"With the media interest shown toward Oath Keepers this past week, from Chris Matthews to Lou Dobbs, I'd be remiss if I didn't credit the one group that helped gin up enough buzz to pique their interest: the Southern Poverty Law Center."

"It would be fair to ask why a group that supposedly exists to fight violence and racism would target a group that specifically disavows those very things:" ...

"We are Not advocating or promoting any act or acts of aggression against any organization or person for any reason including, but not limited to; race, religion, national origin, political affiliation, gender or sexual orientation." ...

"Dear BATFE Acting Director Melson:"

"We at Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership recently received the document that is copied below for your convenience. We would respectfully ask you to either validate these assertions or refute them in detail."

"Our organization has had a long and disconcerting experience with the agency you now head. We would suggest that you might seek to bring a refreshing era of candor and honesty…and, if possible, a substantial dose of legality… to the BATFE. You can certainly start by examining the following carefully compiled expose in detail, and then tell Americans if you are truly planning a national gun registry. ..." ...

The statists' fear and loathing of the Oath Keepers

"We have seen, within just the last week or so, a growing media awareness of the Oath Keepers, a group--consisting mostly of police officers and military service members--who have vowed to disobey any illegal, unconstitutional orders they may be given. With this growing awareness, we are also seeing growing consternation among those who, apparently, find the idea of troops and police officers who refuse to take part in crimes against the American people alarming." ...

Guns and public health

"In keeping with the coming trend of treating gun violence as a public health issue, I think it helpful to point out that those of us with guns can positively affect public health. We can help treat Hoplophobia in the general public. Hoplophobia is the fear of firearms or weapons in general. ... Another common manifestation is the belief that anyone carrying a gun in public will certainly shoot someone, and probably shoot the person suffering from hoplophobia."

"One of the basic treatments for phobias is called systematic desensitization or exposure therapy . This was developed and used in 1958 by Dr. Joseph Wolpe. It involves gradual familiarization with the feared item or event which leads to an abatement of the phobia. ..." ...

Is California AB 962 a precursor to 'ammunition accountability' laws?

"California's restrictive new ammunition sales law, AB 962, is bad enough in its own right. Peaceable, responsible gun owners will now face additional difficulites in procuring ammunition, ammunition vendors will take on considerable additional costs, difficulties, and risks of legal culpability, and California's vast, authoritarian, nanny-state bureaucracy will grow still larger."

"But all that has been discussed elsewhere already. My new concern is that this law will come to be seen as 'a good first step'--and remember, to the forcible citizen disarmament lobby, every new restriction is 'a good first step.'" ...

"Lock 'N Load (Showtime, Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET) is a lighthearted docu-series about gun culture and customer service as practiced in Denver. Practically an infomercial for a mom-and-pop weapons emporium called The Shootist, it celebrates small business (Wal-Mart gets disparaged by name on a few occasions) and big stopping power. ..." ...

"Shot primarily with stationary cameras mounted in the store, Lock 'N Load captures these chatty commercial interactions. The Shootist's clientele comprises people who regard a gun as, variously, a safety device, a security blanket, a sporting good, a fetish object, a surrogate phallus, and even an aphrodisiac. ..." ...

"When Massad Ayoob saw it, he said, 'If, like me, you believe that decent citizens have the right to protect themselves and their loved ones from lethally violent criminals, Gerard will give you powerful ammunition with which to argue.'"

"Buckeye Firearms Association Chairman Jim Irvine agreed, noting that 'readers find his writing a refreshing viewpoint and soak it up, because such straightforward logic is so hard to find today.'" ...

"'Sir, I protest this requisition. ...' The Captain looked for hope in the bird colonel's hatchet face. There was none to be seen."

"The Colonel was sympathetic but his hands were tied. He replied in a voice of flint, 'Captain this order originated in the E-Ring. ... You understand why these people want our rations, don't you?'"

"I noticed a recent article in the Washington Times (which is to print what Fox News is to TV) that had me thinking, 'Here we go again.'"

"The article, headlined 'U.S., after long ban, quietly begins to study gun safety,' reported, with barely-concealed alarm, that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is studying the risks to teenagers from carrying guns. Can you imagine that? A government agency believing that teens with guns should be considered an issue of public health?" ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Thereby proving our fears, that you and your NIH sock puppets have already decided that it is "an issue of public health" and are doing the study to show how bad it is.

"An armed intruder who broke broke in to a San Marcos, TX home was shot in self defense by a resident."

"Police say that at about 9:50 PM on Wednesday, a suspect armed with a realistic looking BB gun broke in to a home on the 700 block of Oscar Smith Drive. The residents called 911, but the intruder successfully broke in before police arrived. One of the residents grabbed his self defense handgun and fired multiple shot at the intruder, causing him to flee, according to police. Shortly thereafter, a man reportedly suffering from multiple gunshot wounds was found seeking treatment at a nearby hospital, and was listed in stable condition hours after the attempted home invasion." ...

"A young mother who obtained a restraining order against her husband Wednesday was shot to death Thursday afternoon. Her spouse ambushed her as she walked into her home. Her father was also shot by the husband, who subsequently killed himself." ...

"Friends and neighbors said Melissa Charbonneau, 29, went to her ... house with her father to collect some of her belongings."

"Inside, she encountered her husband, Jonathan Charbonneau Sr., 32. He ran down the stairs and shot her ..." ...

"'They went to the house to get something. He (Jonathan Charbonneau) wasn't supposed to be in the house,' Pierce said." ...

Submitter's Note: The Brady bunch should be proud of her, she did everything right. She got a restraining order, she refused to "escalate the violence" by having a gun of her own, her father was similarly helpless (except as a bullet sponge).

"Virginia Tech, the week of October 15, 2009, and another student goes missing, Morgan Dana Harrington. Would this be considered violence? Do you believe this would be considered a completed violent act?"

"I have written a brief series on campus violence prevention centers, and suggested how to make it all work better. What qualifies me to remark to them?"

"Experience. Call it work experience. Call it Socratic."

"How do you make violence prevention better?"

"By actually preventing the violence. There are two halves to the concept of violence prevention. College campuses extol the first half, and ignore the second half. ..." ...

"Amtrak is raising serious objections to a proposal that would allow passengers to stow unloaded guns in their checked baggage, saying the train operator cannot screen passengers' bags the same way airlines do."

"The Senate passed a measure last month that would allow passengers to declare and check a weapon on the trains, something airline passengers can do now, provided the weapon is unloaded and in a hard and locked case." ...

"'That could jeopardize the operations of Amtrak because ... we don't have the monies to invest in the protocol necessary to guarantee that these weapons won't be used against the traveling public,' said Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss." ...

"The [NSSF], the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, applauded the introduction of legislation, the Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act (HR 3749), to greatly enhance the ability of federal land managers to provide, promote and plan for recreational uses that balance the needs and interests of all outdoor enthusiasts."

"The bill, introduced by U.S. Reps. Dan Boren (D-Okla.) and Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), requires that all federal public land planners evaluate the effects that management initiatives have on outdoors activities and provide a clear analysis of how proposed actions would affect these traditional users of federal public lands." ...

"The annual commemoration of the April 19, 1775, Battle at Lexington Green — with its 'Don't Tread on Me' slogans and tea dumping tax protest — seemed a particularly auspicious time for Celia S. Hyde to join Oath Keepers, a new group dedicated to upholding the U.S. Constitution."

"It also helped that Ms. Hyde, a retired Bolton police chief and owner of the Stowaway Inn in Stow, had a room available for Patriot's Day weekend, when an official from the national organization came to give a talk on Lexington Green."

"Now the Massachusetts director for Oath Keepers, and a member of its national board, Ms. Hyde said the goal of the group is simple — to abide by and protect the Constitution." ...

"The maker of Taser stun guns has advised law enforcement agencies to avoid hitting suspects in the chest, partly 'to minimize controversy.'"

"'Taser has long stood by the fact that our technology is not risk free and is often used during violent and dangerous confrontations,' Taser International spokesman Steve Tuttle said in a memo referring to an October 12 training bulletin." ...

Submitter's Note: I think there was a typo in that story. Probably the reasoning is "to minimize fatalities."

"Armed police officers are to patrol the streets of London for the first time in an attempt to tackle a rise in gang-related gun crime."

"Traditionally officers from the Metropolitan Police's specialist firearms unit – codenamed CO19 – have been deployed on the streets only when a response to incidents of gun crime is necessary or to protect VIPs."

"The new initiative, announced yesterday, will see CO19 officers patrolling the capital's most dangerous streets and housing estates alongside neighbourhood officers. It has been described as a 'proactive' response to the 17 per cent increase in gun crime over the past six months." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The NRA has a point about the inadvisability of simply taking guns away from the populace. If that were possible, it would not disarm that small percentage of the population willing to break the law.... Punishing people who obey the law is backward thinking. — Hugh Downs, Veteran ABC newsman
