St. Paul mayoral candidate Melvin Carter said Saturday it has been a difficult week, after a mailer went out implying guns stolen from his home were directly tied to a rise in gun crime in the city. A political action committee backed by the St. Paul Police Federation sent the mailer. It followed a letter sent publicly Tuesday by the federation, which also criticized Carter after his home was burglarized and two guns were stolen. |

A U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals panel on Thursday rejected a lawsuit challenging Washington State’s Initiative 594 requiring so-called “universal background checks,” but the ruling came only after the State Legislature had amended provisions in the law about when such checks are required.
That fact was specifically noted in the four-page decision, which was unanimous. The three-judge panel consisted of one Barack Obama appointee, one Bill Clinton appointee and one George W. Bush appointee |

There is too much violence in America – gun violence in particular. The mass murders in Las Vegas brought the gun control debate to renewed prominence. There are between 12,000 and 13,000 gun deaths from homicide and accidents each year in the U.S. That’s tragic. How can we reduce those numbers? I’m neither a gun enthusiast and passionate Second Amendment supporter nor a frantic gun control crusader. I own no firearms. This commentary reflects some of my preparation for listening to and evaluating the inevitable debate in Congress. |

State Sen. Linda Stewart (D-Orlando) is pushing to make bump stock possession a third-degree felony in the state of Florida. Her push comes after gun control for bump stocks fizzled out at the federal level. According to TC Palm, Stewart’s gun control would make bump stock possession a felony that is “punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine up to $5,000.” |

I would like to respond to Mr. Joseph Henry Wythe’s letter from the Oct. 12 edition. Mr. Wythe makes many capricious claims that cannot be left unchallenged. First, Mr. Wythe claims an overwhelming majority of citizens are in favor of gun control. This is typical liberal spin. When asked blanket survey questions about reducing gun violence, of course the majority of people agree that we should work to prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries. But there is no evidence that the majority of people believe gun control is the way to achieve this.

I have a point of view. I used to think that gun laws stopped crime and made us safer. I would read about some violent attack and think that more regulation would stop the next criminal. Now, I’ve studied some of our 23 thousand firearms regulations. That is when I changed my mind. Now I see a violent crime as another failure of the many gun control laws we already have. Gun laws don’t work, and we can’t achieve safety by piling more regulations on honest people.

The small game season opens statewide on Friday. While I was in high school, this special day was treated as almost a holiday around here. In fact, the only four days of high school that I ever missed were not because of being sick, but the opening day of hunting season each year — with a signed pass from the principal in my pocket. Back then, hunting season meant pheasant and rabbit season. An army of Elmer Fudd’s stomped through about every harvested corn field and fallow weed patch around to find some rabbits and pheasants for the pot.

Nearly 60 percent of guns recovered in Chicago come from out-of-state dealers, with more than 20 percent traced back to Indiana, according to a newly-released report. The Chicago Police Department, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the University of Chicago Crime Lab unveiled Sunday the findings of their 2017 Gun Trace Report, a study that analyzed crimes between 2013 and 2016 to better understand where guns in Chicago come from, and to develop impactful solutions to address the root causes of the city's violence. |

The Huron Valley Guns facility in New Hudson trains law enforcement members for emergencies.
The 100-yard shooting range includes realistic training scenarios. There are red and blue flashing lights, and the range can mimic night conditions to prepare police for dark situations.
"In the real world you're going to be attacked out and about, not standing in a booth shooting a target," assistant range manager Steve Cheston said.
The $6 million facility has more than two dozen training programs that challenge instincts and reflexes.
"When adrenaline is going, you revert to instincts. You revert back to your training. That's why a facility like this is a blessing for us," Milford Police Chief Thomas Lindberg said.

Last year, California’s Legislature and voters enacted a veritable blizzard of legislation making private gun ownership more difficult and expensive, including new restrictions on magazine capacity and ammunition sales. Gov. Jerry Brown rejected some of the anti-gun bills sent to his desk. Nevertheless, the political crusade against guns was so intense that surrogates for two of the state’s leading politicians, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León, exchanged fusillades of harsh words as the two vied for political command of the anti-gun movement. |
