CCRKBA Blasts Remark From Brady Spokesman About Dropping Out of School

"[CCRKBA] is taking issue with a crass remark by Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, in which Hamm contended in a Fox News report that self-defense advocates have no business on college campuses."

"Hamm's remark, reported by Fox News on Wednesday, was, 'You don't like the fact that you can't have a gun on your college campus? Drop out of school.'"

"CCRKBA Executive Director Mark A. Taff, himself a part-time college student, fired back, 'For a fairly bright, though philosophically misguided guy, Peter said a remarkably stupid thing and he ought to apologize to every college student who believes that their right of self-defense should not be nullified simply by stepping onto a college campus.'" ...
-------

KABA Note: Mr. Hamm's comment reminds me of when abusive husbands used to tell their wives "if you don't like it just leave" knowing full well that a woman's financial prospects were miniscule, that she would probably lose custody of her children, etc..

"Tell me why in the world is this closed-minded, ignorant, incoherent sow still employed by the University of Northern Iowa and why tax dollars are paying her salary? After all, University of Northern Iowa is a state school, is it not? It's one thing to be a pacifist. It's one thing to not want guns in your life or want your children to join the military. It's your choice. Your personal choice. It's quite another to try and impose your twisted views on everyone else while receiving money from the very taxpayers whose rights you're trying to shred and whose sons and daughters choice to serve in the military you're trying to smear."

The consensus was that while no one knows exactly what will happen, it may well be historic."

"On Oct. 17, the Law School hosted the Annual Symposium of the George Mason University Civil Rights Law Journal, entitled 'The Second Amendment and Twenty-First Century Jurisprudence.' I spoke along with a number of other well-known figures in the gun debate, both pro-gun and anti-gun. ..." ...

"The original Ruger pistol, now called the Standard, had no model number, as it was the first, and for a time only, gun made by Sturm, Ruger. Prior to Bill Ruger's partnership with Sturm, he had successfully duplicated two Baby Nambu pistols while working in his garage, from a US Marine's captured Nambu, shortly after World War II. Although deciding against marketing the Baby Nambu Pistols, Ruger did incorporate the Nambu style rear cocking device and modified the Nambu's silhouette, plus he added a 4.75" lightweight barrel with fixed sights. The MK I added a Target model, which had a 5.5" bull barrel, or a 7" heavy taper barrel and adjustable sights. The MK II added a slide stop that held the slide open on the last round ..." ...

"When we conjure up images of the terrorist threat to America, it usually involves chemical, biological or, God forbid, nuclear weapons. But it turns out one of the biggest terrorist threats to ordinary New Yorkers is also one of the most familiar - and most ignored: ordinary handguns."

"Yet America's strategy for keeping firearms out of the hands of terrorists is lax beyond belief. It's so lax, in fact, that today, people on the federal terrorist watch list are not prohibited from purchasing guns. Just think - a person on the watch list can be barred from getting on a plane, but he or she cannot be prevented from buying some weapons." ...

"The District of Columbia government on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to address only a single issue, if it agrees to hear the city’s appeal seeking to reinstate its flat ban on private possession of handguns. In a reply brief, found here[.pdf], city officials contended that the only issue the Court need decide is the meaning of the Second Amendment as it applies directly to the city’s specific ban on pistols. This would involve an inquiry aimed at what the Amendment’s words mean, 'construed in light of their history, purpose, and place in this Nation’s tradition.'" ...

Heller, the so far successful Second Amendment challenge to the District of Columbia's ban on handguns and functional long guns, then Heller will be the biggest case of the Term. ... The scope of the constitutional issues raised -- what is the basic meaning of a whole provision of the Bill of Rights? -- and the sheer intensity of popular concern with gun rights and gun control will propel Heller to the center of this Term, and indeed of the early legacy of the Roberts Court." ...

"California - 2003: Governor Gray Davis was on the verge of being foisted out of office pending results of the special recall election. Since the recall was partly due to the Governor's anti-gun position, California gun owners were in a prime position to elect then-Senator Tom McClintock, an openly pro-gun legislator with the track record to prove it. ... The National Rifle Association did not endorse McClintock for the special election leaving gun owners to speculate about whether it is better to vote for a questionable Republican or an anti-gun Democrat.
