Responsible gun owners defended themselves, but you didn't hear it in the news. Instructor Tony Simon talks about three new examples.
First story- You pull into a parking place at the mall. You’re getting out of your truck when a man is suddenly next to you. He has a knife and cuts your arm.
Second Story- It is the middle of the day. You and your cousin walk past another man when the stranger draws a gun from his pocket and points it at you. You are closest, so you knock the gun out of the way.
Third story- You’re standing in your driveway. A man runs up to you. He is wearing a mask and carrying a gun. He orders you into your home.
What would you do in these situations? Text and podcast at the link. (17 minutes) |

Democrats advanced legislation Tuesday that would ban trigger modification devices that allow guns to fire more rapidly, saying stricter regulations are needed following the mass shooting in Las Vegas. Supporters led by state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, said the measure is designed to prohibit the sale and possession of “bump stocks,” which were used by the Las Vegas shooter to allow semi-automatic rifles to mimic fully automatic weapons.

Probably the hottest niche in concealed-carry guns right now is the slim, subcompact, single-stack 9mm semi-automatic pistol. What a biologist would call the “type specimen” of the single-stack 9mm species would probably be the early Kahr models from the late 1990s. Over time, the market has diversified to the point where it featured everything from budget-priced offerings from Taurus or Kel-Tec, all the way up to guns like Walther’s PPS and the recently-discontinued Kimber Solo.

“[O]ne of the persistent and puzzling aspects of the politics of guns in this country is the insistence by ‘gun rights’ advocates on invoking the Second Amendment as a magical talisman, seeking to shut down all talk of gun control by asserting that such laws would violate the Constitution,” Neil H. Buchanan writes on Justia. The guy’s a Professor of Law at a university servicing establishment elites, so it’s probably safe to assume his “magical” misdirection and definition of “shall not be infringed” will accommodate all kinds of nuances, deviations and contortions that mere readers of plain English will miss.

At the age of 59 in 1914, John Moses Browning was anything but slowing down. The firearm genius had already designed single-shot rifles, pump-action rifles and shotguns, lever-action rifles and shotguns, semi-automatic pistols and machine guns. Many of his inventions had been sold outright to Colt or Winchester, but before the turn of the century management at those companies rejected Browning’s demand for a royalty on his designs instead of a flat fee.

Small, easily concealed handguns have become an increasingly popular choice among firearm consumers. It makes sense to assume many of these pistols are carried in pockets. Pocket carry may actually be the most-popular mode of carry, but I wonder how many folks actually practice with it? Being small, lightweight and often equipped with miniscule sights and heavy trigger pulls, pocket pistols aren’t the easiest guns to shoot well. Then again, attributes such as compact size and light weight make these handguns easy to carry around. Some folks use them as primary-defense pistols, while others relegate them to the role of backup guns.

The Tea Party — if organized as a separate entity — would be the third-biggest political party in Texas, but it’s big enough to exert a strong influence on conservative policies and positions, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll. Asked which party they identify with, 47 percent of the registered voters in the poll chose the GOP and 42 percent chose the Democrats. But if there were three parties with candidates on a congressional ballot, 17 percent said they would vote for the Tea Party candidate, 22 percent for the Republican, and 37 percent for the Democrat.

“Gun Carnage Is a Public Health Crisis,” declares an Oct. 13 editorial from The New York Times, accusing lawmakers of using mental health or the legality of slide fire stocks as diversionary tactics and asserting, “The problem is the weapon, not the latest accessory.” The Times also repeats accusations of the government stifling research, and the NRA “lethally marketing” the “military style” firearms to civilians. Fortune magazine similarly claimed guns were a public health crisis, citing the Oct. 1 shooting in Las Vegas as proof.'

Hunting turnout and results dipped on the first weekend of the 2017 general deer and elk season, with fewer hunters and kills coming through Northwest Montana’s check stations compared to last year’s opener. “I haven’t had this few hunters through the check station in a really long time,” said Bruce Sterling, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist in Thompson Falls. According to an agency press release, 3,041 hunters checked 278 white-tailed deer (132 were bucks), four mule deer and 22 elk, making for a 10 percent rate of Region One hunters with game.

Aside from the rain in many parts of the state earlier today, it's been an unusually dry and warm October - conditions that generally don't result in successful deer hunting. Yes, some big bucks have been taken in many spots across the state (see photo gallery below). Anecdotally, though, many hunters are not having much luck. Interviews this week with two Upstate NY deer hunting experts and a SUNY ESF wildlife biologist shed light on what's happening.
