Yet, of all the GOP candidates, it could be argued that Paul is the strongest when it comes to his pro-life position. A former Air Force doctor, he says he's rarely seen any need to terminate a pregnancy for the life of the mother. And on the gun issue, he is predictable, which is refreshing with tortured logic reining among other candidates like Rudy Giuiliani: if the Constitution allows for the right to bear arms, that's all the Congressman from southeast Texas needs to know. |

Witnesses said the shooting was preceded by a fight inside the shooter's car. Three observers on Cartier Street said they saw four men beat the driver, who later grabbed a weapon from the center console and warned, "I've got a gun."
"It was self-defense," said Mike Albert, 16, who watched the skirmish unfold from his mother's third-floor balcony. |

When Eastern Europe broke free in 1989, we all realized just how little thought had been given to the transition from socialism to capitalism. Mises had told us the collapse was coming, and we should have been prepared.
As America comes to resemble a command economy, we need a transition plan here too. Yuri Maltsev proposed a "One-Year Plan" for the U.S.S.R. We're not in that bad a shape (yet), so we could do it in 30 days |

Paul Cray reflects only a second before concluding his confidence amounts to arrogance. But in sports, that's not necessarily a bad thing. "Maybe it doesn't translate to you being a better human being but it makes you win stuff," he explained. And win stuff Cray certainly has. The 40-year-old professional musician, a resident of Salt Point, captured the World Field Target Federation's pre-charged pneumatic rifle class title last Sunday in Tennessee, four months after winning the American Airgun Field Target Association Nationals in that class and just nine months after making the transition from shooting in the piston class, where he'd won two U.S. National titles. |

Canada formally asked the United States on Thursday to remove former Canadian terror suspect Maher Arar from its no-fly list -- a day after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice publicly admitted Washington bungled the case.
Rice suggested yesterday that Arar would remain on U.S. security watch lists -- despite the admission that U.S. officials mishandled the case and despite a Canadian inquiry which cleared Arar of any links to terrorism. --------- Get on a US government list, stay on a US government list. Are you paying attention, Mr. LaPierre?

NFL teams don't usually take stands on controversial issues, so it was a little surprising to look at the Chicago Bears' official web site today and see that the main headline is "Harris on a Mission to Stop Gun Violence." The accompanying article, about Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris, says he was moved to act after watching TV news accounts of Chicago Public School students who were shot and killed. |

Despite assurances from local police and the Town Board, one resident remains concerned about a police shooting range behind the town highway garage on Route 20. At a Town Board meeting earlier this month, resident Tim Plante said he received information from the police department that they planned to conduct target practice the last two weeks of September and all this month. Mr. Plante, who owns three parcels in the area including a 12-unit apartment building, said the shooting lasts until 9 p.m. making it difficult to sleep. He is also worried for the safety of his children and others, saying there are no signs in the area saying there is a firing range nearby, or any other safety measures. |

Albany Police Department officials wrote a letter to the federal government four years ago saying the department had lost 12 machine guns that were part of an arsenal of assault weapons illegally purchased by dozens of officers in the mid-1990s. The letter, which was sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Washington, D.C., was signed by then-Police Chief Robert Wolfgang. A copy was recently shared with the Times Union by a source with access to the department's records. |

A 75-year-old man who shot an intruder later told officials he did so despite being legally blind. The intruder, an acquaintance, is being charged with burglary and battery. Police say 28-year-old Cevaughn Curtis Jr. knocked on the door of Arthur Williams' home around 3 a.m. Friday and asked to be let inside. When Williams refused, police say Curtis pushed the door in anyway. Williams went into his bedroom, called 911 and then shot Curtis in the neck, said Sgt. Barry Kays of the Gainesville Police Department. |

During a town hall meeting in northwestern New Hampshire last week, presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani told a former police office: "You have a constitutional right, that is protected, to bear and carry arms. It is the Second Amendment. If someone disagrees with that, you have to get the Constitution changed."
Since Mr. Giuliani is a former federal prosecutor and these individuals' knowledge of the Constitution appears to be limited to reading court cases, the author decided to use a United States Supreme Court case to show perspective[sic] voters, who care about gun rights, that Giuliani is totally ignorant of the nature of the Second Amendment. |

The Gem State, eager to attract new jobs and industry, is positioning itself as the best possible home for the nation's 200 small arms manufacturers - companies worth a collective $2 billion per year but unwelcome in many of the states that have long been their home.
"Like any smart business, gun manufacturers are looking for places that facilitate low operational costs, such as business taxes, utility costs and a good place for employees to live," said Richard Schelowitz, an analyst for AFC, which monitors the firearms industry.
"But unlike some businesses, this industry is also growing weary of regulations and public perceptions that might make it more difficult - and therefore more costly - to do business." |
