A rise in shootings on college campuses has added a new front in the gun debate, centering on this question: does it hurt, or help, to have more armed people at school? Eight states allow people to carry concealed weapons on the grounds of public colleges and universities, based on the belief that criminals will be less likely to open fire if they know they might be confronted by someone else with a gun. Texas became the latest this year, and there is a growing movement to expand the list.

A Fillmore County District Court jury in Geneva on Friday acquitted 62-year-old Ervin Fuehrer of assault and use of a deadly weapon. Authorities say Fuehrer shot his brother, Stephen Preslicka, on March 19, 2015, in Fuehrer's shop driveway following an argument. Fuehrer's attorney Bob Parker said in his closing arguments that Preslicka was wild when he showed up at Fuehrer's shop.

Guns have become an issue in the tight race for the District 1 Orange County Commission seat, though the next commissioner is unlikely to cast any vote that will expand or restrict gun laws. The National Rifle Association has endorsed commission hopeful Betsy VanderLey. An attack mailer from a usually pro-Republican political action committee derides her as having "extreme, pro-NRA values..." |

“Hacksaw Ridge” director Mel Gibson understands the history of the Second Amendment. “Well, I understand where it comes from, the right to bear arms because the Revolution and that stuff and tyranny and the right to defend yourself, and I still agree with that, but it’s kind of out of balance at the moment," he told Fox News at a recent press junket. "...Something has to be done in order to stop some of the heinous violence that has occurs just like sporadically and shockingly..." |

With gun control efforts stalled in Congress and in many statehouses, advocates are forging another path forward: They're going straight to the ballot box. Voters in four states will weigh gun control initiatives Nov. 8 ballot: Maine, Nevada, Washington and California. In Nevada and Maine, voters are being asked whether to strengthen background check requirements for gun sales. Washington State voters already did that; now they're considering whether to allow a court to take guns away from potentially dangerous people.

With final authority metal has slammed into metal and it is the sound of a gun. It could be the sound of the bullets that cut an opening into Sandy Hook Elementary School, resulting in 26 deaths. Instead, that rhythmic singing of steel is a gun barrel. In this case, it’s a non-violent sound, because the gun is being crushed between a blacksmith’s anvil and his hammer. This is what you will witness on Saturday, October 29 at Guns to Gardens.

The Transportation Security Administration at Tampa International Airport is reminding travelers to leave guns at home. They say a total of 64 guns have been stopped by TSA officers so far this year, including 4 guns in one day, at TPA. Other prohibited items TSA officers have stopped in the checkpoint have included stun guns, hand grenades, brass knuckles and martial arts weapons. Passengers bringing firearms – most of which were loaded – has been escalating with more guns stopped already this year than in all of 2015. |

In Wisconsin, it is legal with the proper licensing and training to carry a concealed weapon. People are now able to hide their guns but still carry them on their person. This helps a lot of people feel safer when they are going out in public. However, a lot of places started prohibiting guns on their premises after this law went into effect. This now prohibits people from exercising their right to have their guns on them to help them feel safe when they are out in public. This is not right. |

Guns are an important part of American history, both from a legal and illegal standpoint. From the single action revolvers of the old West to mobsters with Thompson submachine guns, American culture and society have enshrined firearms into our national iconography. They are inherently complicated things, created with the latent potential to protect or to destroy. Beyond our national discussion of gun legislation, the possession of deadly weapons by regular citizens remains a more contested issue. |

A 40-year-old Agoura Hills man is facing charges of making criminal threats against the Islamic Center of Southern California. Los Angeles police announced Tuesday. Mark Lucian Feigin allegedly called the mosque on Sept. 20 and threatened to kill a staff member, said Cmdr. Horace Frank, of the LAPD’s Counter Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau. If you pay even the smallest amount of attention to trends in concealed carry, you’ll know that right now, appendix carry is one of the hottest. For those of you who don’t know, or perhaps are trapped in 1989, appendix carry is where you position your carry gun in the region of your appendix; essentially down the front of your pants. There are tremendous advantages to this carry position, there are some disadvantages and there are quite a few myths, rumors, exaggerations and misunderstandings. |

The Illinois State Rifle Association has endorsed state Rep. Andy Skoog, a Democrat, in his race against Republican Jerry Long. But the group's executive director, Rich Pearson, had nothing critical to say about Long, of Streator, in an interview Monday. Both candidates have expressed similar views on the Second Amendment, which protects the right to bear arms.

Students and teachers have been allowed to carry guns in University of Texas at El Paso classrooms since August 1, 2016. It has been more than two months since Senate Bill 11 went into effect, allowing guns on Texas public universities. Not just anyone can carry guns at UTEP. You have to be 21, with a license to carry, and that gun must be concealed. You should never be able to see it, but qualified students and teachers have been able to carry concealed weapons legally for more than two months.

Talk about getting a bang for your buck. A jewelry store in Texas is having its annual Shotgun Wedding Sale this week. Oh no, it’s not what you’re thinking. Grim-faced grooms-to-be won’t be picking out diamonds for their future brides while equally grim-faced future fathers-in-law hold shotguns to their backs. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Secrecy is the keystone of all tyranny. Not force, but secrecy ... censorship. When any government, or any church, for that matter, undertakes to say to it's subjects, 'This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,' the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything. You cannot conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him." --Robert A. Heinlein, "Revolt in 2100" (Pg. 68-69, Baen Books paperback edition, 1999 printing) |
