Steel cartridge case use in handguns (as well as long guns) has been the source of controversy since their inception. One of the biggest misconceptions is since steel is harder than brass or aluminum, it must be harder on the gun as it travels through the cycle of operation. Those of that opinion are quick to reference extractor breakage or failure, especially in the AR-15/M16 platforms.

The committee where all state gun legislation starts made it clear Monday that two bills may not make it out. A pair of Democrats, Rep. Greg Leding and Sen. Will Bond, have drafted their own red flag law, which would temporarily seize guns from Arkansans who are deemed dangerous. "That, sir, I find extremely dangerous and troubling," Tim Loggins, a gun rights advocate and Arkansas Department of Correction retiree, told the joint judiciary committee. "What we're really talking about is we want to expand the ability to take private property. We're wanting to expand the government's ability to deny my rights to a weapon."

Stand Your Ground legislation allows citizens to use a firearm for self-defense in most public places. While these statues vary from state to state, generally they allow the public to use deadly force in any area they have a legal right to be, without a duty to retreat. Removing that duty is what has made the legislation both desired, and controversial. In Lakeland, FL, Michael Dunn, an elected city commissioner, was charged with murder after shooting a shoplifter, Christobal Lopez.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is finding new allies in his campaign to “bankrupt” the National Rifle Association, as three additional states follow his call to take legal action against the gun-rights group’s insurance program. And an ethics watchdog anticipates more states could join. “It is troubling that we have seen the government targeting individuals and organizations to silence them based on their political positions,” Kendra Arnold, executive director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), told Fox News.

This was a tragedy. Last year, a young woman was shot and killed in a road rage incident. That breaks my heart. Now, a Pennsylvania legislator proposes to outlaw all loaded firearms in cars. That sounds good. Gun control offers us the myth of perfection. In contrast, reality is messy, but reality includes a lot of lives that are saved when honest people protect themselves with a gun. Fantasy gun prohibition laws may feel good, but they cost lives.

The average first-offense fine for someone caught bringing a gun through an airport TSA checkpoint is $3,900 and it applies—with certain law enforcement and armed flight officer exemptions—even if you’re one of the more than 17 million people with a carry permit. It’s an expensive oversight guaranteed to dampen the holiday spirit of anyone traveling in the next few weeks. Civil penalties of up to $13,333 can be levied by the agency and when local law enforcement arrives criminal charges may follow.

The Supreme Court Has a Chance to Enforce Heller

In 2008, the Supreme Court’s decision in District of Columbia v. Heller gave teeth to the Second Amendment, holding that the “right of the people to keep and bear Arms” did, in fact, guarantee citizens the right to “keep” arms in their home for self-defense. Yet one decade later, lower courts continue to resist following Heller. Most shocking, several federal courts of appeals have ruled that whatever the Second Amendment says about the right to “keep” arms in your home, it does not guarantee lawful American citizens the right to “bear” arms in public for their self-defense.

Walther is one of those European gun companies that gets it. Historically, many overseas firms have taken a “my way or the highway” approach to the American market—introducing guns with features Europeans prefer rather than catering to shooters in this country.

Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund has endorsed Mikie Sherrill for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district. “We are proud to support these candidates, who have pledged to put public safety ahead of gun lobby priorities,” said John Feinblatt, President of Everytown for Gun Safety. “The fact that gun sense champions are running strong campaigns in red, blue and purple states is further proof that the political calculus on gun safety has dramatically shifted.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. — Tench Coxe in `Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution' under the Pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian" in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789 at 2 col. 1.
