg the mugger to please not harm me. I will stand by, powerless to intervene, whenever I see criminals attacking the helpless." This is the way to raise a nation of irresponsible cowards. |

"...I grew up believing that only the police and military had a right to carry guns because of the nature of their work. I lived through four military takeovers of an elected government. Each time, many of us lived in fear, powerless to do anything about military excesses. I personally witnessed people bludgeoned with the ends of bayonets. I read reports of innocent people killed because some policeman's pride had been injured. On one occasion, I was forced to flee the capital and live with friends because stray bullets shattered the windows of our home. We had no right to defend ourselves. We never questioned that. He who has never known freedom does not miss it." |

State Attorney Bill Cervone toured Alachua County Schools on Thursday, collecting pledge cards signed by more than 20,000 students, saying they know the dangers of firearms, and what to do if they come across one.
"You stop, don't touch, leave the area, and tell an adult," says Alachua Elementary fifth grader Tony Waters. He and more than four hundred others gave a large banner to Cervone at a ceremony Thursday afternoon. Cervone says it's important to be proactive with the kids, when it comes to guns. "It's important for us as adults, to tell them that there are responsible choices to be made with guns, and it's their obligation even as young people to know what those choices are and follow through with them."
A federal grant is paying for the education, Cervone says next year, other area counties will be included. |

"The Transportation Security Administration is a joke, and not a funny one, either. As you pass through the TSA's airport checkpoints, you can expect to overhear mutters about the 'gestapo,' the 'morons,' and similar commentary from outraged but powerless travelers who have chosen to swallow their self-respect and submit to pointless, degrading invasions of their persons and property in order to avoid offending the thugs who, whenever they choose, can prevent passengers from proceeding with their travel. "Stephen Porter, a 25-year-old Black man, has charged that Minneapolis police officers beat and sodomized him during a raid in North Minneapolis. The raid took place Monday, October 13 in the 2500 block of 3rd St. North. Porter explained during several news conferences last week that while he was in police custody, officers sexually assaulted him by forcing a toilet plunger into his rectum." "At a press conference, City and police officials refused to comment in any detail about the charges except to say that 'it involves allegations of a possible sexual assault,' in the words of Police Chief Robert Olson. Attorneys for the accused officers, Jeffrey Jindra and Todd Babeakuhl, have denied the charges." ...
"Although Stephen Porter’s charge of sodomy reflects the sinister turn that 'law enforcement' and, more generally, modern American culture has taken recently, it is equally disturbing that city government and the mainstream media have completely overlooked the victimization of other individuals who were in the house during the raid." |
