In 1855, a clothing manufacturer named Oliver Winchester became the largest stockholder of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, which was developing the Volcanic Lever Action Rifle. The rifle had only limited success and the company fell into bankruptcy. Oliver Winchester and his partner, John M. Davies, purchased the company's assets and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Company in April 1857.

I wrote about the Las Vegas murderer who shot into a crowd at a country music festival. The facts are not in. I said that anti-rights activists and politicians would call for our disarmament even before the facts were known. I reminded you that being a disarmed citizen is dangerous. That is a fact, not speculation.
My statements anticipating the reaction of our political elites are closer to certainties than predictions. I’m not willing to wait a “respectful interval” while I am condemned by political elites. I will not sit in silence.
You shouldn’t either. |

As the House Majority Whip, Scalise is one of the top leaders in Congress who can count on armed bodyguards for protection. Scalise credits his security team with saving his life in June, by killing the gunman who attacked him at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia. That’s one reason Scalise says he’s against any kind of new legislation that would limit a person’s ability to carry a gun. |

In the wake of mass shootings, the conversation often revolves around restricting access to firearms. Here in North Dakota, many lawmakers say the issue is not the guns themselves, rather the person pulling the trigger. “North Dakota is very much in favor of protecting the second amendment” said Rep. Rick Becker, R-Bismarck, “That's going to be unchanged, because we can’t change the fact that mental illness exists, and will continue to exist. We can’t change the fact that hateful ideologies exist.” |

Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, prolific train burglar Andrew Shelton understood firsthand the carnage caused by illegal guns. When he was just 16, Shelton, a former Gangster Disciples gang member, shot three people and was sentenced to four years in prison, court records show. He survived three separate shootings himself in the 1990s, including a carjacking in which he was shot nine times. And Shelton’s father was slain in a drive-by shooting in 2001. |

Fifteen years ago this week, “Bowling for Columbine” opened in theaters. At the time, there’d never really been an event like Columbine before. Those of us who worked on the film thought we should do it because of the availability of guns, and the phenomenon of guns ending up in the hands of the wrong people, guns in the hands of people who are afraid and take their fear to an exaggerated place. We were afraid it would become the new normal, and wanted to warn people that perhaps our country had taken a turn. |

With a shower of gunfire from the 32nd floor of a hotel, the massacre in Las Vegas quickly became incomprehensible in its magnitude - even for someone like Mark Bryant, who works every day to catalog shootings across the country. "This one," he said, sighing - "this one is just not good. This is going to change a lot of things. Like 9/11 changed the way we did a lot of things, this has the potential to change a lot of the way we do things." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Resistance to sudden violence, for the preservation not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property, is an indisputable right of nature which I have never surrendered to the public by the compact of society, and which perhaps, I could not surrender if I would. — JOHN ADAMS |
