... "When we think of peace, what is it we think of? This American believes that peace is self-induced will to get along and live with others, that it cannot be forced at the end of a cannon, rifle, missile, smart bombs, EMP weaponry, bio and chemical weaponry, and covert/overt actions taken to murder leaders or opponents to various governments. This man keeps thinking of the Golden Rule - to do unto others, as you would have them do unto you." ... |

"Jury selection began on Monday in Pam Grunow's legal face-off with the South Florida company that distributed the semiautomatic handgun teenager Nathaniel Brazill used to kill her husband."
"The widow's attorneys say the civil case against Sunrise-based Valor Corp. is simple: The lightweight .25-caliber Raven Arms handgun is a defective product. The 'Saturday Night Special' is unreasonably dangerous, easy to hide, looks like a toy and is the weapon of choice for many criminals, they argue."
[If those are the best 'arguments' these people have, they don't have a prayer.]
"We have no hidden agenda--we want this gun off the market," said Bob Montgomery, one of Grunow's attorneys. "We want to get a verdict that will be a clarion call." |

FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- "A Cape Girardeau man, previously convicted of felonies, pleaded guilty Monday to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition in federal court."
"Michael J. Farrow, 43, appeared Monday before U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel."
"Cape Girardeau police responded to his home on Jan. 27, where his wife, Ann S. Farrow, told them her husband kept a shotgun in the home and had cleaned it several times."
"Farrow had earlier been convicted of felony stealing and sale of an imitation controlled substance. He now faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing was set for Jan. 6, 2003." ------- Considering the fact that rights restoration is exceedingly difficult and that he was never convicted of a violent crime in the first place, does a trip to prison at the public's expense really make sense here? |

... "A recent study conducted by Arif Khan, medical director of the Northwest Clinical Research Center in Bellevue, Wash., and adjunct professor of psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine, has revealed startling numbers of suicides committed and suicides attempted in the clinical trials for the new SSRI (serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors) antidepressants — numbers that for years had been hidden from both prescribing physicians and the public."
"Kahn has examined the official clinical drug-trial data for all SSRIs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 1985 and 2000, in which 71,604 participants in the clinical trials were treated with antipsychotics, all SSRIs and anticonvulsants. The rate of suicides in the general public is 11 in 100,000, which means an incidence rate for those participating in the SSRI clinical trials of nearly 68 percent — that's 718 suicides for every 100,000. Kahn's research further revealed that nearly 4 percent of SSRI drug-trial participants attempted suicide within the following year." ... |

"Despite alarming evidence of an escalation in anti-American attacks from Islamic terrorist groups like al-Qaida, Freeh in 1999 told Congress that domestic 'right-wing groups' posed 'a very real threat' to national security."
" "While the United States holds little credible intelligence at this time indicating that international or domestic terrorists are planning to attack United States interests domestically through the use of weapons of mass destruction, a growing number (while still small) of 'lone offender' and extremist splinter elements of right-wing groups have been identified as possessing or attempting to develop/use chemical, biological or radiological materials," Freeh said Feb. 4, 1999, in a prepared statement submitted to a subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Appropriations." ... |

Gun-related quotes from the debate are below. Click above link for full transcript. ------- "DAVIS: Mr. Simon, as you know, I served in the Vietnam War and I learned a little something about assault weapons, but I also know they have no place in a civilized society. So when I became governor, I signed gun safety legislation banning assault weapons, requiring trigger locks, to protect children, on weapons. You opposed my gun safety legislation, and for that you’ve been endorsed by the National Rifle Association, the Gun Owners of California and other gun groups. Just recently you received $50,000 contribution from the Firearms Freedom Fund."
"DAVIS: You told the L.A. Times over the weekend you couldn’t think of a single area in which you disagreed with the NRA. Now that you’ve had a couple of days to think about it, would you please tell us all the areas that you disagree with the NRA or the gun lobby?"
"SIMON: I’d be happy to do it, Mr. Davis. You know, first of all, you mischaracterized, you know, my positions, you know, with respect to stances I’ve taken. You know, I was not in favor of assault weapons, they have no place on our street."
"QUESTION: Mr. Simon, I want to go back to the question that Governor Davis asked you, and you never got a chance to answer it. Would you help the National Rifle Association try to repeal any gun control laws?"
"You specifically said you would have signed the assault weapon ban, but how about the bill regulating Saturday night specials, the one-per-month limit on handgun purchases, the bill requiring handgun buyers to pass a safety exam and be licensed? Would you have signed those bills?"
"SIMON: I would not have signed the Saturday night special law because I think it was broad on its face. But now, it’ll be tested in the courts."
"The bottom line is this: I will not seek to overturn these laws. I’m going to let them go through the natural, judicial process, because they are being challenged."
"And I’ve said publicly, and I’ll repeat it once again: I’m not in favor of any new gun laws, but when I take an oath as governor, I take an oath to enforce the law. I don’t choose. I don’t pick and choose which laws to enforce." |

USA Today gets in on the "Registration will prevent crime" kick. ------- "Who fired the weapon, however, remains a mystery, one that might be solved if the markings on the bullets could also be used to identify the gun's owner. Yet the creation of a national databank containing that critical information is being blocked by the fierce lobbying of the National Rifle Association (NRA)."
"The idea is simple: Every new gun sold in the country would be test-fired so that its unique markings could be entered into a national database. If the gun were ever used to commit a crime, the police could quickly match bullet to gun and, quite possibly, to the current owner. The Congressional Research Service, which conducts studies for members of Congress, recently concluded that the system would help authorities trace guns used in crimes." ...
"Police can track cars used in crimes to owners through mandatory auto licenses and registration. Collecting less information on guns used in crimes makes no sense." |

FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - "A former San Angelo doctor who challenged a federal law in a Second Amendment case was convicted Monday of firearm possession charges."
"A federal jury convicted Timothy Emerson of three counts of possessing a firearm. He was charged in 1998 after buying a pistol while under a restraining order during a divorce proceeding."
"U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings originally dismissed the charge against Emerson, ruling that the federal statute used to charge Emerson violated his Second Amendment right to bear arms."
"But the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the judge's ruling in October 2001."
"The 5th Circuit ruled that an individual has a right to bear arms -- a victory for gun rights advocates -- but that the right could be restricted under some circumstances."
"The case went back to the district court after the Supreme Court in June said it would not hear the case and a similar gun-rights case."
"During testimony, defense attorney David Guinn said his client was not a felon for owning guns that were legal once his divorce was completed."
" 'You jurors are the only ones who stand between the government and whatever they want to do whenever they want,' he said in a story in Monday night's online edition of the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. 'And that's what these kinds of laws do. Everything that the government says isn't always best for us and isn't always what is right.' "
"A sentencing date was not announced. Emerson faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, prosecutors said."
KABA NOTE:
This judicial train wreck is a direct result of the Bush/Ashcroft Administration's insistence that the Supreme Court not hear U.S. v. Emerson. The case was perfectly valid, long overdue and indeed righteous, yet the "pro gun" Bush/Ashcroft administration screwed America for political gain, letting Dr. Emerson get fed to the lions. |

First, the quote:
"Calls to police hotlines have provided more than a thousand leads in the investigation [of the sniper shootings in Maryland, Virginia and D.C.]."
THINK ABOUT IT...
If we are being told the truth -- that only one person has committed these cowardly acts of senseless and needless slaughter -- that means there are at least 999 people being treated, in some way, as suspects in crimes they didn't commit.
And they are all being "turned in" by their neighbors -- many of them, probably, because they are gunowners.
Multiply that kind of "public involvement" a millionfold, and that is what President Bush's "TIPS" program could become. |

FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- NOTE: Not a word about him misusing the firearm -- he simply had it in his possession, and off to prison he went. ------- Ashley Walters, aka So Solid Crew's Asher D, has been released from Rugby Young Offenders institution, according to a spokesman.
To mark the occasion, Walters and the rest of the group have spoken openly to a TV documentary team about his experiences and the events that led up to his imprisonment.
Walters, from Peckham in south London, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a loaded gun, following a confrontation with a traffic warden.
It is an offence which carries a maximum 10 years in jail. He was sentenced last March to 18 months in a young offenders' institution.
Southwark Crown Court heard he and his girlfriend were in their parked Peugeot car next to an "expired meter" in July 2001 when they were told to pay or go.
The traffic warden was so worried about the argument that followed in Hanover Square, near the capital's busy Oxford Street, that he called the police.
When an armed response team stopped the pop star's vehicle shortly afterwards, the gun was found wrapped in a sock in his girlfriend's handbag.
The court heard the loaded firearm, a Brocock, which looks like a Magnum handgun, had been altered from its original airgun specification to fire "potentially lethal" ammunition. |
