Since the attack, there's been a surge in cell phone sales, but the service has its limits. "Generally people wanted piece of mind," said Graeme Kelly of Parrot Cellular. "That's what cell phones can do."
911 dispatchers worry that increased cell phone use will contribute to more unintentional and non-emergency calls. Already, more than 60% of all calls are not real emergencies.

A self-defense expert in San Antonio said that if more Americans were trained in martial arts, the terrorist attacks in September might have been prevented. "A lot of lives could have been saved just by one person taking the box cutter away from a terrorist," said Mark Wood of Universal Karate Studio. "I know it seems simple, but one person can make a difference."

"Few if any Americans gave thought to the fact that the September 11th attack upon our nation occurred on the date designated by the United Nations as the "International Day of Peace."
Those who were aware of this tragic coincidence were probably inspired to reflect bitterly upon the uselessness of the UN as a means of achieving the peace that all decent people seek." --William Norman Grigg, The New American |

The basement in Prisco Community Center has so much environmentally unsafe lead dust that it will be closed for about two months while it's cleaned.
In the basement, JMS found elevated levels of lead dust in the area occupied by a shooting range, which has been used by the Auroraland Rifle & Pistol Club for decades, and in adjacent areas. No detectable lead dust contamination in any other part of the 35,000-square-foot building. |

"Our enemies know what they believe. They're willing to kill for it. And, more importantly, they're willing to die for it.
Are the young men and women who may be called on to defend our civilization willing to make the same sacrifice? ... If liberty had to depend on most of the young people I spoke to in Washington Square Park the other day, we'd all be answering to Osama by Christmas." --ROD DREHER |

Eliza Gauger, 17-year-old from Bellingham WA, sketched a picture titled "Mommy Liberty," the day after the terrorist attacks. What took 5 minutes to design has become a national phenomenon. Criticism has been rare, and is usually related to the gun she is holding.
"Someone from the National Guard emailed me and said he wanted to use the image in a newsletter but couldn't print it if it had a gun in it, and asked if I could change it to a sword." But Eliza refused. |

Although President Bush is not yet convinced that airline pilots should be armed, polls show the public supports the idea by nearly 70% and airline pilots by at least that much.
"Arming" could involve a range of possible weapons and systems that can be safe when operated by trained crews, and at no risk of puncturing the aircraft’s hull and windows and causing explosive decompression of the passenger cabin. |
