MI: Gun legislation

Recent legislation introduced in the Michigan House to expand gun rights and peel back regulation is concerning. First I’m not an anti-gun citizen; I am a gun owner, hunter and consider myself a responsible user of firearms. I believe in the Second Amendment but only in part. I believe, along with Anthony Scalia the US Supreme Court Justice who wrote the Second Amendment (Columbia-Heller) decision, “that the rights secured by the Second Amendment are not unlimited.‘

Peeling back regulations allowing the right to carry a concealed or open weapon just about anywhere and by anyone is ridiculous.

Publicly known gun rights activists, Antonia Okafor & Amanda Collins-Johnson, spoke this week at the University of Nevada, Reno. Collins-Johnson was one of three victims of a spree that eventually landed James Biela in prison for life after he was convicted of raping and murdering Brianna Denison in 2009.

The pair spoke to a roomful of nearly a hundred students, community members, public officials and those interested in gun rights.

The focus of the conversation centered on campus carry, conservatism and feminism on college campuses, and other hot-button issues such as firearms and women’s rights.

Collins-Johnson raised the point that had she had her lawfully owned firearm when attacked by Biela, she could have defended herself.

Harbor Fire intern Chief Thomas Sorrentino said the cause of the plant fire remains under investigation.

"Thirty-five years of my life went up in this fire,” Chris Dichter said.

Dichter is the owner of the Pac-Nor Barreling plant, at 99299 Overlook Road in Brookings and the adjacent 10 acre property. The plant manufactures precision rifle barrels.

Dichter made the comment as he watched flames rolling through the plant, which sits in a wooded area just east of Highway 101.

A heavy black and gray plume from the plant fire, Wednesday morning, Oct. 23, could be seen from the surrounding area.

For me, firearms safety tops my list. I know a lot of people say that, but I still see some crazy stuff at the range. I remember one time at a USPSA match, I walked over to the safety barrels to inspect my firearm and holster it. As I walked up, to guys were standing there talking. One guy was on the other side of the barrel. I walked up to the barrel to their right, put my box down and looked at them. One guy was loading his mags while the other guy was looking at his gun pointing all around. I informed them that no ammunition is allowed at the safety barrels. The first thing from the guy's mouth that was loading mags was, why? No one told us we can't. I informed him that he was hereby told. He made a face and walked away

Contests that involve the hunting of predator or furbearing animals like coyotes would be banned under a proposal being considered by Massachusetts wildlife officials. Critics of the contests say they're cruel and that randomly killing coyotes won't prevent conflicts with people, pets or livestock.

History of 17 HMR Ammo

The .17 HMR has impressive ballistics. Bullets weigh between 15.5 grains and 20 grains – ammo this small, propelled by the comparatively large powder loads in the .22 Magnum case, travel at high velocities. Some loads have a muzzle velocity as high as 2,550 feet per second. But even with those high speeds, muzzle energy for this round is only about 250 foot pounds, which is plenty for shooting varmints and targets at long distances.

Despite being a longtime revolver fan, I always experience some trepidation accepting writing assignments to review small, lightweight, magnum revolvers. Simply put, heavy recoil inflicts a lot more punishment on the shooter than a missed shot inflicts on the attacker, and heavy recoil can definitely cause misses.

Maine state legislators just did something that gives some encouragement to Second Amendment activists across the country: They said “no” to Moms Demand Action and the gun prohibition lobby in the nation’s Northeast.

According to the Portland Press Herald, “Leaders of the Maine Legislature voted against allowing seven gun-related bills to be introduced in the next legislative session.” Predictably, anti-gunners are an unhappy lot, with Nacole Palmer, described as a volunteer with the Maine chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America declaring, “Every other day, a person in Maine dies from a gunshot, meanwhile a small group of legislators blocked gun safety legislation from even being discussed in 2020.”

Introduced Wednesday, the bill would modify the state’s laws on when someone can use deadly force when they believe they are at risk.

When two mass murderers struck in early August, taking at least 31 lives, many in the mainstream media blamed guns and your freedom for the carnage, not “mentally ill monsters,” as President Donald J. Trump called them. The notion that mental illness shouldn’t even be discussed as part of a remedy has been pushed by people such as former Rep. Tony Coelho (D-Calif.). When he served in the U.S. House of Representatives, Coelho helped write the Americans with Disabilities Act. In an opinion piece in The Hill in August, Coelho wrote, “Whether based on ignorance, discrimination or hate, the belief that ending gun violence can occur by targeting people with mental illness is wrong and a counterproductive red herring.”

Chris Parker is the type of Virginian whom Democrats hope to get to the polls next month to help them flip the legislature and usher in a wave of stricter gun laws. Parker leans Democratic and believes there “definitely” needs to be more gun control, including limits on military-style assault weapons. And he has a personal connection to one of the state’s most deadly mass shootings. As a construction contractor, Parker’s work used to take him to the Virginia Beach municipal building where a gunman killed a dozen people this summer, though he doesn’t know anyone who was shot.

Maine's young hunters are kicking off the state's season for deer with the annual Youth Deer Day. The state allows the younger set to take bucks all over Maine on Saturday. It's also legal for young hunters to take antlerless deer in most wildlife management districts. As in most years, Youth Deer Day precedes the regular firearms season for deer, which runs from Nov. 4 to Nov. 30. Monday also marks the beginning of the hunt for antlerless moose in far northern Maine. That season concludes on Nov. 2 and is followed by the "any moose" hunt in parts of central and western Maine from Nov. 4 to Nov. 30.

The Truth About Good Guys With Guns

So how many times a day do firearms in the hands of good guys and gals save lives? Though the data suggests this happens a lot more than the media will report, it is a difficult thing to measure. Part of the reason is crimes that are avoided often go unreported. Also, no law-enforcement agency tracks the positive uses of firearms or attempts to calculate the number of lives saved. Part of the reason for this is that it’s difficult to calculate what might have happened. Another is that police departments are tasked with solving crimes, not with doing research on what actually prevents crimes.

On October 18th, law-abiding gun owners won a major victory when the Washington Superior Court granted a motion for summary judgment against the City of Edmonds for violating the state’s preemption statute. This win invalidates the mandatory firearm storage ordinance passed by the City Council, and constitutes a victory for freedom and the Second Amendment.

Hunting: When is it the Best Time to Hunt Deer

The world of deer hunting is rife with debate: 30-06 vs .270, tracking vs treestands, morning vs afternoon. Perhaps less a debate and more a true search for answers involves determining the best dates to deer hunt. Not surprisingly, the answer is not simple. To avoid myriad more variables, let’s stick strictly to the regular firearms season, as that represents the greatest contingent of deer hunters. With certain minor variations from year to year based on how seasons align with the calendar, that basically means the month of November.
