According to this report, the husband "was unaware there was a shell in one of the shotguns while he was cleaning it and the gun went off and hit his wife in the chest."
There are no "gun accidents." He should be charged with murder. Anyone stupid enough to "accidentally" blow a hole in his wife's chest is too stupid to be among the free. Lock him away. |

"Little Kristin's hazel eyes were as big as saucers and began to fill with tears as she stood there, spread-eagle, while some stranger frisked up and down her little body. I hovered close by with a weak, forced smile, in a lousy attempt to reassure my daughter while at the same time trying to hold back my anger over the absurd situation. I could do nothing to stop this groping of my little 9-year-old girl – we were in the Atlanta airport trying to catch a plane to my grandmother's funeral."

Typical "gun show loophole" stuff... but on a well-known tech site.
"A well-known exception in federal gun control law commonly known as the "gun show loophole" can allow, for example, foreign tourists to walk into a gun show in 32 states and buy weapons with cash, no questions asked.
Nowhere in the Bush administration's fledgling anti-terror legislation does it address this issue."

"Americans are also re-evaluating what role the government should play following the crisis and far it should step. Seventy percent of Americans now support national identity cards. More than half say they'd sacrifice some civil liberties to prevent future attacks."

Bryan, TX: The board has discussed the idea of security cameras for the past year after 1/3 of Bryan High teachers signed a petition saying they felt unsafe on the campus.
Cameras were one of the measures directly requested by the teachers to improve school safety, [school board President] Ramirez noted after the meeting.
But the $210,088 price tag is giving some trustees pause about the benefits of installing a video surveillance system. |

An entire section of Nebraska law passed following World War II deals with Americanism and the duty of schools to teach lyrics to patriotic songs, reverence for the flag, and the dangers of Communism.
"Making students memorize the lyrics to the Star-Spangled Banner is absurd," said Omaha state Sen. Ernie Chambers.
Currently, all students through sixth grade recite the pledge of allegiance, even though it is not required, and sing patriotic songs.

The Government Accounting Office has published a new report detailing problems with the government program which gives ceremonial rifles to veterans organizations for use in parades and funerals. They have provided over 300,000 rifles since the 1920's with this program. It seems that a few of the rifles turn up missing over time as organizations fade away.

A man with a rifle committed an act of vandalism by shooting the Alaska oil pipeline, causing a massive oil spill of 70,000 gallons of crude oil. Because of the leak, oil production on the North Slope has been virtually shut down.
The man has been arrested and charged with criminal mischief. The shooting apparently was a random act of vandalism by a suspect with long criminal history. |

Despite heightened security after terrorist attacks, a man was able to carry a loaded handgun into a federal building housing FBI offices and fatally shoot an officer at a security checkpoint, authorities say.
"There should be a central registry that would allow law enforcement agencies to check to see if people purchasing guns have a mental illness," Prosecutor Carl Marlinga said.
