The fact that both District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago were decided 5-4, rather than 9-0, remains one of the greatest outrages in recent judicial history. Had a single vote gone the other way, the Supreme Court of the United States would have taken it upon itself not merely to render as a dead letter one of the sacred measures within the Constitution’s Bill of Rights, but to rewrite American history in concert.

Bill Nelson and Rick Scott disagreed Tuesday over how to limit gun violence during a contentious exchange during the first debate of Florida’s U.S. Senate race. Nelson, the incumbent Democrat, described himself as a champion of the kinds of gun restrictions he said could reduce gun violence — and that polling shows the public wants. Scott, the current governor and Republican candidate for the Senate seat, described himself as a backer of gun rights and an advocate of keeping guns away from dangerous people.

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson was the guest of honor at Tuesday’s regular Rotary Club lunch event, which was relocated to the Edmonds Theater to accommodate a larger-than-usual audience. “This is my 331st Rotary address,” began Ferguson. “I love speaking to Rotary clubs because, even though I’m not a Rotarian myself, we’re in the same business — service to our community. Everyone in my office could make more money working for a private firm, but all are committed to serving the people of the State of Washington. We’re in service to you.” |

Predictably, the anti-gun majority of Washington State’s King County Council voted Monday to adopt a new “safe storage” requirement for gun owners, likely in violation of the state’s 35-year-old preemption statute, but some pro-rights activists in the firearms community are quietly wondering if this isn’t a signal that the preemption law could be in jeopardy if Democrats take stronger control of the Legislature in 2019. |

An alleged sexual assault from 36 years ago is not why Democrats and the mainstream media are doing all they can to stop a confirmation vote for Judge Brett Kavanaugh. It all really comes down to future U.S. Supreme Court rulings, including potential Second Amendment cases. During Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who was then sitting on the letter from Christine Blasey Ford, asked Kavanaugh why he ruled that modern sporting rifles (she used the opaque political term “assault weapon”) were in common use and therefore are protected by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Sen. John Kennedy R-La., introduced legislation Tuesday to prohibit federal contracts with banks that end business with other lawful businesses over social policy. The topic became a hot button issue last spring when Bank of America and Citigroup announced that they would end banking relationships with gun manufacturers or retailers that sold certain semi-automatic weapons similar to ones used in mass shootings of civilians. |

The gun safety measures passed by King County Council yesterday are drawing the ire of Washington’s gun rights yokels. The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) based in fucking Bellevue is gearing up for another lawsuit. SAF and the National Rifle Association (NRA) are currently jointly suing both Seattle and Edmonds for safe storage laws passed this summer. Those laws are nearly identical to the one passed yesterday by King County. |

Hutsonville, Illinois, school superintendent Julie Kraemer became a cop so she could carry a gun at school and protect her students. Time reports that Kraemer’s district lacked “the budget to hire a full-time school resource officer,” so she decided to become an officer in order to carry a gun with her on campus at no cost to the school. She started the police academy in January and graduated on September 22. |

Most people under 21 won't be able to buy guns in California starting next year under a law Gov. Jerry Brown announced signing Friday. It will prevent people under 21 from buying rifles and other types of guns. State law already bans people under 21 from buying handguns. The new law exempts law enforcement, members of the military and people with hunting licenses from the restriction. It was one of dozens of bills Brown took action on. |

When the clock struck midnight on September 30th, 2018, Governor Jerry Brown made the last legislative decisions of his political career and left his mark as a solid anti-gun politician who was willing to throw us a bone now and again. This year was no different, as he stepped firmly into the anti-gun muck with the signing of bills to prohibit the sale of firearms to anyone under 21 and increased training before anyone can get a CCW. But he vetoed some bad ones, too – he rejected banning gun shows at the Cow Palace as well as the bill to put limitations on how many long guns we can guy per month.

A proposed initiative on the November ballot would make some sensible improvements to Washington state gun laws and save lives. Voters should say yes to Initiative 1639. The proposal would raise the minimum purchase age from 18 to 21 for semi-automatic rifles, establish new safe-storage rules and require safety training before buying any kind of gun or rifle.

We sometimes hear about, or actually witness, the consequences of a blown-out case. In semi-automatic pistols, the case usually ruptures on the underside where it does not have complete chamber support because of the cutout of the feed ramp. Thus, the gas pressure is generally directed mostly downward. The magazine, and any rounds still in it at the time, usually get the brunt of the blast force.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? — Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836 |
