Last Saturday I attended a National Rifle Association breakfast for local Republican legislative candidates. An NRA lobbyist jetted in to tell a few lies and fire up the troops. The NRA desperately wants Republicans to control our Legislature, and will put up big bucks to keep making big bucks on gun sales.

The fate of Kickin' Brass Gun Range is now in the hands of the court. A preliminary injunction hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at Jackson County Circuit Court in front of Judge Thomas Wilson.
Leoni Township Attorney Eric White filed the injunction after a unanimous vote Oct. 11 of Leoni Township Board.
White said Joe Trolz, owner of Kickin' Brass, had the opportunity to prove he was operating his range before July 5, 1994, which would grandfather in his shooting range through the Michigan Sports Shooting Range Act of 1989. However, Trolz was unable to prove the range existed before 1994, White said. |

It took them a year and more than $4 million, but the first part of the range is now open.

The Hibbing School District is determined to find a way to keep the Lincoln Elementary gun range open. “We’re not closing the gun range,” said Superintendent Brad Johnson. “No one said we’re shutting it down and I’m sick of hearing it. As the superintendent, I’m trying to find an amicable solution.” At the Oct. 5 meeting, the school board formed a committee to research ways to ensure safety while allowing access to the gun range. Due to safety concerns from the community, the gun range was temporarily closed and will remain that way until there’s a solution in place. |

The day was spent hunting, but the goal was to heal. And sometimes, that means getting back in your element, with others who have served beside you. "I hunted as a child and so I just wanted to get back out hunting. And the opportunity to interact with fellow veterans all day I thought would be really awesome," Veteran Ashleigh Wall said.

We reckon there are precious few discussions of glass in almost any context that won’t eventually include Carl Zeiss. The company’s 170th anniversary is right around the corner (Nov. 17), after all, so this should not surprise. Carl Zeiss camera lenses, planetarium projectors and microscopes (the original claim to fame) are all of legendary excellence, and are perhaps reason enough that nearly any shooter should listen up: Those same optics can bedeck your rifles. Certainly our experience with the Victory V8 1-8x30 riflescope advances such a proposition with an urgency that we did not quite expect.

Donald Trump is a clear menace to our democratic form of government, the rule of law and my James Madison bobblehead. The teenage Ted Cruz could recite the entire Constitution from memory. Trump wouldn't know it from Two Corinthians. But it's not exactly safe to entrust your copy of the Constitution to Hillary Clinton, either. You might get it back with some parts missing or mutilated -- like the First Amendment and the Second.

However, as is usually the case, reality is a lot more complicated than the hype.

Every 35 hours a Montanan takes his/her own life, giving Montana the highest suicide rate in the nation. It is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-44, and 460 Montana veterans killed themselves over 10 years. |
