On Thursday, Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, proposed the Federal Pilot Officer Act of 2001, which would allow the U.S. attorney general to create a program to certify and train pilots to use lethal weapons to defend their planes.

"To be against concealed-carry by law-abiding citizens is not anti-gun. It is pro-crime. It is time to pass Vermont-styled concealed-carry in the state of Ohio. Should Gov. Taft veto it, it is time to elect a newgovernor. Maybe one who remembers his campaign promises." --Mike Tomblin

"The reason why so many Americans are buying guns and traveling less is because they no longer have confidence in their government's ability to protect them from their enemies...

While no one could visualize the kind of well-planned and coordinated hijackings that led to the destruction of the Twin Towers, it was assumed that our government was aware of the dangers posed by ordinary hijackers. After all, we have the FBI and the CIA to protect us. But they didn't." --Samuel Blumenfeld

While the national media is preoccupied with anthrax and Afghanistan, the wheels of global governance continue to roll. Two important, but unreported, events have occurred since the Sept. 11 tragedy: a Preparatory Committee meeting of the High Level Panel on Financing for Development at the U.N. in New York, and the 9th negotiating session of the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas, meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"The heroic true stories of Jewish resistance fighters who battled the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II are dramatized for the first time in the compelling, four-hour miniseries "Uprising." -- Starting November 4 on NBC.

KABA NOTE: We don't know how accurate this portrayal will be, particularly since it IS NOT the "first dramatization" of the Warsaw Uprising -- see the movie, "The Wall."

The politically muscular National Rifle Association all but endorsed Republican Mark L. Earley for governor yesterday, saying he is "the best candidate" for gun owners and sportsmen.

While not a full embrace of Earley, the NRA's long-awaited pronouncement, nonetheless, is an indication that important constituencies of the Virginia GOP may finally be rallying to Earley's candidacy.

[San Antonio, TX] A seven-point buck was shot and killed after it ran through the glass window of a Northwest Side preschool Thursday morning. Luckily, no children were in that room at the time.

The man who shot the sex-crazed buck owns a moving company next door. "I shot him before he hurt any of the children," he said.

He brought a gun to a preschool? Horrors! Doesn't he know "guns are dangerous", and that "guns and schools don't mix?"

Until the 1950s, federal regulations required commercial pilots to be armed if they were flying planes carrying mail, a holdover from the days when airmail shipments were flown by military pilots. Some 75% of the traveling public supports allowing pilots to carry arms, no doubt with self-fragmenting ammunition than can't pierce a plane's fuselage. But Congress and the Federal Aviation Administration are dragging their feet--and it isn't the first time.
