For those of us who hunt for the table or shoot for pleasure or competition, guns are elemental necessities — no different than the ball to a game of football. Being familiar and comfortable with them, we have no reason to fear guns. And we forget that may not be the case for people who do not hunt or shoot.
Some may be surprised that injuries or deaths are virtually nonexistent in the shooting sports. Unintentional deaths by firearms account for roughly 0.6 percent (roughly 600) of all accidental deaths in the U.S. Motor vehicle accidents top the list with roughly 33,000 annually.
In the gun business we don't refer to firearms injuries or deaths as accidental; we refer to them as negligence.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., bragged Wednesday about his flunking grade from the National Rifle Association, and said he wears the pro-Second Amendment group's low marks as a badge of honor.
The NRA's official Twitter account noted Tuesday evening during the vice presidential debate that they had awarded Kaine an "F" rating for "his tenure at both the state and federal levels." |

The gun control group founded by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D., Ariz.) has outspent the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee to aid New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan’s campaign.
The group, Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS), was created with the goal of “engaging millions of people about ways to reduce gun violence and supporting lawmakers willing to take a stand for responsible policies,” according to its website. Its election records show that it has directed its fire against just one candidate at the federal level: Hassan’s opponent, freshman Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R.). |

Under the new policy, all firearms must be in the owner’s possession, either secured in a holster or stored in a residence or vehicle. The securing of firearms will be the individual’s responsibility, as the university will not provide gun storage.
To make sure staffer members are in compliance of the new law, faculty are not allowed to designate their offices as gun-free zones. Should a faculty member decide to carry, they are not permitted to store their firearm in their university-owned office. |

He saw the news while scrolling through his social media feed, and by 11:35 the same night he published a post about it to his campaign page. In doing so, Knudsen set into motion a legal maneuver that gun rights lobbyists expect will prove a quick kill shot to the trailblazing local regulation before it even takes effect.
The ordinance requires background checks for most gun sales and transfers inside Missoula city limits.
Knudsen, in his Sept. 26 Facebook post, pledged to request a formal legal opinion from Attorney General Tim Fox on whether the ordinance comports with Montana law, effectively giving the state's top elected Republican the chance to void Missoula's ordinance with a pen stroke. |

On Wednesday, 12 of the 16 Sheriffs in the state of Maine announced their opposition to the ballot measure.
We live in one of the safest states in the country and strongly believe no provisions in this legislation would reduce gun violence or crime in Maine. In fact, Question 3 is unenforceable, confusing, poorly written and threatens to make law-abiding gun owners into criminals for simply loaning a firearm to a friend. By and large, the people who commit crimes with firearms are not concerned with good citizenship, compliance with existing law and are repeat offenders. It’s the law-abiding citizens who comply with gun laws that are the most affected by arbitrary gun laws and will be most affected by Question 3. |

Whatever your opinion on guns, most of us would probably agree: there are certain places where we ought to be particularly careful, to ensure that, whether we allow guns or not, they do not inadvertently cause injury. Making the top of most our lists, probably, are places like nuclear facilities, laboratories with dangerous chemicals, airports, hospitals and other medical facilities, and places where mental health care is being administered. Likely somewhere near the top, too, are places like day cares, other places with particularly young people and, perhaps, places with large-capacity crowds, like stadiums. |

Three weeks ago Missouri became the fourth state this year to allow “permitless” concealed carry of firearms by its citizens, its legislators voting to override Democrat Governor Jay Nixon’s veto of the bill. Missouri joins West Virginia, Mississippi, and Idaho in allowing its citizens this year to enjoy rights enshrined in the Second Amendment to the Constitution, bringing the total of such states to 12. |

We are excited about filing the HQL suit. As previously reported, this suit directly challenges the Handgun Qualification License requirements imposed by Maryland law, both as set forth in the statute, and as implemented by the Maryland State Police.
Those requirements violate the Second Amendment of the Constitution by placing unjustifiable and overwhelming burdens on the right of law-abiding citizens to purchase a handgun for the home. In good conscience, we cannot allow the HQL requirements to go unchallenged.

John Lott is an economist, political commentator and gun rights advocate. He is also a founder and president of the Crime Prevention Research Center. John has a new book out, The War on Guns: Arming Yourself Against Gun Control Lies, which reveals some fascinating facts that we're going to talk about. The first is that the book explains how the current background check system discriminates against law-abiding blacks and Hispanics, preventing them from being able to own guns. The second is that increased gun ownership by civilians lowers the rate of police officer deaths. The third is that it explains how gun-free zones actually attract criminals and mass public shooters. John, welcome to Financial Myth Busting. |

Donald Trump Jr. campaigned for his father, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, in Wisconsin Wednesday, with stops in Brookfield and the Wausau area.
At the Wausau-area event he stressed the importance of the Second Amendment to an enthusiastic crowd of about 150 supporters at an indoor shooting range.
He pushed a message that has helped get people elected in northern Wisconsin for decades: gun rights.
"We also defend the Second Amendment, so that everyone in this room, so that my wife, and your wives and your children can take care of themselves when someone much stronger, much meaner and much more vicious than them tries to break into their home," he said. "We've got to protect these issues." |

An East Carolina University professor who told local TV stations she was bringing a gun on campus in response to Saturday’s protests by some members of the marching band did not follow through on the statement.
Tracy Tuten, a marketing professor at the university, told reporters Tuesday that if the First Amendment allowed 19 members of the Marching Pirates to ignore band rules and take a knee during the national anthem then the Second Amendment allows her to ignore a ban against handguns on campuses. |

In a new round of grades from the nation's leading gun-rights group, Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey barely passed.
The National Rifle Association gave Toomey, who is facing a tough re-election battle, a "C" in its grades for this year's candidates. That's a downgrade from Toomey's 2010 Senate bid, when he drew an "A" grade and the powerful group's endorsement.
The NRA does not specify which votes or public statements it uses in its ratings, but it opposed Toomey's most well-known action on gun policy: the gun background-check bill he crafted with U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. |

A potential bombshell report published by Politico Tuesday suggests that the Obama administration is dropping a case against an American arms dealer, noting that, “The deal averts a trial that threatened to cast additional scrutiny on Hillary Clinton’s private emails as Secretary of State, and to expose reported Central Intelligence Agency attempts to arm rebels fighting Libyan leader Moammar Qadhafi.” |
