The .380 ACP Made Better: Federal Hydra-Shok Deep & Punch Handgun Ammo

When I was working as a patrol officer, I responded to a shooting on a city street, where a physically disabled man had been attacked by another man. The disabled person shot the attacker with a .380, and the attacker was found dead on the scene; he succumbed to a single .380 ACP gunshot wound to the torso. The bullet was a full metal jacket. I mention this because it addresses the question of whether the .380 ACP can be successfully used as a self-defense handgun.

A concept that has emerged in the past couple of years is that of a “backpack gun,” meaning a collapsing and highly compact firearm that can be stowed in a backpack for fast deployment in case a concealed pistol is no longer enough medicine, so to speak. The concept has been around for a few years and some people are actually starting to take it seriously, which they shouldn’t. If you’ve been thinking about getting one, this is for you.

When Sturm, Ruger & Company’s bid on the assets and property of Marlin was accepted earlier this month, it represented a new day for the guns made by the company founded by John Mahlon Marlin 1870. This wasn’t Marlin’s first trip to the auction block. Marlin Firearms was in financial trouble and put on the block at a sheriff’s auction on Feb. 4, 1924. The property of the Marlin Firearm Corp. in New Haven, Conn., went for $100. The auction was said to be attended by “several curious children, a small dog and a lawyer named Frank Kenna.” He was the only bidder, but he also assumed the mortgage, which was $95,000, quite a considerable sum in those days. The Kenna family would own the company through war and peace from that time until 2010.

Last Thursday, Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) and Firearms Policy Foundation (FPF) announced the filing of an important brief with the United States Supreme Court in support of a Petition for Writ of Certiorari in the case of Torres v. the United States. FPC’s brief contains authoritative research showing that the federal ban on firearm possession by nonviolent felons is unconstitutional and not historically supported. It is available online at FPCLegal.org.

Designed for handgun hunters, the .460 S&W is possibly the most versatile and powerful revolver option available, not only in America, but throughout the world. This ammo is big. It’s powerful. And it’s the fastest revolver cartridge ever made.

The .460 S&W features a heavy, .452-inch diameter tipped bullet that sits in a rimmed, straight-walled case. The average bullet weighs 300 grain (gr), but factory loads can be found with bullet weights ranging from 200 gr through a massive 395 gr.

Biden’s Overpowering Urge to ‘Do Something’ About Guns, Whatever the Facts May Be

One part of the 1994 crime bill that Biden definitely does not regret is the federal ban on semi-automatic guns that Congress described as “assault weapons,” which expired in 2004. Biden favors a new and supposedly improved version of that law, including a requirement that current owners of the targeted firearms either surrender them to the government or follow the same tax and registration requirements that apply to machine guns. During an argument with a Detroit autoworker in March, Biden suggested that the Second Amendment no more protects the right to own guns he does not like than the First Amendment protects the right to falsely cry “Fire!” in a crowded theater.

In 1969, the decision-makers at Colt Firearms had to face facts. The company had survived WWII with mountains of 1911A1 pistols for the government then made it through the '50s with an elegant new .357 called the Python, as well as an equally elegant return of the Peacemaker. It had also managed to return the best of the pre-war revolvers, dropping the huge New Services and tiny Pocket Positives. Along with updated semi-autos like the Gold Cup (.45s and .38s) and Match Target Woodsman, it was a product line focused strongly on high-quality fit-and-finish and match-grade accuracy.

When it comes to AKs, I'm a practical purist; I prefer mil-spec furniture, but can appreciate the functionality of modernized guns like the PSAK-47 GF4. So I wasn't as excited to put rounds through it as I was the new PSAK-103 or PSAK-74. That all changed the second I had a chance to get behind the gun and sling some lead.

Anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety “isn’t feeling the courage of their purported convictions these days,” according to the National Rifle Association, which has zeroed in on political advertisements in several “swing” states that “have nothing to do with firearms.”

With the election just one month away, and the announcement that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have both tested positive for the coronavirus, there is no telling how the well-financed gun prohibition lobby may try to exploit that news. Already, vehemently anti-gun House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to capitalize on the news, raising “concerns” about the reliability of testing at the White House.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of men and women. — Thomas Paine, The Crisis, Intro. (Dec. 1776).
