You’re standing weak-kneed in the cold morgue, the technician peels back the sheet covering the lifeless body of your loved one. You must identify the body. You see the cut and bloodied face, the missing eye. Your throat tightens. You vomit. You wail No, again and again. Your eyes tightly closed, tears flooding, teeth clenched, you can’t forget how many times you gave the warnings. Clearly, unmistakably, truthfully, you warned. Your loved one disregarded your warnings. And now this.

Here I am, a grown man 40 years old, I’ve got a wife, daughter, a really fat Chocolate Lab, car payment, huge mortgage and all the trappings going along with being grown up — and I felt just like a five year old kid caught with both hands in the cookie jar. “What’s that sticking out of your shirt boy,” said a familiar voice. Glancing down, I saw the butt of the Colt New Service sticking out between the buttons of my shirt.

I’ve gotten to play around with a lot of shotguns over the last year, ranging from compact bullpups to sleek waterfowl guns, but Mossberg’s new 940 Pro Tactical stands out as the highlight of the scattergun crop. I had an annoying hole in my gun collection where a reliable semi-auto 12-gauge tactical shotgun belonged. Most were either outside my price range or didn’t fit my wishes for size, ergonomic controls, and proven reliability.

There’s no doubt I’m afflicted. Anytime I go to a gun show or shop I do not look at the new stuff, I look for things falling within the rather flexible parameters of my collection. As a onetime gunsmith I especially like to look at pistols and revolvers that have been touched by gifted hands.
IPSC shooters will claim they launched the craze for customizing 1911-style pistols. Of course that isn’t true, for we can trace the accuracy work still done today back to the 1930s and the sport of Bullseye pistol. And long before pistols ruled, all of the events were fired with revolvers. Though some may cry heresy the fact is modern custom work began with them. |

I heard Pro-Palestinian protesters say they wanted to kill Jews. I expected to hear that extremism overseas but I did not expect it in the USA. Unless you’ve studied armed defense for a while, there is a lot for you to learn to defend yourself and your family. I want to label the steppingstones ahead of you because you don’t know what you don’t know.
A self-defense program is like a fitness class. You can study and practice a little every evening and you’ll be significantly better after a month. |

When first comparing the 5.7mm vs. 9mm, one might think they're very different.
The 9mm has a heavier bullet, while the 5.7 is more aerodynamic. The 9x19mm looks like a traditional semi-auto handgun round, and the 5.7 appears to be a miniature rifle cartridge. |

The terms “buckshot” and “birdshot” are often used a lot when discussing the different types of shotgun ammo. Many new shooters are confused about the difference between them, and that’s OK because we were all a little confused the first time we stepped up to the ammo counter.
