Cabela’s (CAB) reported strong demand for guns and shooting accessories during the third quarter, reflecting an industry-wide surge during a presidential election year. The outdoor retailer, which recently agreed to a takeover by rival Bass Pro Shops, said Wednesday sales at Cabela’s stores open at least a year fell 2.3% in the quarter. But Cabela’s saw positive sales trends for firearms and shooting-related categories, such as ammunition. Optics, like rifle scopes, also flew off the shelves.

I joined the NRA when I was 15, and I took to college a typewriter, record player and Ithaca 12-gauge shotgun. I shot my first deer two years later. I admire Maine’s hunting traditions and gun culture that are basic Maine values. But I believe that opposing sensible gun laws is the greatest threat to the future of those traditions.

The last time voters in Maine were asked about gun rights, they easily passed a constitutional amendment creating a right to own firearms that “shall never be questioned.” Three decades later, the state known for its hunting tradition will vote on whether to tighten restrictions on gun sales and transfers. Maine is one of four states, along with California, Nevada and Washington, where voters will decide Nov. 8 whether to enact tougher firearms laws. In a change from past elections, there are no statewide initiatives seeking to expand gun rights anywhere in the U.S.

The Tucson Police Department has destroyed 4,820 guns turned in by residents or seized from crime investigations since the beginning of 2013, city records show. The figure is at the heart of a complaint made by state Rep. Mark Finchem, who is arguing Tucson is violating a 2013 Arizona law that requires the sales of otherwise legal guns obtained by law enforcement agencies.

This is in response to your Post Journal Oct.26 front page article by A.J.Rao. Your article basically says that our neighboring States need stricter gun laws. In the article Mr. Rao says that between 2010-2015 there were 153 guns recovered in Chautauqua County. However your article fails to mention how many of these guns were actually purchased legally. Your opening sentence states that 55 stolen guns were recovered. The guns were stolen from a string of gun shop burglaries in Pennsylvania.

So KGW's investigative team sent letters to 86 inmates currently serving time for burglary in the Oregon Department of Corrections. The inmates were asked to respond anonymously to 17 questions detailing how they broke in, when the crime occurred and what they were looking for.

Law enforcement agencies across the Midlands received special training Sunday on the use of deadly force. The training was part of "Operation Blue", where police officers are given free advanced training in the use of their carbines and handguns. "There are officers out there that are getting once a year training.. and that's not enough," said Fernando Coelho, who hosted the event. He says there is not enough firearm training for the people who carry guns every day.

We aren’t toggling “whine” mode on exactly, but we are giving a little time to two pistols we don’t see very often at the range. Not only are both practical, soft and inexpensive-shooting rimfires that borrow on famed, Olympic-grade excellence, but they are so good in other respects that ignoring them borders on an outright mistake.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Let us contemplate our forefathers, and posterity, and resolve to maintain the rights bequeathed to us from the former, for the sake of the latter. The necessity of the times, more than ever, calls for our utmost circumspection, deliberation, fortitude, and perseverance. Let us remember that `if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom.' It is a very serious consideration...that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event." --Samuel Adams, speech in Boston, 1771 |
