"Hey, it’s not like shooting stationary targets. This guy was shooting at her, and she showed bravery under fire and put her life on the line. No one can take that from her and she deserves praise."

"So what am I saying? That I could have done better?"

"The city of Phoenix, in an apparently arbitrary move and without formal legal process, has forced CBS Outdoors to tear down 50 illuminated bus-shelter billboards under contract to promote gun safety training for children and their parents."

"A shooting mishap Monday in Kitsap County that left a 23-year-old mom wounded by shotgun pellets after her 4-year-old son managed to load a live round into a semi-auto shotgun lying on her bed is bound to set off a renewed push for 'safe storage' legislation in Olympia when the Legislature convenes in January."

"Safe storage is trophy legislation for the gun prohibition lobby, but as this writer noted in an on-air discussion Tuesday with KOMO’s Ken Schram, we can pass such laws but that doesn’t mean the people at whom such legislation is aimed would obey it. One cannot legislate wisdom or morality, or against stupidity. ..." ...

"Yesterday, we talked about the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV). More specifically, we talked about the real reason for that group's intense hostility to the right to keep and bear arms--as explained in a book co-written by CSGV executive director Josh Horwitz, 'Guns, Democracy, and the Insurrectionist Idea'). Today, we'll look at efforts in that book to debunk what they call one of the 'myths' perpetuated by the 'Insurrectionists' (which are, remember, people who believe that the purpose of the Second Amendment is to protect the people's means to resist tyranny)." ...

Gun Review: Ruger SR40

"When Porsche unveiled the Boxster, the mid-engined sports car was an automotive revelation. Gott in himmel, what a chassis! Unfortunately, the car’s designers were inspired by Dr. Doolittle's Pushmi-pullyu. Worse, the Boxster's 2.7-liter powerplant replaced a vampire's victim as the dictionary definition of anemic. The Sultans of Stuttgart had good solid marketing reasons for creating a gutless wonder, from an understandable desire to suck-in entry level buyers to not stepping on the venerable 911's torquetasic toes. By the time Porsche blessed the Boxster with a proper engine, it was too late. ... The Ruger SR40 is like that: a great gun with a fatal flaw. And one major difference: the SR40 is one handsome son of a gun." ...

"Born from an idea that Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness starts with a warm, belt-fed rifle, Valkryie Armament has reinvented the time-tested model of Eugene Stoner's belt fed conversion into a modern day phoenix . . . We’ve all heard it before…why do you own an 'assault rifle'…why do you need a “scary, black rifle”…why, why, why? Simply put, because you can. "So sayeth Paul Helmke. The President of the Brady Campaign ... made the pro-Stalinist—I mean, pro-government remark whilst in support of proposed changes to the New York City police department’s concealed carry permitting process. This from a man who presumably has never been 'arrested, indicted or convicted for a crime or violation, except minor traffic violations.' ... Oh wait; it doesn’t matter. Helmke doesn’t live in The Big Apple nor carry a gun, presumably. In fact, it really doesn’t matter to anyone else, either, because New York City is already denying concealed carry permits to anyone save celebrities and other politically connected pals. ... "Americans have always liked their guns. And some Americans REALLY like their guns. Whether to hunt, protect their homes or defend themselves from a tyrannical government, many Americans believe that the government has no right to restrict their access to firearms. But those who want to minimize gun violence, Congress, and the Courts have thought otherwise. ... And does the high level of American gun violence (more than 31,000 firearms fatalities in 2006, according to the CDC) mean it is time to reassess an idea that made sense more than 200 years ago?" ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Actually it was 30,896 deaths in 2006, of which more than half (16,883) were suicides and, as numerous studies have shown, firearm availability does not affect suicide rates. So if firearms 'cost' about 14,000 lives a year, what are the benefits of gun ownership? Conservative estimates are that there are one million or more DGUs every year; if 5% of DGUs save a life (and remember, most people do not pull out a gun unless they reasonably believe that their are in immediate danger of death or great bodily harm) then guns save about fifty thousand lives a year. In other words, 3.5 lives are saved for every 1 life lost.

"For many years, I have been a [NRA] member and believed in the message enough to become an endowment member. Last week I was made aware of a situation that I think all NRA members and people who contribute to the NRA should be aware. The NRA has seen fit to make contributions to 53 democrats running for office. You need to remember that the GOP (not all that grand just lesser of evils) needs 39 seats to take the house back. The Democratic Party is the one that brought about all the gun restrictions you now have. ..."
