"Just in time for Halloween, the press is telling spooky stories about the Oath Keepers, an organization of current and former soldiers and cops who have sworn to refuse unconstitutional orders. The latest scare piece to cross my screen appeared this week in Alternet under the headline 'Right-Wing Extremist Group on Active Military Duty?' The author, Rob Waters of the Southern Poverty Law Center, jumps directly from describing the organization to writing this:""In July, the SPLC also presented Congress with growing evidence that extremists are infiltrating the U.S. military and urged Congress and the military to take steps to ensure that the armed forces are not inadvertently training future domestic terrorists." ... |

... "Still, I'm not trying to pick on hunters. In fact, the point of today's piece is to discuss the wonderful work hunters do in feeding the poor. Just such an effort is discussed here:"
"Since 1999, the Venison Donation Coalition has been highly successful in its goal to feed the hungry throughout New York state. They have processed 337.51 tons of highly nutritious venison or the equivalent of 2,700,800 meals served. ..."
"That's just in one state (not among the biggest deer hunting states, either), through the good works of one organization. ..."
"To some, though, feeding the hungry isn't as important as pursuing an agenda of putting up roadblocks in front of gun ownership and use." ... |

"Most states issue permits to carry a concealed handgun for lawful protection to an applicant who is over 21 years of age, and who passes a fingerprint-based background check and a safety class. These permits allow the person to carry a concealed defensive handgun almost everywhere in the state. Should professors, school teachers, or adult college and graduate students who have such permits be allowed to carry firearms on campus?"
"In the last two years, many state legislatures have debated the topic. School boards, regents, and administrators are likewise faced with decisions about whether to change campus firearms policies." ... |

"The Philosophy, Science, and Fallacy of Gun Law"
"Every species on planet earth needs a strategy for its own defense. These strategies come in many forms such as camouflage, flight, speed, venom, and spines as well as many others. The strategy for man uses his cognitive brain or his process of thought. ... An outgrowth of this ability is the phenomena of worry. ..."
"Misplaced worry is the problem. Anti-gun advocates and their politicians want to stop crime. They make the speculative connection that criminals use guns to commit crime, and therefore, to stop crime you must eliminate guns. They worry that as long as there are guns there will be crime ..." ...

"A New Jersey appeals court has concluded that Americans have no Second Amendment right to buy a handgun."
"In a case decided last week, the superior court upheld a state law saying that nobody may possess 'any handgun' without obtaining law enforcement approval and permission in advance."

In it I suggested that, while training in the safe, legal, and appropriate use of firearms is strongly supported and should continue to be encouraged, government mandated training is anathema to liberty. QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As an individual, I believe, very strongly, that handguns should be banned and that there should be stringent, effective control of other firearms. However, as a judge, I know full well that the question of whether handguns can be sold is a political one, not an issue of products liability law, and that this is a matter for the legislatures, not the courts. The unconventional theories advanced in this case (and others) are totally without merit, a misuse of products liability laws. — Judge Buchmeyer, Patterson v. Gesellschaft, 1206 F.Supp. 1206, 1216 (N.D. Tex. 1985) |
