For more than two decades, some Washington officials have pushed for laws intended to reduce gun deaths by making firearms more secure at home.
Those efforts — from an unsuccessful ballot initiative in 1997, to legislation sponsored year after year at the state Legislature — never came anywhere near to becoming law.
But 2018 has become a consequential year for so-called safe-storage laws. |

As we continue to see concealed carry expand, it is natural to see it grow in all areas. The majority of those who carry concealed are not your “tacticool” guy or girl. They are the everyday armed citizen, many whose workplace makes it challenging to carry concealed. I have been fortunate to work with not only professionals who must carry in the performance of their duties, but professionals who choose to be armed in their workplace. Those who choose to be armed must confront several obstacles: Non-permissive environments, long-term sustainability and wardrobe selection, to name a few. |

The NRA has spent less than half the $3.6 million laid out this year by the gun safety political action committee #Giffords PAC, created by former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in 2011 at a constituent meeting in a Tucson suburb. Everytown for Gun Safety, a group founded by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has spent just under $1.5 million so far, nearly matching the NRA. |

Chris W. Cox, executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action, today released the following statement in response to Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s decision to vote against the confirmation of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee:
"Today, Heidi Heitkamp put partisan politics above the rights of law-abiding North Dakota gun owners. Right now, the U.S. Supreme Court is split 4-4 on the basic right to keep a firearm in the home for self-defense. Therefore, a vote against confirming Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is a vote against the fundamental right to self-defense.” |

She does not support teachers having guns in the classroom.
"It honestly couldn't be a worse idea for a lot of different reasons," Houlahan added. "The idea that I would be able to safely manage that weapon, I think, is impossible. In my classroom, within a year I had my cellphone taken a couple of times."
Houlahan is in favor of closing closing the gun show loophole, restrictions on firing high capacity magazines, universal background checks and renewing the federal assault weapons ban. |

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, in fact, proposed legislation that would have restricted not only American citizens on faulty watchlists but anyone who had been on any watchlist at any time during the previous five years and anyone who had traveled to select Middle Eastern countries. Apparently, Democrats believe limiting the number of refugees from Syria is unconstitutional but explicitly restricting the constitutional rights of Syrian immigrants here legally is just fine. |

The heart of the controversy is clear — whether government (in this case, state government, not Uncle Sam) can prohibit a company from making software instructions for firearms parts available to the public. So-called “3-D firearms.”
It is common knowledge that the internet is replete with instructions to manufacture all manner of items big and small – from jet engines to paper airplanes; printing presses to children’s coloring books. Just google “DIY” (“Do It Yourself” for old schoolers), and every conceivable item or device is there for the looking. Want to learn how to disassemble/assemble a bolt-action hunting rifle or a 9mm handgun? Google it. |

So how do voters find the rating for candidates in their particular district or state? If you are an NRA member, the candidate grades are printed in the NRA magazine that is mailed out in the weeks ahead of an election. But it’s a lot harder to find candidates’ grades if you are not a member.
The NRA Political Victory Fund website allows voters to search for grades and endorsements, but they don’t automatically pop up. Voters are required to select a state and enter an address.
The NRA website will then display candidates’ grade related to the U.S. House, state house, state senate and statewide races associated with the address. |

Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor pledged this week to sign a pending state law increasing the mandatory surrender of guns in some domestic situations.
The measure that Gov. Tom Wolf is backing, HB 2060, was approved 131-62 by the Pennsylvania House last week and 43-5 by the Senate on Wednesday. The aim of the proposal is to pump up the existing surrender gun policy of convicted abusers in the Commonwealth and the Democrat vowed to sign it as soon as it hits his desk. |

A federal judge restored the rights of a Pennsylvania man on Friday after determining that his misdemeanor driving under the influence convictions were not serious enough to justify a lifelong restriction on his Second Amendment rights.
Chief Judge Christopher Conner of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania ruled that Raymond Holloway's second misdemeanor DUI conviction in 2005 was not a serious enough crime to result in a lifetime abridgment of one of his constitutional rights. |

A man found dead floating in the mangroves off Marathon last Friday morning died from stab wounds he received the night before while he brutally attacked a woman with a machete, police say.
The woman, Crystal Marie Young, 45, will likely not be charged in the death of Gustavo Torna Aguado, 58, because Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detectives say it appears to be a case of self defense.
Young told police Torna Aguado attacked her on board her sailboat moored in Boot Key Harbor Thursday night, Sept. 27. |
