... "Understandably, the government is portraying this as 'an unacceptable blemish on the integrity of law enforcement in Liberty County.' Perhaps. But what is also unacceptable is the systemic lack of controls and accountability that would lead anyone to think they could get away with such a scheme--repeatedly and over the course of years." ...

"The headline says it all about the disconnect some people in the press have about gun rights: 'Is struggle for gun rights like the one for civil rights?'"

"Note to headline writer: Hey, bonehead, the right to keep and bear arms is a civil right. Same as the rights of free speech, freedom of religion, the free press (you are familiar with that one, correct?). Does the Bill of rights ring a bell with you? The Second Amendment is right in there with the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth and so forth right up to the Tenth Amendment. Your headline makes it seem like gun rights are somehow different from other rights, and they are not. ..." ...

"Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for a case to determine whether or not the disgusting vitriol spewed by the Westboro Baptist 'Church' is Constitutionally protected free speech. ..." ...

"But how is all this relevant to gun rights?"

"We gun rights advocates have tended, understandably, to focus on the finding in the Supreme Court's Heller ruling (and now in the McDonald ruling) that the right to keep and bear arms is indeed a right of the individual, protected by the Constitution."

"The forcible citizen disarmament lobby, on the other hand, prefers to focus on Justice Scalia's qualifying statement:" ...

"Recently the American Bar Association published a report urging:"

"... laws requiring that all newly-manufactured semi-automatic pistols be fitted with microstamping technology which would ... enable law enforcement to identify ... the first known purchaser of a weapon used in a crime."

"To succeed, microstamping requires building a permanent database of all gun owners (licensing) and linking their firearms by serial number (registration), two major goals of gun control advocates."

"Two law firms represent patent holders that could make the ABA recommendation reality. They’ve spent $6.7 million on campaign contributions since 2004, while the entire gun rights lobby spent $6 million." ...

... "At the 2008 Gun Rights Policy Conference, I spoke of three generations of broken homes being the enemy of liberty in America. I myself had been a cultural observer for four decades combining formal psychology training with work experience in full-time EMS. It's the kind of psychoanalysis which is a popular tool which a lot of professionals utilize, from marketers to litigators to jury selection to novel writers. Even body language experts. The Greeks had it right and Shakespeare got it right long before Freud even formulated his theories. Modern professionals have to have a grasp of the psychodynamics at work before they can earn a living at this, much less be correct and helpful in the administration of justice." ...

"Steve Goode is the fourth man in the hotel who offers to take me to a gun range. At 63, the mostly deaf [NRA] instructor wears high-powered digital hearing aides[sic] ... Like the other white, male boomers crammed into a Hyatt ballroom one recent weekend, Goode registered for the two-day-long [Gun Rights Policy Conference] ... because he's riled by handgun regulations cropping up in states across the US—especially in Illinois, where he lives. The waiting periods to get a gun permit, the training, the registration, the background checks, the restrictions on where, how, and which firearm and ammo he can use—all these not only threaten his hobby but his ability to defend himself, he says ..." ...

The NRA's sin: endorsing three conservative Democrats for Congress – Larry Kissell, Heath Shuler and Mike McIntyre."

"The post approvingly quotes a recent article from The American Spectator in which the author said the following:"
"What irks these conservatives is the sense that the mighty NRA — a 4 million-member, $307 million organization — has become too pragmatic in the use of its power: too willing to compromise ..." ...

"Perhaps it was the easiest letter ever presented to two Alaska senators, but it was still worth signing. Sens. Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski joined 14 of their colleagues Wednesday in a protest of the Obama administration’s decision to block the importation of some old Army rifles from South Korea."

"Actually, the importation was approved last year, but the State Department reversed course."

its National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figures for September 2010. NSSF-adjusted figures (770,310) show a 6 percent increase over September of last year (726,572).

The adjusted NICS data were derived by NSSF by subtracting out NICS purpose-code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases.

Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide a more accurate picture of current market conditions.

...In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions of firearms sales and transfers on new and used handguns and long guns.
